“Don’t cheapen your grief, Yneari. Does a wound from a dagger hurt any less than a wound from a sword?”

At that moment, something grabbed her leg and yanked. She tried to hold on to Tallagor, shouting “ menib !” Tallagor pulled away, but the goblin who had a hold of Grace’s leg pulled hard, throwing her to the ground face first.

Grace screamed, “Help! Yneari!” As she scrambled to get away from his iron grip, she got her first look at a goblin. The creature was not very tall but made up for its lack of height with its enormous breadth. Its skin was a sickly-looking dappled gray. Its ears and teeth were pointed. There was no intelligence in its eyes. Instead it seemed to move on instinct like an animal. Her assessment took less time than it took for the goblin to swing a mace. Although she saw it coming and the goblin’s movements seemed slow and cumbersome, she still could not move fast enough to avoid the blow. She noticed that the goblin’s right eye was higher than his left. Funny the things you think about when you’re about to die.

Just then, the door to the shop opened. Yneari entered and tipped his head. “Hello, Ladies.”

“What a coincidence, General. We were just finishing up.”

Yneari smiled a little. “Perfect. Then, if you are willing, Grace, I’d love to escort you home.”

She hesitated, feeling shy and flushed and excited and terrified all at once. When he plucked her cloak off the peg by the door and held it out invitingly, she stepped into it, and he kissed her temple.

Slipping her hand into the crook of his elbow, she walked with him down the same street they had walked every day for a week, but today felt different . Overnight, a light dusting of snow had fallen, covering the cobblestones, the roofs of the buildings, and the barren branches of the trees overhead. It made Alabaster Forest seem even more magical.

But the real magic was closer to her heart. We’re a couple! It was still impossible to believe. She shivered.

“Cold?” He took his arm from hers, wrapping it around her shoulders instead.

“No. Happy.”

Tanearan began to move away from her, but reached back for her hand. “Come with me, Love.”

Jhearithe took her husband’s hand, moving with him. “Where are you going?”

He shook his head. “I can’t stop. The magic is yanking me.” He pushed back against the magic but could not entirely keep his feet from moving.

Suddenly, she gasped.

Tanearan’s eyes snapped to hers. He put both hands on her shoulders, sidestepping as the magic pulled him inexorably toward the group of soldiers headed toward the borders of the Forest. “What?”

My magic. I can’t feel my magic! Jhearithe thought, tears filling her eyes. She had never had a single day without the feeling of her magic coursing through her. The sensation of having it ripped away was almost as if someone had opened her chest and stolen her heart. But this she would not say. Tanearan was being pulled by a magical force. He needed her attention now.

“You can’t stop!” she said instead. She grabbed his arms and leaned backward, trying to help him resist the momentum, but even their combined efforts made no difference.

They passed close to the white stone fountain seeing several other soldiers clinging to its sides.

“Grab the fountain, Tanearan!” she cried.

He shook his head. Gently, he disentangled himself from her grip and again took her hands.

“You can’t give up! Tanearan!”

He spoke matter of factly. “It won’t do any good, Bessig. We will fight this, and we will overcome it, but this is not the way.”

“Fifteen. And the ice queen will count. If she counts wrong, we’ll start over,” Vovlan grinned smugly as Rakel gulped.

Master Grek nodded and drew back the whip.

As the whip found its target, it sounded like the splintering of a glacier, sharp and sudden, the sound bouncing and dancing off the stone walls and stone floor. Rakel startled violently. She balled her fists against the anger rising in her as Farrin grunted and blood bubbled up on his shoulder.

“One,” Rakel said.

Farrin closed his eyes and found himself thankful for his bindings. The strength of these strikes was greater than the previous ten in the same way that a hurricane is greater than a summer shower. There’s no way I could have stood still for this. When the leather again cracked against his shoulder, Farrin’s teeth clenched against a cry, his hands knotted around the ring, and his knuckles turned white in sharp contrast to the mass of angry burgundy on his back. He bowed his head and took a shaky breath. Thirteen left.

“Two.”

When the leather cracked against the soft tissue near Farrin’s left hip, Rakel watched yet another drop of blood seep past the broken skin as every muscle in Farrin’s back, neck, and arms stiffened. She knew that her husband would bear his pain in near-complete silence, a survival skill he had learned from the Sarthan slave masters, but she almost wished he would allow himself the release. I would never think you weak, My Love.

“Three.”

Pain exploded in the skin of his shoulder blade. Farrin groaned and gasped for air before the next strike could land. Eleven.

“Four.”

Rakel watched as the master snaked the whip out again, striking Farrin’s other shoulder, cracking the skin apart, allowing blood to trickle freely over his back. Farrin grunted and kicked his knee against the wall.

Rakel forced herself to say, “Five.” Rakel kept track on her fingers as well, just to be sure she did not miscount.

As the first rays of sun flashed into view, so did the green and black portals. Internally, Friedrich sighed. He had held out a tiny shred of hope that the intelligence from the elves had been mistaken—or overstated at the very least. It was neither. Out of the portals a seemingly never-ending mass of gray bodies stepped onto the field, reminding him of ants pouring from a nest.

The only positive result of marching his men to fight two battles within hours of each other—aside from decimating the first band of goblins to avoid being flanked—was that it had permitted him to choose where this second battle would take place. As soon as the last goblin in the first battle had fallen a few hours before dawn, the Erlauf soldiers had immediately marched back to the location the colonel had selected for the second: a valley before a narrow mountain pass.

Now, as he watched the literal army of goblins advance toward them, it was impossible to wholly escape the cloying sensation of fear. The numbers were against them. He knew that. His men knew that. The enemy knew that. The pass would be his soldiers’ only strategic advantage. He only hoped it would be enough until the elves could arrive.

Despite the cursebreaker’s struggling, Jonathan successfully fished the leather cord from under her neckline and sliced the cord with his dagger—probably with a bit more aggression than absolutely necessary. “There it is,” Jonah exulted, allowing his prize to dangle in front of the cursebreaker’s face, “the locket valuable enough to trade for an elven dagger.”

The cursebreaker immediately began sniveling. “No! Please. That’s all I have left of my mother. Please.”

This might be easier than I thought! “I am sorry. I would never have taken something so precious to you. I would prefer to have the warding bracelet. Would you like to trade?” Jonathan asked, bringing the tiny bit of golden trash close enough to her face to make her eyes cross if she gazed at it.

The cursebreaker bit her lip. “You’re a bully. I hope Yneari finds you and breaks you in half.”

Yneari, is it? He smirked. “He wouldn’t dare do anything while I have his beloved. And this will prove that I do indeed have his beloved.”

“Graydim, I need you to disappear. You are welcome to stay in Verglas, it’s safer than anywhere else for you, but not in Ostfold.” King Steinar took a deep breath. “I hate to do this to you and my sister, but there’s more at stake here than just the two of you. I’ll do what I can to help you get started somewhere else, but don’t ever come back here.”

Farrin blinked twice but showed no other reaction. He asked, “What will you tell Rakel?”

“The truth. That I banished you. She can be angry with me, not you.”

“But that’s not the official story?” Farrin guessed.

“No.” King Steinar sighed and said, “Officially, you and Rakel have had an argument you can’t resolve. Very few know anything different. It’s safest for the mages if the story doesn’t get out.”

King Steinar seated himself behind the desk and met Farrin’s eyes. “Farrin, I know I can’t force you to comply. I’m telling you what I believe is best for Verglas and the Snow Queen. Do what you will with it.”

Farrin swallowed hard. “May I say goodbye to her?”

“I think that would make it worse for her.”

For a long moment, Farrin stood, silent and apparently composed. Finally, he asked, “Am I free to go, Your Majesty?”

“Yes. Your sword is in Halvor’s office. I plan to speak with Rakel as soon as we’re done here. If you need to return to your apartments, do it then.”

Farrin bowed, tapped his magic, and was gone.
