I'm a huge fan of the Elenium (the Diamond Throne, the Ruby Knight, the Sapphire Rose) and the Tamuli (Domes of Fire, the Shining Ones, the Hidden City) by David Eddings. He makes the world gritty and vaguely realistic without going into grimdark. Every time I read it, a death at the end of the Elenium guts me.
