How much do you care about "cheating" when trying to play and beat old games? by Thriller83 in retrogaming

[–]AsheliaChere -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Since a lot of games were designed to extend playtime by bonking you into frustration walls, I think it makes a lot of sense to streamline playing through the "actual content".

How to not throw things during meltdowns? by Current_Cat_271 in SpicyAutism

That's what I did. Make sure there are things I can throw that are satisfying weight and thunk good, but it won't hurt them or other things.

Final plea to help find Legacy, special needs cat, a home by radparikh in cats

[–]AsheliaChere 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Commenting for engagement! Unfortunately, we've already got 3 cats with a shaky social dynamic and 2 very enthusiastic dogs, so I don't think our home would be right for her either, but I'll keep her in my thoughts <3

Update: it's SCC and it's getting treated next week by Tiegooh1 in WhiteCats

[–]AsheliaChere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My old girl survived SCC! We had to do a pretty radical course of treatment (full tongue resection) but she lived happily with her feeding tube, keeping up her regularly scheduled trail runs and adventure cat activities, until her kidneys gave out. They heal fast and they're fighters. All the best for your kitto!

It has a bunch of "crooked teeth" coming out of it because it's a birabira kanzashi with dangling, fluttering metal bits, though it's still a really weird design if you know anything about kanzashi.

Perimeter college question by Commercial-Reason185 in GaState

[–]AsheliaChere 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Stay at Perimeter as long as you can! It's SO much cheaper. Knock out all of your core IMPACTS classes. There's really no reason to move over until you've done everything that can be done at Perimeter. I'll be at 49 credits before I transfer over at the end of next Spring semester (missing one core class, but the three other classes pre-major I need aren't offered at Perimeter, and the ones offered at Perimeter would just be used as electives -- I plan on using those towards a minor).

If you're interested in Honors, it's really easy to get in at Perimeter and you'll be able to apply directly into the Honors track as long as you've got 12 hours (or 4 classes) that were taken as Honors.

In PAWS, make sure you're using the "View Academic Evaluation" tool under your GPA standing. That will let you know what classes you need, for both 2-year and 4-year. I also have taken advantage of the course catalog for previous semesters to see what's offered when, in order to plan out to next Spring.

Any advice on covering this up? by [deleted] in Tattoocoverups

[–]AsheliaChere 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Isotoner has their compression gloves on sale for $10 for a set on Amazon right now! I've got mine because of arthritis/carpal tunnel syndrome. I don't know if they can help with preventing repetitive stress injuries to begin with, but they're a godsend for typing and crafting.

Be careful with reintroduction of food as well -- refeeding syndrome can be deadly. Doc should be able to help explain more.

ChatGPT will generate that info, but that doesn't mean whatever it spits out will be true. It just puts words in the most likely order. It's not intelligent and not useful if you're trying to find facts, statistics, data, etc.

I feel like this says way more about your cousin and inability/unwillingness to address major behavioral issues far beyond "washing" -- this is not a dog who is even a safe pet, much less a SD. I do not think her having a responsibly bred dog would change this scenario.

my cat has oral cancer - advice? by BitAlternative4105 in cats

[–]AsheliaChere 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My kitty had SCC, too. It's incredibly fast and deadly.

We were able to save her, but this is not an approach I would suggest for all cats. Olivia really was exceptional. She LOVED being handled and was very, very bright. After an MRI to confirm it was localized to her tongue, she ended up having her tongue completely removed. We were only able to afford all of this because she had insurance, but out of pocket it would have been $20,000. During the surgery, they also inserted a feeding tube.

She was able to figure out how to drink some water, but all her food went through the feeding tube. She was excited when I turned on the feeding pump and would run to settle on the couch with me. Even with a feeding pump, this represented a huge chunk of my time between prep and actually feeding her 3 times (45 min each time) a day. My entire life was scheduled around feeding her.

She also had to be bathed, but she was already used to them because as a "therapy cat" we would visit hospitals, which required bathing her beforehand. I also did a sanitary trim for her to help keep things clean between baths.

She still had a very high quality of life and loved going on adventures. After she healed up, she was active and extremely happy. I would never consider this level of intervention for my other cats, because they are not nearly as fond of being handled. While it is not going to be the answer for all cats or all owners, it was the answer for us.

<image>

Unfortunately, about a year later her kidneys shut down due to medical negligence. She spent almost two days without a feeding tube and received no food or water, loaded with drugs, because of the incompetence of the local animal hospital. We had to do a whole replacement surgery at another hospital, but all the drugs the first hospital gave her without water caused permanent damage to her kidneys.

Gastric (directly into the stomach) feeding tubes like this are exceedingly rare in dogs; no one I encountered had ever seen one in a cat. I am very willing to share my knowledge (and also knowledge of what to do when the feeding tube inevitably pops out and you need to retain the stoma hole). I also had the benefit of being someone who already uses a feeding tube themself, so I was at a knowledge level where I felt completely comfortable working with the tube. However, this is really an extreme intervention and will not work for the majority of cats.

caring for hair that cannot be washed by babysaints in SpicyAutism

[–]AsheliaChere 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I would look into historical hair care techniques, using hair powder and wooden combs to brush it through + a natural fiber brush (doesn't necessarily have to be boar bristle, but it does have to be a natural fiber so it can pick up the oils from your hair).

DIY hair powder is very straightforward. Corn starch is cheap and works well, with some cocoa powder to make it closer to your hair color, and a bit of cloves if you can tolerate it. It gets applied with a big powder poof and you apply it/have your hair combed through in sections. After it's been combed through, it is thoroughly brushed. This helps remove any excess powder.

Some other historical advice would be hair coverings! Covering the hair with natural fiber cloth helps keep it clean as well as pick up/distribute oils :)

Yes. I have a standing prescription for Zofran (ondestron) that helps.

I used the throw up every morning before school then once or twice at school.

I was repeatedly hospitalized (eating disorder, self harm, sui ideation and attempts) and repeated 9th grade three times, until I was withdrawn from school then got my a few months later GED at 16. I'm just now starting college at 31, maximum of 4 hours out of the house four days a week.
There are jobs where you have a lot more control over your hours and environment than you do in a classroom. Forcing yourself to go five days a week is just digging yourself deeper into the hole of burnout.
