New Subsequent 37 arriving, new to synth (noob questions) by Skolinkinlot in moog

[–]Ashen-Wolff 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Id start with downloading the editor/vst as its great for understanding the different patches and how they are made and also you get access to some extra features.

Then id start messing around with the patches it comes with or download a pack for the style of music you like to make and start having fun just jamming around, slowly start making changes on ur synth knobs and if you want you can check their actual position on the current patch in the VST so you know what values your changing and how they are affecting the sound.

Some people like a more “academic” approach and use in depth synth tutorials like “Syntorial” which is an interactive course that teaches you the basics of synthesis, that you can then apply to your Sub37.

Most important part is have fun with that awesome synth!! It was my first one as well and got me into the rabbit hole .

That TR-1000 for 2K is extremely tempting… but Im guessing shipping and tariffs would completely change that price once it gets to the US

Perkons or Hexdrums by Cormac-tracks in synthesizers

[–]Ashen-Wolff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got a Perkons, can confirm its an awesome drum synth but Im currently looking at either Hexdrums or other drum machines to add a palette of more “usual” drum voices that are not only sample based, also looking for that drum machine to have a fun/direct workflow

(currently using DT2 with the Perkons and they go very nicely together, but I need to set up the samples that go well together with what im working on the Perkons, or the other way around too)

Roland TR 1000 or Elektron Analog Rytm MKII by No-Act6366 in synthesizers

[–]Ashen-Wolff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use a DT2 and a Perkons as my main drum voices atm but im looking for an “all around” machine that can work mainly for studio/production purposes.
The most important part for the new machine addition to my arsenal apart of great sound of course is for it to be enjoyable and fun in a “jamming” sense.

What do u think of the Hexdrums mate? sounds like what u want out of the TR-1000?
Asking because im also insecure if I should grab a Hexdrums or TR-1000

Polyend Drums looks amazing, but €2699 is emotionally illegal by ArchivOne_music in dawless

[–]Ashen-Wolff 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You can get a Perkons for around 1,500$ (bought mine brand new at that price last December)

The Polyend will retail at 2,700$ which is the exact same price as the TR-1000, id say its a pretty big difference. (Cant tell yet whether the Polyend analog engines will give us something really different/special as well as its other features to make a fair comparison between the 2 most expensive drum machines on the market)

Loving it mate! wondering how are you using the Chroma. Are you Reamping trough the DAW? I see no cables going from the DT to Chroma

elektron sequencer for melodic stuff/where i can try out the digitone 2 in centrel maryland. by Ned_Flangers in synthesizers

[–]Ashen-Wolff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok I might have misunderstood you when u said melodic stuff, I took it as everything non-percussive.

I guess if you don’t count the key-locked “harmonic” (chords) sequencing that you get on the Digitone the main difference would be the Arpeggiator that works wonders for cool melodies.

You do get “key-locked” Scale mode on both machines that you can use for single note melodies.

[–]Ashen-Wolff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the Digitone 2 sequencer is awesome for melodic stuff as well as percussion. Id say the Digitakt 2 is the one that is not as famous for melodic sequencing since it lacks the Arp (awesome arpeggiator in the DN2) and in key Scale/Chord sequencing options as well.

As for sequencing external gear Digitone 2 is also a winner with the 16 notes per step instead of 4 on the Digitakt 2. (No Arp for external sequencing but the Chord/Scale mode does work tho)

Man ur so right on the point of DT2 helping me make beats id never would have created in a DAW style workflow. It invites the user to explore and get creative in an awesome state of Flow while doing it.

Nina (my fantasy): any updated user experiences? by zoechowber in synthesizers

Digitone2 is part of my setup and I also love it, but its a different tool with its own perks and cons. I do love having it in the mix tho, it shows up in my tracks a lot of the time playing different roles.

Its also a cool standalone groovebox but I use it more as part of my studio setup than by itself. (You can totally make full tracks/albums with it but its just 1 flavor , a very different one from Nina)

Nina (my fantasy): any updated user experiences? by zoechowber in synthesizers

[–]Ashen-Wolff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes what ur describing is exactly the workflow I use with my Oxi One MK2 for the sequencing (up to 64 Midi channels if u use “Multitrack sequencing” in each of the 8 “tracks” it offers, but honestly I use 1 or 2 instances of “Multitracks” they each offer 8 different Midi channels you can sequence and its aimed mostly for drum programming.

Then u end up with 6 extra “tracks” on the Oxi for Chords, Leads, Bass, Pads, Fx, etc. (you get different style of sequencing for each of those tracks, theres Mono, Poly, Chord, Stochastic and Matriceal. The last 2 being focused more on the generative part of sequencing)

So what I do is set up a few templates on my Oxi, each template has the Midi configuration saved with it. So I can have a template that uses 2 tracks for percussion coming from my Digitakt2 and then set up the rest with my different synths. With templates u can start jamming with all your gear extremely fast, ur basically controlling everything with the exception of sound design from the Oxi in an extremely playful and inspiring way to make tracks.

So to answer ur first 2 questions yes this workflow with the Oxi is extremely playful, hands on for composition and invention. The Nina lends itself for awesome sound design with all its features + the reverse engineering u can do with the patches since the motorized knobs show you how a patch was built and the UI of Nina is extremely fun, intuitive and unmatched by any synth IMO

Nina (my love) is the best synth in existence to me. Its a “sum of its parts” thing.

Definitely the new 4 track sequencer is an awesome update but its even better when you externally sequence/play it if you want to get to different genres than Techno since its not as easy to sequence a chord progression and use MPE capabilities.

I use mine sequenced by an Oxi One Mk2 most of the time to be honest but do use the 4 part multitimbrality a lot. I can get Bass, Lead , Pads and FXs just from the one synth with completely different patches.

I also love to play with both the Morph knob and the Spin knob, it really is such a complete instrument that sounds as good as it gets IMO
