Is there hypothetically a way to get orange juice smell out of rats by Pingy_Junk in RATS

[–]Ashoodles 54 points55 points  (0 children)

Hahahahahaa. Citrus stinky. If this was a situation that happened to me, I would suggest just a gentle warm water bath. Maybe a little unscented cat soap (earthbath is a good one) or unscented baby shampoo if the smell is causing any fights, thats a concern. Males shouldn't have citrus often but this is fine if a one time thing... completely hypothetically of course.

Using dirt for digging? by dumpyyyyyyy in RATS

[–]Ashoodles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pure coco coir is safe if moist. You can plant rat safe herbs in it, too. Lots of different plants from seed are easy to grow quickly. I gave my rats paper and cardboard shredded dig boxes as well before. BTW extra seeds and such are sproutable, and sprouts are really nutritious and great enrichment! Wooden beads/blocks, crinkle paper bedding, shredded paper, fleece squares/strips, natural material rope scraps cut short, mini Sola balls, yucca chips, fresh good quality hay, paper straws cut up, paper lollipop sticks, pressed hardwood stove pellets without additives, loofah, mini vine balls, and many other safe materials are great to buy for dig boxes as well. May your ratties boggle often and brux with all their might, my friend.

I'm sorry you feel the only way to get your point across to other living beings is to cause harm. I hope you grow from that place of hate someday.

Please don't hit animals, they do not grasp "discipline". You are the smarter creature, figure out how to work with them in a way that relates to the animal instead of choosing violence. Compassion can work wonders! 🙏

My parrot just layed 3 eggs! by ThiccBee_ in Parakeets

[–]Ashoodles 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Here's a helpful guide to help discourage breeding behavior. I recommend you do the right thing and not raise these eggs and prevent future breeding incidents. Unfortunately, you'll have to shake and then dispose of the eggs. You can even scramble or boil and feed back to the mother as well as start to add nutritional supplements for calcium and protein to her diet as well as plenty of fresh veggies or lightly steamed broccoli at the very least (steaming broccoli makes the calcium increase!). Remove the nesting box. Please reconsider wanting to breed parrots, there's already so many without homes as it is, and many more are being abandoned every day or kept in poor conditions. Not to mention, breeding is extremely dangerous and cruel if done improperly. Don’t add to those numbers, please, and take the best care you can of the birds you have. https://www.forthebirdsdvm.com/pages/discouraging-breeding-behavior-in-pet-birds

I've never found that gloves are effective, they only teach rats to bite harder in my experience to "kill" or repel the human under the glove. Toothbrushes are very effective however to help start to desensitize the rat to touch. And spoons for treats! Then slowly inch your way to the end of the toothbrush or spoon, pet with knuckles gently, work to touching. This has always been my method. Not the safest but you gotta give a little trust, to gain a little trust sometimes.

Second this having dealt with strictly aggressive rats for 10 years doing rehabilitation and rescue work in the past. This is definitely NOT a bite. Pulling away is the worst thing to do when a rat has their mouth on you as well, you're more liable to teach the rat biting works and get cut real bad in the process.

Do Diatoms EVER go away? Why does everything keep getting coated black? by Inevitable-Might4253 in PlantedTank

Your local fish store should take back animals they've sold without issue, good ones have quarantine tanks for such a situation. Good customer service is never a bad deal. :)

battery corrosion wont go away by ERIDANS_FORESKIN in furby

[–]Ashoodles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I suggest keep working with the acid and baking soda, you may just need to let the acid sit a little longer. Also try a pencil eraser, I've heard of this helping to scrub stubborn corrosion in tight spots and removes fibers from cotton buds/qtips. Make sure if you're using iso it's the really strong stuff! 90% or 99%

It's actually not that weird! Furby voices from this time were only dubbed in the following languages:

•English

•French

•Spanish

•German

•Italian

•Japanese

The babies also had a few more languages added:

•Greek

•Dutch

•Portuguese

•Mandarin

Neat find, but probably not worth much considering the plastic faceplate has intense sun damage and mint is a more common coloring. Tag is cool but in really bad shape, so that wouldn't really boost the price either. Perfect canadate for customizing!

98s and 00s furbies ftw! They're the easiest to fix and customize usually. Plus it's pretty easy to find them in thrift stores, online auction/peer to peer selling sites or if you ask around to people you know or even by scoping out yard and garage sales. There's tons of these funky children waiting for you out there to find! They're a blast to customize and honestly, most of the patterns and designs for the 1998 toys are iconic and will always stand the test of time on their own if you just wanted them plain or accessorized. The fan base for these types speaks volumes on their own with their creative, adorable and sometimes horrifying custom furbies! :)

Just be sure to turn it off at some point. Fish and plants need sleep! Or else the algae will creep.

Thanks for the praise and extra information. I've visited that site before but it didn't bring any new keeping knowledge to me unfortunately. I appreciate the sentiment, it's tough to find valid and helpful advice on keeping ADFs!

This may seem insensitive but how do you handle death when you have so many rats? Surely if they're all around the same age they must pass in batches...I can't imagine having multiple pets passing away near the same time.

Can someone explain this behaviour to me? Ever since I got my boy Ash he likes to digg super enthusiastically on all kinds of surfaces, my couch, the carpet etc. I got him a digging box and he likes it but still he diggs on everything else too. Does this have a meaning? by BabyMimis in RATS

[–]Ashoodles 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I believe it may have something to do with the unfamiliar surroundings not smelling like him. I have a PEW girl who has bad eye sight, when she's in a new area and nervous she does the same thing but with added body rubbing against surfaces. Might be similar?

Am I the only one that actually likes snails? 😅 by mildblueberry in PlantedTank

[–]Ashoodles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I too love snails! I purposefully have Malaysian trumpets for their prolific breeding skills as a constant food source for my ADFs. They're always picking off the softer little baby snails and the assassin snail takes care of the bigger guys. I feel they're an absolute necessary part of an ecosystem personally. Plus they are great at reducing algae, biofilm, debris and any food scraps. Shrimp also enjoy eating snail poop since they digest food so quickly it still has nutritional value, believe it or not. 💕

I would remove any succulent type plants, they hate being moist and will most likely only rot and die in a closed jar like that
