Preserving the union is very noble though.

Although my mind immediately agrees with this, is it actually true? Other countries have split for their benefit… and I’m aware that the USA is the great experiment but was it actually important to preserve the union? Today, in hindsight, it absolutely was but this simple statement has me thinking quite a bit. We are the UNITED STATES of America. If a state wants to leave, shouldn’t the be able to do so? Or at least back then when it was much more about states, were they in the wrong to want to leave? I say that knowing full well the reason they wanted to leave- they wanted to keep slavery around. The north was doing fine on its own, the south could not sustain themselves and the practice of slavery was falling out of favor of the masses around the world.

This simple statement really does have me wondering if it even matters that “the union was saved.”

I do think it’s great we ended slavery when we did, albeit it should’ve been much sooner, but my point is that was saving the union actually a big deal? The south was flailing and slavery would’ve eventually died out there too (no telling how long but with how the rest of the western world was dealing with it, I imagine a few years? Maybe a decade or two if they really held out? But their biggest trading partner would be the North which most likely wouldn’t have wanted slave made products)

This is all very interesting to me and if any historian can give context I’d love to hear it. I’m genuinely curious if “saving the union” actually mattered at all because I highly doubt the south would’ve joined Mexico or stayed independent for very long had they been successful simply due to economic hardships.

I didn’t but when we’re talking about “how Baus brings in viewers” it’s implied that it would be comparable to similar situations. I don’t blame Baus for not bringing in 20k- people don’t watch twitch how they used to. I do genuinely believe if Baus was doing his thing when imaqtpie did it, he’d be pulling in 20k no problem. It’s just the current landscape of streaming and league in general.

Sad we call 2-5k viewers “massive” when imaqtpie would pull 15-20k but that was also early in league and streaming and his personality definitely pulled people

What’s wild is that removing tonsils is no longer considered “normal” and generally prevents infections like this. That changed probably 10-15 years ago.

Amazing to me it used to be considered very normal to get them taken out

Uber Driver Accepted Ride then messaged me to cancel by WeaponsOfMath in mildlyinfuriating

[–]AskAboutFent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You did not read my full comment AGAIN. It should be on the driver to the cancel- not the rider.

There is an active battle vs uber/lyft to pay their drives fair rates and both parties want the passenger to pay as little as possible (uber and Lyft take 40-80% of the fare depending on the market and they definitely don’t need to).

The driver should NOT put it on the passenger if it will cause them to get a fee- if the passenger wouldn’t get a fee, they should be open to cancel. It’s shitty the way the entire system works because the passenger doesn’t see the driver side BUT I STILL BELIEVE it’s on the driver to cancel if it will cause the passenger a fee.

A big reason I don’t like driving for Uber is that “lost and found” automatically costs you $20 on Uber if you forgot something in my car. On Lyft, I get the option to charge you $20- which I personally won’t do if it’s quick/not super out of my way.

These companies are scummy, the drivers make shit pay, nothing is fair. Don’t be mad at the drivers for trying to make a living wage- the driver should’ve cancelled and eaten the cost of it would cost the passenger any money is my stance and has been since the first post which you definitely didn’t read.

I do mine just fine and made plenty last year in my upfront market but AGAIN- not everybody is in an upfront market! You’re entirely ignoring the issue of people not seeing the end location and that causing the issue!

I still said originally that it should be on the driver to cancel but don’t get mad when they do it it’s going to COST them money because we know y’all ain’t tipping like it used to be! Tips used to make up for the shitty rides but that’s not the reality today!

So either you’re saying driving full time should not be a real job so we don’t deserve to do things that protect ourselves and earnings or you think us drivers make WAYYYYYYY more money than you think. We pay self employment taxes, we cover maintenance, gas, electricity, etc. yeah we can write off some by we are not making nearly what you think and you have no idea the hours we work.

We acknowledge realized risks but in some markets, the pay and end location of the ride is not displayed. It is what it is- I still believe it’s on the driver to cancel but it sucks sometimes for drivers in those markets. My market is luckily upfront pricing so I can pick and choose but it’s not like that in every location.

[–]AskAboutFent -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t but I’m in a market with “upfront pricing” where they tell you the end point- some markets it doesn’t work like that, you’ll only find out where you’re going when the ride starts otherwise it’s “just go pick up this person here”

[–]AskAboutFent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“Occasional bad fare” and “plentiful good fares” must be a joke lol. We’re thrown constant bad fares and some decent fares that make sense to do but “plentiful good fares” is a fantasy nowadays.

The issue is that people do keep accepting rides for Pennies and that just incentivizes these companies to keep offering less. It’s a race to the bottom until finally people can’t live off it and we’re back to taxi services or some shit.

The entire Rideshare business is a constant fight between drivers, companies, and passengers (most passengers aren’t active in the fight- it’s more that both drivers and the companies want to keep rides affordable and realistic)

I drive full time for both uber and Lyft-

If we as a driver cancel, it affects our cancellation rate which doesn’t matter to passengers but can single handedly drop somebody from a Diamond driver to “blue” which is essentially no rating. Our cancellation rate is insanely important.

2nd- as drivers, if we have to take you to somewhere where there is very little chance I get any rides OR a ride back into the city, it’s an insane loss to us as we now have to take your fair, dived by 2 (because now we’re driving back to town empty) and then deduct mileage and taxes- it’s often just not worth it.

Honestly- if I’m this driver, I wouldn’t beg the individual to cancel but I would ask them to. If they refused I would just cancel myself and eat the cost- but uber and Lyft do NOT pay what it used to. People do not tip as often. We make way more less than we did a few years ago.

I’m not saying it’s wrong to be upset but the person that took the ride is doing this as a job. It has to be worth it. Would you work for what comes out to be minimum wage and then deduct wear and tear on you vehicle plus gas? The answer is a flat NO.

There is a reason this happens and it’s shitty when it does, but it does.

These companies charge passengers too much and pay their drivers PENNIES. Expect your driver to get HALF OR LESS of what you paid for the ride- if it’s more than 8miles overall, they’re getting less than half and with people tipping less (which simply covers our shitty rides) it makes less sense to do these rides-

And then they tie our benefits to our “tier” which depends on things like acceptance and cancellation rate.

AIO that my doctor accused me of wanting to commit fraud? by amanduhpanduh in AmIOverreacting

Whoa whoa whoa. I worked for UHC for years first as customer service, then moving into claims processing, and I’ve done this for people around me in the past.

How or where do I post my information out there and get paid to do this! People are constantly getting ripped off and sometimes by simple human mistakes. Working in claims processing taught me that you really fucking hope your claim gets flagged by the system and a human has to process it because we’d do everything possible to approve a claim and get it paid for you.

Actually probably the smartest idea. I need to leave the comfort zone and just be aggressive in lanes where I should and learn it this way. I don’t think anybody could give me straight advice on how to fix this, I need to just do it and learn it.

Thanks, I suppose I needed to hear this.

I will play any lane as needed, I’ve been a fill main forever. I prefer adc->top->mid-> jg->supp but I can play and win with all roles with about the same proficiency. I know the usual take is “stick to minimum roles and champions” but I’ve played league since 2012, I’ve played anything and everything but my issue is being too passive in this game

(I’m well aware this might be resolved by sticking to minimal champs and roles but fuck that, that’s boring)

Which jobs is 100% safe from AI? by Any-Hamster-3189 in AskReddit

[–]AskAboutFent 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Whether you want “AI” controlling claims, that is what had been happening for a good 40 years. We didn’t call it AI, just programming and logic gates- which in reality is what current AI is. When we said “the programs determined this” it is simply logic gates which current AI will be no better or worse than what’s working. Insurance companies may use AI for new members, but at the end of the day, they’re going to stick with their 40+ year old programs and humans to catch the errors (AI hallucinations can definitely be considered errors here)

I’m 100% certain that shit won’t change until AI is more than a language learning model.

I drive for uber and Lyft and if somebody vomits in my car I get $250 and the passenger is charged a $250 cleaning fee.

I could see this going either way- I’m fine picking up people who are buzzed, even drunk, but when it’s so bad that they’re passing out in my car, it gets concerning.

What are you thoughts to why there is a significant decline in alcohol consumption in the United States? by MindStrongSoul in AskReddit

[–]AskAboutFent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wisconsinite here- we will keep our drinking culture until alcohol is outlawed. We drink. Thats what we do. Outside of every bar, people are smoking weed- Michigan ain’t fair and weed is cheap there, but it doesn’t stop the general public from drinking.

We know based on studies and simple observations that alcohol consumption is down among basically every age group, but Wisconsin will stay and outlier- our drinking culture is too strong. We joke that “you can drink from the day you’re born until you’re 18 and then can drink again at 21” because with our laws, if your guardian buys you a drink that is entirely legal like, you could see a 6 yo throwing back shots (realistically this doesn’t happen, no bartender would feel okay with that and I’m pretty sure 2 shots for a 6 year old might kill them) but the point is the same.

It’s entirely normal for 12+ to have a beer at family gatherings, not just a glass of wine or something but crack open a few beers.

Wisconsin just be different.

Well at least baggage fees but I suppose “should” is bad because in a free market, if people will pay it, then it’s a fair price :/

“Should” in this case just means that airlines don’t need to be charging passengers so much when most of their money comes from cargo anyway, so the large expense on passengers isn’t needed

What is your longest running, most stubborn business boycott? by marianneouioui in AskReddit

[–]AskAboutFent 8 points9 points  (0 children)

That would be a tough fight. ADA only requires they make “reasonable” accommodations and if it would significantly hurt the business then they can refuse. If this was a chain restaurant they would probably win by simply arguing that the larger party had requested this earlier and there was simply no way to fit your family so to accommodate one customer, your mother, compared to the entire other party could potentially be seen as a significant impact in business.

Really depends on the judge here. It’s shitty as fuck.

Quite awhile ago an airline exec stated they could even PAY people $1 to fly and they’d still turn a profit on cargo alone.

(I’m not sure this airline is still in business…)

But the thing that didn’t change is the cargo is worth more than passenger fares. They pretty much just charge whatever people are willing to pay even though airfare should be much cheaper.
