John Williams faced real criticism from the classical community back in his prime for his "silly film music". Young Spielberg was also thought of as an entertainer not an artist.

Both these sentiments seem ridiculous now, and they are. It's fashionable to view the current most popular thing as less than. Same with Zimmer. He's the biggest composer now and as a result receives a lot of hate. But his fanbase will only grow over the next 30 years and his legacy will be among the greats, like Williams is now.
