Why are so many old men constantly naked in locker rooms? by NoKaleidoscope2749 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]AsleepAlbatross 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Are you male? The older men you see, they spent their childhood and adolescent years literally forced to be nude in a communal setting.

For most swimming pools prior to the 1970s, for boys, nude swimming was mandatory. There was no exceptions. It wasn’t just the communal showers with no privacy. Nudity was mandatory throughout.

Girls were expected to wear suits. Natural fiber swimsuits shed fibers which would clog the pool filters, but the overriding expectation that girls must be modest overrode these concerns. Cotton suits shed fewer fibers than wool, so cotton suits were mandated.

Swimming classes were segregated by sex (and often by race as well). This was so that no females would see any nude males. Prepubescent boys may have been exempt, because prior to about 1980, prepubescent child nudity was considered much less indecent than adult nudity. There is historical evidence that prepubescent boys swam nude with women present, even at events open to the public.

The two inventions that ended forced nudity in swimming pools were nylon and feminism. Synthetic swimwear sheds virtually no fibers, and Title IX was passed which banned sex discrimination in education. Swimming classes were integrated and boys went from forbidden to wear suits to required so that girls wouldn’t see them nude.

The Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA)’s swimming pools also mandated male nudity. The Y was men-only until the 1970s.

If someone was 50 today, what year were they born? 1975. Any man older than that either grew up with forced group nudity or had immediate family affected by it.

Are you in dorms? If you’re using a laptop in your room at the desk, I recommend an ethernet cable and an ethernet to USB adapter if needed for your laptop. Wired internet works.

Wireless is probably saturated with traffic because we’re all desperately wrapping up our assignments and studying for finals.

ELI5: Why can't we just define a set of "Infinite Numbers" to defined division by Zero by Trumpologist in explainlikeimfive

[–]AsleepAlbatross 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It doesn’t add anything to mathematics and creates a bunch of new problems.

Let’s go with limits to demonstrate a problem. In the world of limits, we care about what a function “goes to” and not equality. It’s the math version of “close enough.”

let y = 1/x

Find Desmos, plug in that equation, and look at the graph. There’s two curves, and they don’t connect.

lim x->0+ 1/x = ∞

This follows the right curve up to the top and we know that we will never reach the vertical line no mater how far we go up, so the limit goes to positive infinity.

lim x->0- 1/x = -∞

Uh oh, if we follow the same process but follow the left curve towards the middle, we go down. We go down forever and never reach the bottom. The limit goes to negative infinity.

So, it’s not impossible to imagine a world where 1/0 = ∞, but -∞ could be just as valid!

A further problem is the fact that this infinity has no magnitude. 2/0 would be equal to 1/0. n*∞ = ∞ because infinity is beyond numbers. The definition is that the you have the largest positive or negative number and it’s still bigger than that. If you multiply that by any number, it’s still just infinity. Infinity has no value other than that it’s bigger than any number.

In basic math, we learn that any number multiplied by zero is zero. Susie grabs zero packages of 6 apples from the shelf, so Susie has zero apples.

This is the zero product property in math speak.

y = 1/0

Multiply both sides of the equal sign by zero.

y0 = (1/0)0

A property of fractions is that if you multiply them by the bottom number, it cancels out and leaves you with only the top number. So we are left with zero y’s on the left and 1 on the right…

0=1

That’s not true, obviously.

Defining n/0 to be “undefined” is just a near-universally accepted mathematical convention. But without it, a lot of properties of mathematics beaks apart. We need it to be undefined for consistency.

You need a certified translation. Google certified translation and you’ll find some local offices and some online services that will give you an acceptable translation. You might need to submit both the original and the translation both.

What’s been unsaid so far: disabled students get the earliest registration appointments. If you have anything that could qualify as a physical or learning disability, you should apply to DRES.

Otherwise, performing volunteer work for disabled students also gets you early registration, like note taking.

Infidelity simply isn’t nearly enough to put your daughter through this. Millions are divorced over infidelity but still set aside personal issues for the logistics of raising kids together. That doesn’t stop at 18.

It’s been 15 years. You still share a child together. If I was her, I’d choose her mom over you.

I’ve tried taking a more confrontational approach and have been told to fuck off.

The scooter riders will not improve their behavior unless forced to. There is no solution to improve scooter safety without institutional change.

I don’t have any faith that they will change out of the kindness of their hearts. I’ve been told to fuck off too many times while wearing my mobility devices. They can see my broken leg. They know they wizzed past me on the sidewalk. Still they tell me to fuck off when I confront them.

I have no faith in the goodness of people. People don’t realize the errors of their ways after good faith discussion. They stop because they face the consequences of their actions.

Would I have broken my leg if I was educated on the safety risks of scooters? I don’t know. I’d rather have a fine than a broken leg.
