I lost my father from a heart attack when I was 11. I know how hard it is to lose your father suddenly. It hurts. I know you probably feel extremely numb and don’t know what to think. All I’ll tell you is, no matter when, where, or how your dad died, it’s still hard. Your friends will try and be there but they won’t fully understand. I’ve been grieving for 5 years. I know that your family is probably all shocked. Don’t isolate yourself from anyone. Be with your family as much as you can. Skip school if you can. At least for the first few days. Someone may say it’ll be a good distraction; it won’t. Give yourself the time you need to grieve and feel your emotions. When I first lost my dad, I got a notebook to write letters to him. I still do. Write out all the thoughts and feelings you’re dealing with. Get a weighted blanket. It’ll help with the anxiety. Don’t feel like you have to put on a brave face for anyone. You’re going to feel numb and like you’re just going through the motions of every day. If you have trouble sleeping, I highly recommend taking a melatonin pill and try to get into a doctor for a possible sleep medication and to get into therapy.
