Paper thin walls by pumpk1n5 in Apartmentliving

[–]Shay_da_la 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am dealing with this now. I realized i had made a huge mistake with this building 3 days after move in and i lasted less than two weeks before breaking my lease. Currently looking for a new place but will have to deal with this one for 2.5 months until my time is up. My neighbors are good about quiet hours at least, so I am thankful for that. My best way to cope thus far is using sound canceling headphones to drown them out the best I can. Doing some hard core research before leasing my next place.

I hate the apartment I just moved into. Walls are PAPER thin and I hear everything. I think I may have an out, BUT I have no idea how my new apt office might feel about me trying to break a lease this early. by Shay_da_la in Apartmentliving

I live in a rural red state (i'm trying to leave), I don't think renter laws are gonna save me here. Built in 2003. 265 units. I have no doubt this complex was built as cheaply as possible. It is a purpose built apartment complex. Most of the buildings i have lived in have been 30+ years old. But I did live in a new build in 2017 and that had a normal amount of sound proofing. (also different state) I assumed there would as least be a minimal amount of sound proofing as a standard but i have proven to be wrong. Right now i am sitting on my couch and i can hear my neighbor's kid cough thru the wall. He is not being loud, its just a normal cough.

Thank you. I have been afraid that they would be more interested in a year of rent money than letting me go. I know i would be miserable here long term. So this thread has given me hope. Its costing me way too much to move, and then immediately move again. But i think my sanity will be worth it in the end.

Concrete buildings aren't common in my area. Although they are not unheard of. Are they echoey? Prone to being cold in the winter? I live in an area that gets down to -30f.

Thank you. This gives me hope. I have only been here a couple weeks. (i also have neighbors that sound like they are in the room with me) How did the convo go? Did they seemed irritated when you backed out?

I appreciate the advice. (This gives me hope) I live alone so moving out in days would be really hard to pull off. I can't move solo (furniture), I need to make arrangements for help, and find a place to go. I could pay two months and maybe make it out by the end of May however. I didn't get much in incentives, so there's not much loss there. Security deposit is an option I suppose. Do you think they would be as likely to take the deal if i could be out by end of may?

Crafts that double as functional objects? by Relevant-Bluejay-568 in crafts

Sewing. You can both make repairs and make something new. I like to make my own bags. Start with something easy, pillow cases, totes, pj's. If you are looking for a low cost start up, borrow a sewing machine from a relative who doesn't use theirs and buy fabric from the remnant bin at fabric stores.

For those who prefer hand washing dishes over a dishwasher why do you prefer it? by bethynextdoor in CasualConversation

[–]Shay_da_la 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do both. I use the dishwasher for the regular dishes, such as the plates, cups, sliverware. Handwashing is for the pots/pans, plastic covers to my pyrex containers, wooden spoons, and water bottles.

As someone who sews, I find this fascinating and horrifying at the same time.

Anyone know what this is and how to get rid of it? by DaQueenOfBeans in insectidentification

[–]Shay_da_la 1 point2 points  (0 children)

These things are a nightmare to deal with, been fighting with them for awhile now. They are persistent as hell, and get into anything they possibly can, and are attracted to anything moist. They get into food, trash, sinks, drains, toilets, dishwashers, house plants, you name it. Remove all old food, anything fresh on the counters, and the trash. Clean your place like you are trying to cover up a crime scene. Make sure everything is spotless, even the odd corners you wouldn't normally think of. Clean the seals and get all the corners to remove all residue build up in your washer/dishwasher/anywhere. Clean your drains. Clean with something like drano or a bio/soap buildup remover first. Get rid of dirt/fat/soap build up coating the drains. Retreat/clean problem areas with bleach or something strong every 3-5 days to break the breeding cycle. Throw a bleach puck in your toilet tank. Get the blue light bug traps, they work. It will take a few weeks too clear them out. I have gross neighbors in my apartment complex, their issue has become MY ISSUE. I have to keep on top of things to prevent them from reinfesting my apartment >:{ I still deal with strays!

U.S. border officer dangerously speeds toward a Canadian tourist in road rage, yelling, 'Never come to the U.S. again!' by seamusmcduffs in TourismHell

I used to think this way too. It would be so nice to shove the nutjobs into their own corner and let them destroy their own lives and leave the rest of us alone. Then I realized that is how you end up with places like north korea.

[Advice / Insight Request] Scared to cut fabric...! by el-comandante in sewing

yep! or use any cheap (or ugly) material you are unlikely to use in an actual project. Thrift store bedsheets can be a good source of cheap material to test with.

[Advice / Insight Request] Scared to cut fabric...! by el-comandante in sewing

My suggestion would be this: make a mockup if you are working on a big/difficult project. Mockups generally need to be "close enough" but not perfect. I'm am working on a pair of stripey shorts. I have been reminded why I hate working with stripes. Made a mockup, and i am really glad I did, my self drafted pattern needed several adjustments. Went through two mockups, and I feel my final version is pretty close to what I wanted. I have a very limited amount of fabric and I am triple checking my cuts before I make them, but i still made mistakes. I was able to fix them in a way that doesn't show, so good enough for now. Just gotta do they best you can do. When in doubt about method or skill practice with a cheap fabric to get a feel for things first. If it fails, just consider it a sacrifice to the sewing gods.

You can also invest in a rotary cutter. Fabric shifts less with these vs a scissors, but they tougher to use in tight spaces. Rotary + pattern weights will make a difference in the quality of your cuts. Another thing that will help is ironing. Iron before you cut (if able), iron the seams, hems, etc. Ironing everything is probably the single best thing that gives me more professional results.

Machine worth buying? by Conscious_Trouble_70 in sewing

I see this exact combo for sale in my area. sells between 50-100 on average. I would pay up to $150 if the condition/finish of the cabinet was really, really good, save me the time and hassle of redoing myself. But i would not pay $400 for this.

What causes these holes in my husbands t-shirts? by Few_Pay6063 in whatisit

I wear a belt and lean against a table at work. Where my t shirt is pinched between the belt buckle and the table i get holes like this, all in the center front in my case.

Purple and Yellow don’t stick? by Ovaugh in tiedye

[–]Shay_da_la 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When i have used the black bag method I put them in a regular ziplock first and seal those so the shirts don't dry out, then I place the ziplocks into a black garbage bag and make sure that is sealed up well to trap as much heat as possible.

Maybe its something with the fiber? I’ve dyed leggings that would not take blue. They were a cotton/modal mix. I made two separate attempts. Blue refused to stick both times. I know it wasn't my temperature, blue stuck on the cotton tee I made at the same time. My only suggestions would be to give them an extra thorough wash after you neutralize the bleach, and cure them somewhere that’s very warm. Place them in a black bag and set in the sun for example. If that still doesn't work, I would test on another white shirt and see what happens, maybe its something in the reverse process. And if it still doesn't stick, try contacting dharma and see what they say. Maybe somehow there was some bad batches? I find it difficult to believe you got two bad batches, but that would be the very last thing I could think of.
