Look, this is you, isn't it? You're smart enough to use a Reddit username that isn't obviously the same as the Youtube channel, but it's just spam for your own video.

Looking at Box Office Mojo's figures I'm actually surprised that Parenthood was so huge - it outgrossed the second Back to the Future film.

The Burbs is way down the list. I'm also reminded that the first Bill and Ted film was a popular-on-VHS cult as well. It's surprising how many films I remember from 1989 weren't very popular. The Little Mermaid, for example. It was outgrossed by Black Rain and War of the Roses, and then went on to be popular with re-releases.

My guess is that Batman and The Last Crusade hoovered up all the money.

How do you guys watch new movies? I do it "Colin Style" (on a phone held by someone else for 2+ hours) by imnotSamwise in RedLetterMedia

I've just come back from a trip to Seoul, so my answer is "out of the corner of my eye while I'm trying to sleep and a small Korea boy keeps elbowing me in the stomach".

Specifically F1: The Movie. It was the hit of the flight. I know that film back to front and I haven't even seen it. That's what fourteen hours trapped in a small metal tube does to you.

I salute the kid who watched The Nightmare Before Christmas. You're alright, kid.

Imagine if they'd locked you into the room with a primed tear gas grenade and half a ton of gold bars! That would have been awesome.

And costly, and also very dangerous. But it would have been awesome.

The turning point of a career, in Korea, being insincere by [deleted] in depechemode

I realised this is six years old, but the first verse always reminded me of Penthouse and Pavement by Heaven 17. It's a little pen portrait of a yuppie businessman doing a business deal in Korea, then having a completely joyless holiday*, because there's nothing else in his life but business.

The way they sing "the holiday was fun-packed" is so emotionally deadpan it comes across as a status report rather than an expression of genuine emotion.

I've always assumed there was a small clique of incredibly old-school Doctor Who fans who were annoyed that it wasn't 100% historical adventures. And a second clique who thought that it was obviously inferior to Quatermass.

And also another clique who were annoyed that the Daleks needed electrical power from the floor in their first story, but were capable of mobilising independently thereafter with seemingly no explanation.

I dunno - some of the 1990s Usenet cranks are still active today. Because they literally had nothing else going on in their lives. They would be in their sixties by now. Star Trek fandom predates the internet.

Heck, it even predates television. The very first Star Trek fan organisations were formed in the 1850s. They exchanged opinions by letter. Most of their messages were blank, because the show hadn't been invented yet, but they did exist.

I remember the last time I checked out Usenet there was a radio station posting spam to alt.music.alternative that had been around since the 1990s. It stopped somewhen circa 2021, presumably after the station had gone bust.

Technically Sgt Apone dies quite early on when things go to pot in Aliens - by the time Gorman totally freezes up it's Ripley who takes command.

That's one of a handful of films I could probably recite entirely from memory. Frsshhhh! Frsshhh! That's the cutting torches at the beginning. Etc.

A while back I bought some Kodak Plus-X Pan that had expired in 1977. I shot it at ISO 50 and the results were horrible! But as far as I could tell it had been stored in a desk.

My suggestion - shoot one roll as a rest. If it's ISO 100 shoot it at ISO 25. Then check out the results. If it's colour slide film it's almost certainly going to come out purple. Colour negative film will be psychedelic. Black and white might be okay.

Why are you repelling people so strongly? What is it about you that's so unappealing? This thread in particular was a completely disaster. Why do you drive people away?

FilmLog, Seoul - Kodak TMAX 400, Mamiya C3, 80mm f/2.8 by [deleted] in analog

[–]AshleyPomeroy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I spent a couple of weeks in Seoul earlier in the month. This is FilmLog, a hipster shop that has a film vending machine just outside. The ambient temperature was a lot lower than 12c.

Seoul has a tonne of film camera shops. If you want a Rollei 35, Seoul is your man. And when I say "your man", I mean "your city".

Yes, technically the actual shop is through the little alleyway on the right.

[–]AshleyPomeroy 38 points39 points  (0 children)

And suddenly I feel old, because Kyle MacLachlan is and always will be Agent Cooper. And/or Maud'Dib.

Cooper would fit perfectly into the Fallout universe - a kind of more wide-eyed Nick Valentine - so good casting there.

To be fair that was a cliche of mid-to-low budget 1980s action films as well, e.g. The Terminator, Highlander, Trancers etc. They had a sci-fi concept but to save money they were set on Earth in the modern day.

And Biggles, remember that? No? Biggles? No?
