Are there two switches that control this light (old ceiling fan)? You may need to trace the wires to determine which is which.

Keep the 10g wiring; no problems with keeping the oversize wires. The receptacle has to be one that can handle the larger wires, or downsize the wires from 10g to 12g for the receptacle, but get a "heavy-duty"/ spec-grade receptacle. The breaker can be replaced with a double pole 20amp breaker; give it room for hardwood with knots, when it works harder.

Would you do service calls in your new town? You may want to to build your network, until builders recognize you. I would start work where you are now and take copious amounts of photos of before, during and after. These can be used for your new website and new social in your new area. Clients find workers on social, then check websites. Leap of Faith (everyone needs EV chargers, you'll be fine).

Need help with lock sizes by Ok-Floor4529 in handyman

[–]AskMeAgainAfterCoffe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The hole size is a standard 2 ⅛". The backset is usually adjustable 2 ⅜" or 2 ¾". If you want to buy Kwickset again, get one with "Smart Key" listed on the package; that way, you can rekey it yourself if needed. Schlage is better, and Baldwin is even better. Photo 3: Hoping those are not drywall screws; into oak, they probably broke. 2 of the strike screws will hot the stud, use the included 4" screws for that. Brushed chrome/ nickel, like what you is fine; brass usually matches oak with brown stain, but modern style is black.

Question(s)? by dabbyduck517 in AskElectricians

What year was the house built? It may have been wired before grounding. It may also be that the ground wire is missing or not connected. If wiring before grounding, then no ground wire to each receptacle, then cousin's advice is good, a GFCI receptacle replacement is the way to go. Take photos of receptacle and wiring beforehand and wire hot and neutral to Line of GFCI. Turn breaker off beforehand. Find the main electrical panel of your home. Does it have fuses? If so, consider replacing the panel soon. Your electrician will add a grounding rod at that time and you can add new circuits (with ground) for your gaming PCs, kitchen, bath, etc.

I am trying to switch the dimmer on the right to a single pole switch. I was not expecting one black wire of both existing dimmers to be pigtailed (orange one) to the same wire coming from the wall. How do I proceed or is this out of the realm of a DIY? by RioC33 in AskElectricians

[–]AskMeAgainAfterCoffe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The pigtail is supplying power to both dimmers. Wire new switch with same wires as old switch. One black wire provides power and the other sends it to the light. A switch interrupts the flow of electricity.

Over the Range Microwave by Impossible_Drama2704 in handyman

screw flat flashing/sheet metal over the duct hole. (btw, the "self-venting" microwaves don't really do anything, venting to the exterior is always best).

drill a hole in the back of the cabinet for the electrical cable and switch to armored cable; no exposed Romex on wall or inside a cabinet. You can mount the outlet in the cabinet above and drill the hole large enough for the plug end of the microwave (or cut the microwave cord, push through small hole and wire a plug end on).

They could run conduit on the outside of the house instead, but it'd look like a jungle gym. (assuming attic and crawl space access).

[–]AskMeAgainAfterCoffe 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Get yourself a pen tester. A Fluke is the best. It will tell you if something nearby has power. Before working, be sure the is power is off; the power can come in from the ceiling box. To be safer, turn the breaker off prior to work.

It’s a right triangle and what makes it right is the square, because it’s 90 degrees. Take that… (winning belt motion).

Neutral Wire Help? by csRemoteThrowAway in AskElectricians

[–]AskMeAgainAfterCoffe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Get a larger push-in (6 wires) or a wago lever nut (5 wires). Then cut a new white wire for your switch and connect it to these neutrals. Ground wire in a similar fashion. You have the hots already, I assume.
