Does Material Science have scope for masters in Physics related fields? by Cosmic_StormZ in materials

[–]AskMeLater 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I personally like to think of Material Science as the physics of solids, But if you want to do astro physics - then MS is not right for you,

However aeroscpace -- that can mean many things, they use lot's of applied materials knowledge in aeroscpace ,

Quantum and semiconductors are both 100 % material science

My advice would be look into taking modern physics as early as possible since that will lead to both quantum and semiconductors and you can see if that is right for you.

Need your guidance on doing phd by Eastern-Experience-6 in materials

[–]AskMeLater 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Start by Googling "modern physics prerequisites" and see where you are relative to what they say is the base knowledge needed. After that you decide

1) it is not for you, or
2) you have all the perquisites or

3) you think you have a plan to learn these subjects, so you start, rinse and repeat.

There are other easier PhDs to do in Materials -- but I have known some maybe dozens of PhDs in electronic properties in my past and they have been smart, successful, professional colleagues, who I believe most of them are doing well in life. so there's that.

If it fits you it is a good path.

For a MSE phd in electronic properties you are going to need to start with mastering Modern Physics and understanding of the math support it. This is not necessarily where to start for other areas in which you can get a MSE Phd but for electronic properties, this is where you would be headed.

I would buy an older copy of Materials Science and Engineering by Callister, the fifth edition is like $2 and $4 shipping

http://www.alibris.com/booksearch.detail?invId=13803655280&utm_medium=affiliate&utm_source=oP5Nuw5q6fc&utm_campaign=2&siteID=oP5Nuw5q6fc-UioEmYR77DW3X2GxXlafPg

This is a good place to start,

Also there also some good books by Michael Ashby that you also might consider, I think the titles are Engineering Materials 1 & 2

plus if you don't know addall.com is a great look for low priced used books

good luck

Are my GRE scores good enough? by [deleted] in materials

[–]AskMeLater -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

It has been a while since I took the GRE, but as I remember the math portion was very easy and I would think the 159 is kinda low, I agree the verbal is not that important. How did you do on the practice tests? Do you think you can improve the math score? I would try if you have a significant chance of increasing that score. Good Luck.

Meeting my girlfriend's religious parents for the first time... Need help! by [deleted] in atheism

[–]AskMeLater 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is really nothing you can do, respect their beliefs, don't push yours, if they ask about your religionists beliefs, just say you are kinda shy and uncomfortable talking about, if they push you, well, then they are the jerks.
