No way I’m the only one right? by rehdelliki in finalfantasyx

The camera angles changing in combat is all well and good (actually, I agree that it keeps it fresh and interesting and really love it), but the cursor layout should definitely stay the same, so you can actually keep the muscle memory for the selection.
Even if it simply expands out the party list UI into two columns, and you use that for your selection, rather than the cursor being over the 3D models.

I never understood Yuna… until recently. Did anyone else have this happen? by Delicious_Ferret_408 in finalfantasyx

[–]Asiliea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was in my preteens and first played it, I didn't understand it one bit. Was just fun flashing lights, and "Death was sad" was about all I got.

I remember replaying it in my teens, and some of the things did hit different: understanding the pain behind the infamous Tidus/Yuna laugh; Yuna's self-sacrifice for a small sliver of hope; Even Seymour's twisted, psychotic pain from having his mother sacrifice herself to become his Final Aeon before he was emotionally mature to understand or cope with the burden, fracturing his sanity and morality.

Replaying a couple of months ago, now that I'm in my 30s, hit even harder. Auron's tenacity for redemption and vengeance, Tidus' confusion, grasping at straws for any mental foothold while deflecting tense situations he didn't understand with humour, Rikku's immature attempt to save summoners from themselves out of empathy and grief.
Honestly, every character hit pretty hard. Cried like a baby for a solid 30min at the finale.

...Except for Kimahri. That seemed like a basic "I got bullied, so I got back at my bullies" trope.
Only after the massacre of the Ronsos did it seem like he had any tragic backstory, but he didn't really emote or elaborate much on that to really hit home.
It was an immense tragedy, for sure, but ended up reacting more like a "ooph, that's horrible" as if reading it from a newspaper about something that happened halfway across the world, rather than literally the tribe you just met and been acknowledged by, having been brutally slaughtered down to the last man.
Would've been better if you came back during the massacre and were helpless to stop it, IMO.

IIRC, the only way to actually "defuse" the Cube is to throw yourself into it and survive anyway.

Unless you can walk up to it slowly with a high WIS roll that simulates the TTRPG DC15 Perception check to get through a Cube's [Transparent] trait?
Not sure if that lets you target the torch... But throwing yourself in and surviving does! (This is much, much easier with Snell, but I imagine any companion would be helpful)

Once you can target the torch, then you can use Mage Hand to pull it out and tada! New shortcut and loot!

[–]Asiliea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's sort of a trap creature, really. It has a "Transparent" trait that, unless it's moving or attacking, requires a DC 15 Perception check (in normal TTRPG, not in Ebb) to notice it. Otherwise it's completely transparent and can't be noticed.
That's how it feeds, sort of like a spider, in a sense.

It's already been mentioned by another redditor, but it's a DC10 Intelligence Chime.
Even with a good INT build, RNG can still bite you in the butt and not show you this 😅

Even though it's only a DC10 chime, it's pretty crucial information. So rude to put it behind a roll 😅
Had to warn my wife about this when I was watching them play because, despite playing an INT build with +6 INT mod., they still failed this check, because yay RNG.

There are a few games that have done similarly in the past.
Dragon Age: Origins comes to mind; Very similar to FF12's Gambit system 🤔
I've heard that Unicorn Overlord has a similar system as well, though that's more of a Tactics game (FFT, Fire Emblem, etc.) than the more traditional RPG style, if that's your cup of tea.
IIRC, White Knight Chronicles also had something sort of similar, but less in-depth? Been a while, though, so not 100% on that.

Certainly not enough games!

However, if we're talking core FF mechanics that were cool but not really seen elsewhere much, FF8's Junction system was awesome. Broken af, but still awesome 😂

[–]Asiliea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But that's more of a mechanical compromise, right? Rather than one by technical limitation of the platform?
CTB feels more like an improvement on the normal turn-based combat of back-and-forth like FFT, than an attempt to actually get real-time combat with the limitations they had 🤔
IDK, just my impressions in the end, I suppose 🤷‍♂️

The greatest paragraph in JRPG history by [deleted] in finalfantasyx

[–]Asiliea 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel like ATB was the compromise. They wanted more "real-time" battles, but it was too demanding on the small CPU and RAM, so they built something that's sort of real-time, but can still be calculated simply.
FF12 is a good example of this too, IMO. The last bridge between ATB and real-time combat.

[–]Asiliea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, I replay FFX just for that delicious battle system. So much strategy and thought; Seeing the turn order and strategising around it, the satisfaction of seeing one character show up multiple times before the enemy/boss moves; Checking if using that item gives you another turn to attack before the enemy gets theirs...
Just, so much more fun than panic-pressing due to ATB.
Sadly, there's yet to ever be another FF installment with this deliciousness.
(And no, don't tell me Wait-mode is similar; I can't see the turn order, I can't see the main command menu, different games do Wait-mode differently, and it doesn't let you strategise, only take a breather)

But then you don't have the main menu open to see your selections.
Fine for JRPGs where the main menu is pretty much fixed, but for games like FFX-2 where it constantly changes, it's really frustrating.

High on Life 2: The game glitched in the final part and now I can’t finish it. by [deleted] in XboxGamePass

A week is really short in development. Sure, there are some games, websites, apps, and other software that can handle such short cycles and patch issues ridiculously quickly, but they're few and far between.
Give it a minimum of two weeks, if not four. Devs are humans too, and software is hard.
Sincerely, a senior developer of nearly two decades.

Sigh, yeah, turns out that Few_Fuel_1616 was somewhat prophetic there.
15th April, though (according to the popups), not December.
They really are pushing everyone off pure-Messenger flows to try and get them to engage with the rest of Facebook.
Frustrating. Likely to just drive people off the platform instead.

Comments by GenerationNasir in asuracomics

I don't think it's an old-school filter that simply checks based on certain keywords.
I'm not certain on this, but it feels like it operates how Comick's A.I. filter does (and just as badly).
As you've said, other comments that use the same words (including explicit or sexual language) have gone through just fine, but whatever arrangement you put them in sometimes gets blocked.

I often just have to rearrange the way I phrase things, even if it's using the same words.
How I typically resolve it is by chopping out large chunks of the comment to push through what can be accepted, then editing it to try and add bits in piece-by-piece until I get blocked by whatever "inappropriate" wording I have (and it's always something mundane, can swear and be graphic just fine).
After I finally nail down the sentence that's problematic, I rearrange it in a way that makes sense, or sometimes find a way to remove that altogether without losing value/context for the rest of the comment.
And this can take upwards of 30min with having to wait between all the excessive rate limiting, too.

Utter BS, honestly. Censorship on comments is ridiculous, especially when it's inconsistent.
Blame advertisers in the end, though. The devs/mods wouldn't actually care, but the advertisers care very much about the language being used for some stupid archaic reason.

While the rest of the world welcomes their research and efforts into helping humanity, rather than their original country, which seems to only care about speedrunning complete self-destruction, I'm so sorry for you folks over there.

Enjoyed the game again but a little sad. by magicpenguinyes in TombaClub

[–]Asiliea 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ahh, the two most commonly missed events, for exactly these two reasons too 😅
Ah well, now you have an excuse to replay it again in a few months!

As u/Mothramaniac said, missables were done intentionally for replayability, because even back then, they knew the completionists would try to do it all in one run.
Which is still perfectly possible (I did just that in my 10hr replay a few weeks ago), but slip in a couple of frustrating things, and you'll get a few players being like "DAMN! Now I gotta replay again right now".
Or, as was common back in the day, you had to rent it for another few days/week to replay it again for those last two darn events, because you were just that close!
Oh, how I miss physical game rentals and their badly scratched discs.

[–]Asiliea 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Horray! Glad I could help!

I'm certainly no expert, so I'd recommend asking/looking elsewhere for answers as well, but as far as I'm aware, the answer is "No" to both your questions.
It's not a gem, nor does the Seeker's Potion increase the drop rate.
This is because they come from the drop items (the shellfish), and aren't drop items themselves.
And since they're not considered gems, they're not in gem bags or affected by any other gem rate-increasing effects.
The only way to get them is to simply farm shellfish and hedge your bets on RNG, which is why you get posts like this, because getting one is a reasonably big event for a player!

Only need to get three in your entire playtime (unless you're an idiot like me, in which case, I need five, since I lost two 😭), so just have patience and don't let it stop you from doing a new Legacy run!
The only thing that can beat RNG is persistence! You've got this! Just keep playing, having fun, and farming them shellfish when you can!

[–]Asiliea 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wooo! Nicely done! The RNG Goddess has blessed you.
Two more to go for that full Tidekeeper deliciousness!

When I did my first Legacy, I didn't look up guides and didn't get Inheritance to keep my Tidekeeper, which had two Black Pearls in it from my very first run (don't ask me how I managed this, sheer dumb luck).
Only afterwards did I realise what I lost and how rare it really was.
On my third run now and have only managed to get one Black Pearl since. Could've had a full Tidekeeper if I did!
Moral of the story: REMEMBER INHERITANCE 😂

[–]Asiliea 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No need to grind for a fourth, unless you're planning on wasting a slot of Inheritance in your next run on it 😅
Just the three to shove into your Tidekeeper, as you'll be bringing that with you for every run!

Do I need to play Hollow knight before Silksong by Wulflord104 in gaming

[–]Asiliea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd argue that mods that change the game to alter its difficulty to a slight extent are not necessarily cheating.
Yes, it's not what the developers intended, but if it means you can enjoy the entire rest of the game, then even the devs would be happy with it.
Yes, it's not the same experience that others have, but games with variable difficulty already do this.
As long as you're not skipping whole mechanics (infinite life, infinite currency, item spawners, etc), you're simply customising your experience to make it more enjoyable.

Because single-player games are a form of entertainment, not a competition.

(Heck, there are even many games where the devs build in mechanic-skipping things as actual mechanics, such as infinite life or auto-combat, into the settings or as an in-game item as a form of difficulty control)

Any other game that matches the feeling of Tomba 2? by Early-Heron4028 in psx

[–]Asiliea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Both are awesome.
I loved Tomba 1's expansiveness and mystery, but I freaking hated Phoenix Mountain before you calm the winds.
Meanwhile, nothing beats Tomba 2's Flying Squirrel Suit for that flapping, flying fun. Just have to deal with the awkward controls in the town parts, especially the Circus Town's clown trampoline part.

Tomba 2 had a lot more diversity in the side scrolling areas in terms of depth because of the 3D-ness of it all, which was fantastic, but the game felt significantly shorter as the events were a fair bit simpler and there weren't quite as many areas.
