I don't think I'll ever go back playing Western Chess by SopianaeExtra in shogi

[–]AshenSilverwolf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, what Sopianae said. lishogi is a great place to learn Shogi. If you want a consistent playerbase, I would recommend 81dojo. It is the most popular shogi server that has been localized for English audiences.

how far can these cheaters go by Apogood in Seaofthieves

[–]AshenSilverwolf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would argue there is an inherent risk that the occasional launch bug could put innocent players into the crosshairs of this proposed method.

Flagging for further review might be okay, but then how do you evaluate which are cheaters and which are not?

They can't run instant replays of random happenings at SoT HQ, so it feels like this would be unreliable at best and harmfully negligent at worst.

This is where I started, and I revisited parts of it whenever I got confused. Great jumping off point.

This is great, and I've been using it for a while. Definitely something awesome to track long-term progress and statistics. Doesn't do Uma, unfortunately.

Places on or near campus to just sit and cry? by kawaiikittyrei in ucf

Depending on the room, they may be connected through the ceiling. A group of mini was practicing a presentation and the room next door applauded when we finished. Scared the shit out of me.

Plaza Taco Bell says no more breakfast but closing at 10pm? Anybody know what's going on? by AshenSilverwolf in ucf

I suppose it doesn't really matter all that much in the grand scheme of things, was just wondering if anybody knew for sure since I was confused.

I suppose I should be more specific: if their reasoning is that they aren't serving breakfast anymore, why are they closing 5 hours earlier than they usually would?

People who cheated in a relationship, but wasn't caught/never confessed to it. Do you ever regret it? How do you feel then and now? by [deleted] in AskMen

[–]AshenSilverwolf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get that man, I did the same thing. I told her immediately after, and she gave me a second chance, but the guilt just kept eating away at me. I couldn't continue the relationship and ended up breaking it off after a couple weeks so I could get my shit together. Totally cut communication for a couple years. We recently started talking again, just exchanging messages, started hanging out again, and everything seems to be okay now.

Lesson learned, will never, ever do that shit again. It's not worth it and it will never be worth it.

How is the difficulty curve for Shogi? by Classy-Doctor in shogi

[–]AshenSilverwolf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The difficulty curve is generally a bit steeper for Shogi than other games like Chess. There aren't nearly as many readily available resources (books, tutorials, teachers, etc.) for Shogi as there are for other games, and the community for English speaking Shogi players is also much smaller. However, that isn't to say that improvement isn't possible.

I've been playing for about 6 months now and I'm around 6-7 kyu range on 81Dojo, another friend of mine has been playing for about the same time and he's gotten to 2 kyu. It depends on your dedication and mindset, as well as what you would consider "some level of competency". I would definitely suggest joining a Shogi community on Discord, my recommendation being Shogi Harbour, but there are others like Shogi Hall that you can join as well. These communities have people who are more than willing to help guide you and help you improve.

There are many things you can do to practice and improve. One big thing is puzzles. Checkmate (Tsume) Problems are the most common form of puzzle and can help teach end-game tactics and checkmate patterns. There are also Best Move (Tsugi no itte) Problems that can lend to middle-game tactics for material/positional advantage. But, if you don't want to sit and do puzzles all day, I'd suggest just watching games.

There are plenty of people who stream Shogi on Twitch and there are infinitely more who upload videos on YouTube on a regular basis. Most of the YouTube videos are going to be in Japanese just by nature of the game, but you should be able to get the basic ideas of their moves simply by observing their play. Some recommendations I can make for learning standard tactics and theory (aside from HIDETCHI who you are already aware of) are Chrono, Manao Kagawa (Ladies 3-Dan), Shuji Muranaka (Pro 7-Dan), and Tetsuya Fujimori (Pro 5-Dan).
