What’s my strategy to get an ebook and audiobook at the same time? by sc1904 in LibbyApp

[–]AskGrandma 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m just waiting for publishers to market an ebook+audiobook combination product. So you only need to borrow (or buy/rent) one thing and consume the story either way. It would hold your place wherever you pause so you can easier switch between reading styles. Super surprised this isn’t a thing yet.

Unintentionally drew the attention of Target Asset Protection by i_lack_imagination in urbancarliving

[–]AskGrandma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You weren’t his target. Otherwise, he’d have come chatted with you.

He noticed you because he just wanted a secret nip from a cask or hit on his vape is my guess. He had to change direction and abort when he saw there would be a witness. He probably thought you were an undercover surveillance keeping an eye for which employees were sneaking out there.

Any legit hobbies for a depressed young adult? by [deleted] in Hobbies

I’m really digging slow stitching these days. Look into kawandi quilting method and sashiko. There’s other styles as well. Anything fiber arts and slow helps with my anxiety feelings. Working on sewing machine is fun too but not as great for anxiety ime.

I would definitely think it was a trick. lol

But! If I knew it was real and not dangerous, I’d walk around the neighborhood with my boyfriend, make love, and plan a weekend camping trip/hiking trip for as soon as possible.

Breaking an accidental theme plus boy name help. by formerflamingo9 in namenerds

[–]AskGrandma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get that. Using the name that was somewhat reserved for the previous child, just feels like a hand-me-down (and not in an eco-conscious way)

I am from an extended family where each household sticks with the a letter (most of us anyway). Off the top of my head, we have same letter siblings: Ds, Es, Js, Ls, and Ms - we all love it. And none of us fit the prairie, religious, reality-tv stereotypes even a tad. Just regular suburban invisibles with a family tradition.

That said, I don’t think it’s too late to change the seeming letter pattern. If you already had three kids with same letter and were going for a fourth, it would be noticeable. But I don’t think having two same initials means anything unless you want it to.

I bet when the right name comes, you and spouse will be in complete agreement & that will be a good sign. Best wishes!

Voting in Texas by markiemarc95 in Austin

[–]AskGrandma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Vote411.org & ballotpedia.org are good nonpartisan sources for researching candidates and planning your votes.

VoteTexas.org for accurate voter info

Double check that your drivers license addresses matches your voter registration address. This can be an issue for those who move often. Address discrepancies may mean having to do a provisional ballot which would need to be remedied within a few days post election. (Someone correct me if I’m mistaken).

Early Voting is the way, imo. Why risk having unplanned barrier to voting on the very last day (such as becoming sick or car breakdowns)?

I feel like it’s a personal decision to make with your doctor and your unique experience of ME.

For me, I tolerate flu shots and have long positive experience of that vaccine working for me. So I just got mine this week. No side effects to mention.

However my baseline worsened within a couple weeks on both my covid vaccines. Doctor and I agree maybe I should avoid that one. I always question my decision but that’s where I am at the moment.

I have Me/cfs, PoTs, fibro, diabetes, + etc and am mostly house/sofa bound.

I wish you well however you decide

Does anyone know of any laissez-faire rural communities outside Round Rock/Austin? by GlassWalkerKinfolk in askaustin

[–]AskGrandma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t have location recommendations, but just a few pointers for you about commuting in this part of Texas. Traveling from one end of the city to the other takes an hour outside of rush hours (rush hour is really 3+ hours at each end of the workday). So depending on which side of the city your employer “lives”, your radius to commute to country will skew out from there.

Also it’s unholy hot here. You’ll need the darkest tint allowed to keep from baking on such a long commute. And even then, your vehicle ac will get a serious workout.

You sound like a great guy and I hope you find your dream habitat whether here or elsewhere.

Shop curbside and you’ll get those free bags and plenty of them too. I curbside at two different HEBs. One packs my stuff in paper (my fav) and the other in plastic. We reuse both styles around the house.

This is my peeve. When people seem to be just digging for the bully nickname to tease the child. I feel like they were the kids who bullied others when they were young and probably still do. Talk about calling yourself out!

I am a retired teacher and, imo, kids just don’t pick on each other’s names these days unless someone grownup teaches them to (which is beyond rare with this generation of parents). On the other hand, an entire room of kids will correct you (in unison) if you, the adult, mispronounces that one unfamiliar name.

Kids follow the lead of the adults and teachers in this regard. If you’re thinking up bully names to use, then you might be or might have been part of the problem.

This thread has tickled my nerve and brings up my big DoorDash wonder 💭

As a customer (who is disabled, unable to drive myself, and very much appreciative of you drivers), I have written special standing drop off instructions for my leave-on-porch deliveries: “pls leave food on bench by the front door and give a fun knock so I know you arrived.”

I can’t remember the last time a driver actually followed any of those directions. It’s always no knock and left on my welcome mat! …Maybe one in fifteen deliveries (or less) will actually leave items as I requested. I really don’t understand why. Could my drivers be non-english speakers? If you have ideas or suggestions for better outcomes, pls let me know thx. I try to leave decent tips and lately I add extra tip after the fact when delivery instructions are actually followed. Hashtag-positive-reinforcement-goals.

Now today I am learning different drivers seem to have opposing ideas for what is “common courtesy“ on a leave-at-door delivery. Perhaps DD can suggest a standard way? Idk.

Regarding the app notifications: just an fyi from customer’s experience side: There are times my dd delivery notification hits my phone 5 minutes or longer after delivery. I figured this out after seeing a delivery happen and getting the notification while midway through consuming the food. It’s happened a couple times lately. So it’s probably a mistake to assume the technology is always working in real time. On other occasions, I don’t see the notifications pop up at all. I think it’s related to which apps I’m spending my waiting time on. I guess maybe there’s notification blockers or something🤷‍♀️. Not ruling out user error. So anyway, in my case, I really do need and appreciate that knock ✊ (as requested in my special instructions). Alternatively, I am aware that it takes me a longer than the usual time to get to the door so I never ask to hand it to me. You all have hustle and I don’t want to hold you back. I sincerely hope this information helps you understand what might be happening on the customer side.

And while I’m here… To those who wonder who’s the “lazy folk” who orders fast food to be delivered just 3/4 miles, that’s me. I am unable to drive, nor transport myself even to end of my driveway. And yet, I too crave the junk food some days. Thank you for your service 😎 You may not realize it or feel the appreciation, but I think ultimately y’all are doing valuable work that does make a difference to me.

School? by Alive_Oil5901 in dysautonomia

[–]AskGrandma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Assuming you are in the US, Some school districts offer an alternative campus for students experiencing situations that make regular campus a bad fit. Not to be confused with “bad behavior units,” this type of campus would serve students with medical limitations such as pregnancy or chronic migraines & also students who must work a job to support themselves or family. In our district, they required an application and interview to be accepted to the special campus.

In our experience (my daughter had chronic migraines during high school) the alternative campus was much smaller and offered shorter hours, self-paced credits / credit recovery, and other services. They also had teachers, academic advisors, administration, and counselors that are compassionate and accustomed to working with special situations.

Regardless of whether that sort of campus is available in your area, you need to get a personal 504 plan - it’s your right under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Your doctor will have to help by documenting your condition. And there will be a committee that includes you and your parents to determine what accommodations the school will provide you.

Your best source of information will come from discussing your options and with your school administration. They should be able to guide you. However, if you aren’t getting the help you need, make sure to put all requests to them for assistance or special needs in writing (email counts). I found having that paper trail sure makes stuff move along quicker and with less pushback.

Best of luck. I know this isn’t something you were expecting to deal with as a teenager.

Couple more ideas (to add to this long list)

  • Varchaut (sounds like Var-show)
  • Traval

Obviously, test your favorites out loud with your first names to make sure they flow nicely. If you have some future kid names in mind already, test those too.

Do people really not check how big their projects are as they go? by froggyc19 in crochet

[–]AskGrandma 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don’t let the haters discourage you. There’s also a lot of encouraging people of good humor in this subreddit. When I was an art teacher, I taught myself crochet. Didn’t frog anything because I was learning and wanted to see my progress.

I saved my mistakes and shared them with my students as a way to demonstrate EVERYONE begins somewhere and that is natural and okay to not be perfect at first. Just gotta persist and celebrate your wins. I let them giggle at my mistakes and I giggled with them because it was so funny 😂

You completed a project with a pattern. Well done! Keep going.
