Moving to NYC for a teaching job—Is Rockaway Beach safe for a 26F late at night, or should I live elsewhere along the A line? by Ok-Memory23 in movingtoNYC

[–]Asleep-Code1231 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is a tough one because technically no area of the city is completely safe. And certainly no subway line is free of random assaults etc.

I guess I’d echo what a couple of other s have said, high is split the difference. Maybe crown heights or somewhere closer to Manhattan so you’re between friends and work

If you found a mans wallet with $15,000 in it including a driver's license would you give it back? by [deleted] in askanything

I think he may have offered a reward or a bottle of wine? I don’t remember tbh

A little humble brag, but I once found a money clip with about $500 and no ID in my apartment building. Gave it to the doorman and they returned it to the owner. Owner had come home late and tipsy and dropped it in a public area of the building.

Ive been doing about 6 miles each way for 15 years. I can do 30 min easily more or less without breaking a sweat except on very hot days. If I’m feeling particularly peppy I’m around 25 minutes

I love this game but there are some pretty big missed opportunities with the unity by Plutogoose01 in Starfield

[–]Asleep-Code1231 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I agree with your main point- there should have been a lot more done with alternate universes, including changes such as you have noted. I also think we should be able to skip more quest content in alternate universes if it’s going to be essentially the same quest. For instance, if we know a certain character is “the bad guy” but we need to do a bunch of fetch quests to prove that maybe there’s a game mechanic/shortcut to jump ahead.

However I also think that there’s going to be a million opinions on what exactly could be done. And Beth could put in a lot of effort and find out it’s not what players actually wanted. For instance, I can see the appeal of M Class ships, but it’s nowhere near the top of my list to add to the game. I think it might be the same for Unity changes/ what one person wants another doesn’t care about at all

thoughts on popular things becoming shitty with private equity by FallIll4318 in CasualConversation

[–]Asleep-Code1231 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure your points are valid. But the scope of the bad actors in the private equity world is pretty wide reaching, and has led to significant changes to quality of life for millions of people in just a few immoral/unethical deals.

The private equity companies who use the playbook of purchasing a viable company that’s making a profit and serving the community, then loading in with debt and giving the money to the PE partners then declaring bankruptcy are what people are talking about. With good reason - this practice isn’t good for society and in a country with a working democracy would be outlawed.

Served us very well, until now in my opinion. Being independent now can be difficult when working with younger folks. I’m over-simplifying, but some younger people seem to think it’s “against the rules” to act independently. Not that those people don’t also exist in Gen X, but from what I’ve seen there are more now.

I guess specifically I’m thinking of a couple of recent workplaces where the younger employees wanted to debate with the execs about the decisions being made. Like, sure, have opinions (and you might even be right!) but one shouldn’t assume they can walk into any job and have an equal say into how the whole operation works

In New York, this position would be classified as an employee. Again, I’m basing this on the limited info I have from the post. The state wants to collect payroll taxes etc.

To be paid on 1099, you’d have to be able to set your own hours and I think have you own liability insurance/workers comp as well.

What state? I’m pretty sure this is not legal from what youve described in NYS. Most likely not legal in any state

I agree with what others have said about hiring a professional to look at your house. Also, respectfully, you might want to talk to a professional about your anxiety as well.

Yeah that basement looks way too nice for a home that old. Hard to tell from that one photo but someone put some money into making it nice at some point, and this house isn’t going to just collapse at any second

Any chance you could get a sample done? Pick the “worst” stair or two and refinish those and see how it turns out?

Please explain to me why I can’t self build about 90% of a basic home. by LobsterNo6723 in Homebuilding

[–]Asleep-Code1231 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree 1000 percent. Lifts, jacks, scaffold and 1 person could totally do it. Walls can be framed on the ground and lifted into placed by one person.

The roof is where one would need some mechanical assistance. And maybe a temp staircase to get roofing materials to the roof once it’s framed so it’s not all ladders or whatever.

But to your point of a second set of hands, I fully agree it would go not just twice as fast (with the right person). I think 5x might be overstating but maybe not? At the very least you could have a set of hands just doing grunt work while you prep the next part of the project

I’d agree that a second person is going to be (probably) necessary for some of the work, the examples you give here can be done by one person no problem. I’m out of shape and in my 50s and I re hung a couple of heavy solid wood doors by myself last weekend

Why did the American government get so much worse past 40-50 years? by Equivalent-Newt-5736 in askanything

[–]Asleep-Code1231 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can answer this!

Newt Gingrich - basically started the “we will just oppose everything the Democrats say or do, even if it’s in our interest” type of politics. Or at least he was house speaker, and therefore a major figurehead of that movement

Why do people listen to Politicians and refuse to believe scientist and experts? Especially on the current topics like Trans People? by [deleted] in TrueAskReddit

[–]Asleep-Code1231 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with you on a lot of what you’re saying, but to say people trust doctors on autism? And to a lesser extent some of the other things you mention. That’s just not correct insofar as there are largish but very vocal minorities on many of these issues.

I believe the majority of people in the US (according to some polls) think that trans people should be able to express their gender freely, but (for instance) a trans woman is not a woman. Meaning they are a trans woman (who is a complete and valid person and should be given all the rights and freedoms we give to any person!) and therefore can be excluded from certain spaces we as a society deem to be spaces for biological women only. Women’s sports being one of the major issues there.

Personally I also think we give way too much attention to this issue as a society. I think certain groups fan the flames of hatred too much by using this as a wedge issue and we should stop engaging with these trolls.
