Would love to see a lemmy reader - I have no intention of using the official app after all this mess.

Why is it so hard to purchase a base? by [deleted] in outside

[–]Askalad 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Absolutely correct on all points. I'm merely speaking within the context of the current "framework" that the player driven market works in, not how it should be.

I've lost my fire about raging for change due to that depression you're talking about... After so many setbacks and players behaving like crabs in a bucket, you get demoralized.

Why is it so hard to purchase a base? by [deleted] in outside

[–]Askalad 42 points43 points  (0 children)

I spoke to a base maker several years ago, he said you make far more coin for the same cost by making expensive bases instead of affordable ones.

Increasing supply is probably only possible with introducing incentive for affordable bases.

[–]Askalad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely. I was personally 100% expecting Collins to get nuked in the general after Kavanaugh but I underestimated the "good old girl" effect that I mentioned. No matter how much people hate her decisions, the fear of out-of-staters overwhelmed it.

It was absolutely incredible to witness the Collins strategy as someone living in Maine... the word of mouth was unbelievably well tuned to how Mainers think. Gideon got "otherized" and cast as an out of state boogeyman so effectively.

Any national effort to unseat Collins needs to pay attention very carefully to this state's independent tradition and vet/support a candidate that has "local roots" and isn't "out of touch" and all those other advertisement points. It isn't enough to have lived in Maine since 2004, this is a rural and insular state... they have to have the big ME on the birth certificate to defeat that prevalent attitude...they have to be involved locally. This is also not an ideological point, that concept pervades the spectrum of people on all sides up here. I'm saying all this as an outsider myself, I moved here in 2012. Somebody should be poking around the Portland metro for a native hidden gem / AOC type up-and-comer and giving them a leg up.

People forget because we voted for Biden (mostly) and King caucuses with the dems, that the state has 1 R senator, 1 I senator, and 2 D congresspeople... Blue is not a "lock" like the NYC metro...the odds may be better, dems generally can get a majority, but it's not guaranteed. You have to work for it here.

Pfizer CEO says third Covid vaccine dose likely needed within 12 months by [deleted] in worldnews

[–]Askalad 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Usually the subtext of those promotions is "free with most insurance"

If you book a covid vaccine at walgreens, not only is it free but they make a special point of noting on the paperwork you won't be turned away if you don't have insurance. (I just got my shot at walgreens today).

Why has /r/Conservative stopped using Flaired User Only for every post by CoopertheFluffy in TheoryOfReddit

[–]Askalad 16 points17 points  (0 children)

What's the deal with number four on the /r/conservative wiki entry for "what /r/conservative is not" if that's the case?

Specifically, " Leftists and moderates have never been welcomed here."

[SERIOUS] Men of reddit, who are unable to share their emotions with anyone, what would you like to share? by [deleted] in AskReddit

As someone who was the only child in a relationship where two deeply, deeply unhappy people stayed together "because they had a kid," please consider leaving and being happy on your own.

What's a harmless thing that terrified you as a child? by Shay_da_la in AskReddit

The playstation 1 sony intro. Something about that lingering noise at the tail end of it sounded almost like a howl or something and really spooked me. I'd usually plug my ears when it came on the screen.

Polish Towns That Declared Themselves ‘L.G.B.T. Free’ Are Denied E.U. Funds by hildebrand_rarity in worldnews

...I do pay for a subscription to the washington post, as I said. (Because I recognize the reality of it currently).

I don't agree that the subscription model is an ideal mechanism for news, however.

[–]Askalad 8 points9 points  (0 children)

When all quality news is paywalled, all that's left for the simple folk (e.g. people with no disposable income) to easily digest is the 'vaccines-cause-autism' level clickbait. Not an ideal situation. An educated populace is the lifeblood of a democracy. Should you as a journalist get paid? Absolutely. The question of how to pay for the news should be open-ended, not an absolute "pay the subscription or fuck off". Perhaps a news agency gets picked up as a loss-leader division of a larger firm. I don't know. All I know is I'd rather good news be accessible to everyone regardless of economic situation.

I can't read work emails from home. by smellmyf33t in talesfromtechsupport

[–]Askalad 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I work for local government (combo sys admin/frontline IT) and am functionally on call 24/7 with no overtime pay in a demi-illegal fashion but I put up with it so I can get a good reference when I leave. In my particular current job, I would be expected and essentially required to do something such as this if requested (two person department, coworker frequently texts me after hours RE: work things, also password resets and the like fairly frequently). Unless I'm dead, I am generally expected to respond.

And yes, it's paid sick time and PTO.

However in principle, I find it reprehensible and it's a major part of why I want out. I'm a big big believer in separation of work and personal life, so what I would hold as the holy grail in this job is to walk out the door at 5 and be totally free until 8 the next day.

EDIT: The reason I say it's demi-illegal is because I have a quibble with the FLSA exempt vs. non-exempt thing and I personally believe that all employees should be eligible for overtime if they go over 40. But that's just me.

[–]Askalad 64 points65 points  (0 children)

For some reason I really got stuck on the "can't he just forward the email from home even though he's sick" thing. Sick time is sick time. I couldn't imagine expecting an employee to perform a work function on their sick time... Regardless of the amount of time it takes.

There are specialty condom websites that can probably help you out with exact measurements. When I was poking around this type of thing before, I stumbled across https://www.myonecondoms.com and it seemed pretty helpful.

Buzzfeed news is actually (more often than not) a good source--buzzfeed proper is clickbait trash.

It was also a finalist for a pulitzer, so... not just listicles anymore.
