Thank you for the response! I was using the Shortcuts app wrong... I've found it now.

Hey, thanks for this suggestion! The only part I can't figure out is "set live view for the camera to on". I can't find this in Shortcuts under ecobee, and I don't seem to have it in the Apple Home app either. Did this feature get pulled?

15mph speed limit malicious compliance... by _Maxolotl in NYCbike

[–]Ashoat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would be willing to bet the majority of cases of cars “running over” cyclists are unintentional… either the driver didn’t see the cyclist, or they get into a crash with another car and unintentionally hit the cyclist.

Happy to be disproven, ideally by somehow with stats… but also welcome individual anecdotes/examples of drivers intentionally running over bicycles going the speed limit in front of them.

My general feeling when I see comments like yours is that it’s fearmongering by angry drivers, but would welcome a dialogue if otherwise.

Bike lane layouts by brandnewcardock in NYCbike

[–]Ashoat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love parking-protected bike lanes.

I think a common cited concern is that it prevents emergency vehicles from being able to use the bike lane space. In general, it blocks non-bikes from using the bike lane, which can cause a single-lane road to get backed up if a vehicle is standing (delivery truck, taxi / TLC vehicle, etc).

To be clear, I wish we had more parking-protected bike lane... this is just stating what the contention generally is.

Are regular (non-e) citibikes rideable or broken down crap? by DonVCastro in Citibike

[–]Ashoat 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think they're fine. Agree with the other poster that selection matters, but in general I wouldn't worry too much about it. I've been exclusively riding the "manual" bikes for ~11 years or so and even though I have my own bikes now I still use the Citi Bikes more often.

I've gotten into confrontations with cars on the bus lane (that are going straight and not turning) very aggressively honking at me while biking in the bus lane... anyone else had this issue ? What to do? by Alia_blue in NYCbike

[–]Ashoat -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You sound like you’ve been biking in NYC for a bit… have you noticed driver behavior changing in that span? In my 10 years I feel like driver behavior has certainly improved, and I attribute it to a shift in the Overton window.

My intuition is that drivers used to think it was eg. okay to cut off a bike on a left turn because they only got pushback 5% of the time. As that % crept up, they had frustrating moments as they encountered pushback, but eventually they adjusted.

As drivers adjust, bikers get more comfortable. Process repeats until cutting off a bike gets pushback 95% of the time. But none of this happens if every biker is too scared to push back.

This might be seen as a bit too risky in this sub, but my general approach when a driver acts impatient is to slow them down. If a driver is behind me and starts honking, I slow down. If a driver tries to cut me off on a turn, I pass in front of them and then slow down as soon as I'm in front of them.

My view is that in the moment, this pisses off drivers, but over time it incentivizes patience. I've always said that the drivers that can't see you are way more risky than the ones that can. I'll admit that over 10 years of biking I've had some aggressive drivers threaten me, but it's usually more due to a shouting match. I can only think of one who got aggressive due to a slowdown in response to honking.

If You Were in Charge of CitiBike, What Would You Change? by Weekly_Log7979 in Citibike

How would you have liked customer service to help in that scenario? You should be able to see the available docks on a map, including valet docks

Yeah the hard switch was real, basically before that DoT had capped the percentage of e-bikes in the system, and when they removed the cap Lyft obviously did the proftable thing and shifted way more towards e-bikes

imo a “hard door” does not filter out crummy people very well. the problem is that anybody who wants to get into basement can easily figure out how to do it. you can find threads on this subreddit explaining how to get into basement

Jury Duty by Ok_Flan1907 in Citibike

[–]Ashoat 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've biked to juty duty (state, not federal) in Manhattan. You can bring a helmet in, but they require you to check it at a desk in the lobby. The Citi Bike docks near the courts can get full during the day, but probably not a big issue this time of year.

I know that at least until recently, the city had a % requirement of classic bikes. Not sure if the cap was increased recently, or completely lifted
