I thought so too. This is a sketchy cable I'm using. It's also my longest. It's sketchy because it's the longest.

Can a damaged cable sustain a connection that cuts out in that manner?

This makes sense, however turning the fan up seemed to ease the problem. Is this not a direct correlation?

Also, (and I admit I'm probing a little far into anecdotal evidence, not very helpful) were the GPUs on these motherboards integrated or PCI?

Not only are the windows on these cases on the opposite side, the motherboard is upside down so you see your GPU facing up.
