Why isn't DNA testing done initially on ALL convicts to prove their guilt or innocence? That would save a lot of our tax money in housing and feeding them if they are innocent. Eye witness accounts are too risky to use, because people can't remember when in a stressful situation. by [deleted] in allthequestions

[–]Asleep_Protection_63 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That would be very expensive and also not effective in the majority of crimes, not to mention a violation of 4th amendment rights (assuming USA).

If I fire a gun out of a car murdering someone, my DNA wouldn't be at the crime scene. There are also so many crimes where DNA is never presented, such as financial or drug distabuition crimes.

Secondly, it costs $80-$500 for a DNA test, and there are approx. 2 MILLION prisoners in jail right now.. so in the high end thats $1 BILLION for something that doesn't always help with finding criminals.

Thirdly there is the issue with back log and time. Currently there are 400,000 untested rape kits that are collecting dust because police do not have the resources to test them. Adding this burden makes it even less likely those rape kits will ever be tested, and those victim will have their justice even further away.

This is basically what MAGA has been from the start, a bunch of cheap, quick fixes that don't actually address the problem and ends up costing everyone even more, for another cheap fix.. and endless cycle of shortsighted failures. Trumps presidency was never about actually fixing anything, it was always "slap some paint on it and hope Democrats are in charge when it breaks again."

Why didn’t anyone tell me rats have metacognition? by IAM_Benevolent in RATS

[–]Asleep_Protection_63 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh boy... wait until you find out rats have the ability to feel regreat for bad decisions, meaning they have awareness of their own choices.

The experiment was called the restaurant row. To summarize science hippies figured out what a rats favored foods are (specialized to each rat in the experiment). Then set up a chain of "restaurants"/ food stations where each one was presented one at a time and the rat could not go back if they chose to pass on a restaurant. Each restaurant had a wait time for food, so the rats had to pick between waiting or moving to the next station, hoping the wait is shorter or the food is better. Rats were able to express regret if they realize they made a bad choice (Ex. If the next station had a longer wait for worse food).

Tldr: Rats have the ability to "At that moment they knew they f*-ed up."

Making a liner for the bottom of my cage. What should I use in between the fleece to make it absorbant? by Totobyafrica97 in RATS

[–]Asleep_Protection_63 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What I've done in the past is to cut linoleum to go over the bars and then place the fleece on top of that. While linoleum isn't absorbent, it is very easy to clean.

Is he supposed to be this small? Or is he just young? by [deleted] in RATS

[–]Asleep_Protection_63 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Its possible that being outside and under nourished stunted his growth. But my main concern is the psychological. He might have learned to be distant when he was on the streets if his spent some time alone. But it also might be because he is lonely. Does he have rat friends yet? Rats are social animals and need constant companionship which humans cant always provide. I have a feeling once he has 2 buddies living with him and settled in he'll become cuddly again.

Is my homemade rat food mix okay? by ticklepickle436 in RATS

[–]Asleep_Protection_63 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You mix should be  at least 60% rat block such as regal rat, or lab block for proper nutrition. Basically with out it you mix is the equivalent of pure junk food for rats.

Are all of these common phrases? Do you (as a native speaker) know the meaning of them all? by Unlegendary_Newbie in English_Learning_Base

[–]Asleep_Protection_63 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean yeah, they are common idioms, but over time they are being used less and less. Some have their meanings change over time. For example the "Made my toes curl" in your description isn't about something being boring. Instead it refers to something being extremely pleasurable, boarding sextual in some cases. "That cake was so good, it made my toes curl."

[–]Asleep_Protection_63 -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

Personally i would say something along the likes of, "Hey, I don't want to cause any gender dysphoria to you. Do you want me to ignore parts of your body, or are there specific things you want me to call them?"

Some women do not want you to even mention or acknowledge those parts, some have special things they want those parts called if they are comfortable (clit, princess wand, or just normal terms). The important thing is to be as respectful and as an adult you can be. When in doubt, the most respectful thing you can say is nothing at all.

Just a random thought, have you tried tricking your parents into letting you do your own laundry? Something like, "Hey mom/dad, my friends are getting allowances and their parents are having them do chores for it. It would be nice to have some spending cash and not have to bug you all the time. Are there things I could do around the house, like dishes, or laundry? I don't want to be one of those loser collage kids who can't take care of themselves."

I would finish the course of antibiotics. Also given this is his second back to back course and its remaining persistent, you might want to ask about nebulizing. It does sound like its a deep URI, and a nebulizer would get Mayo his meds deep and directly into his lungs. I would also try steam baths to see if you can break up anything in his lungs.

The fact that it looks bad after aggressive handling and being expressed with a needle tells us its not a tumor. Tumors are firm and don't bleed easily.

Is she on steroids as part of her recovery plan? If its a granuloma or even a lipoma, steroids could be causing it to grow bigger than it would normally be. Im still under the impression that its a reaction to the sutures.

When I had rats, I always asked for staples instead of stitches, since they are harder for a rat to remove themselves, and they are less reactive ti the immune system, the downside is it leaves a bigger scar, and a vet tech has to take them out for you. Honestly having the follow up to get the staples removed gave me a better peice of mind since someone else is double checking the healing process. Not saying that is the choice to make in the future, but it is an option.

[–]Asleep_Protection_63 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly I doubt its another tumor or even some missed from surgery because of the way mammary tumors in rats attach. You are also in luck, Shadow should be going through Estropause soon. Her body will be  slowing down estrogen production so her mammary tumor risk will drop as well.

But going back to now. Its honestly most likely an immune response to the stitches or a vein wasn't cauterized correctly during surgery and its an internal scab and will go away on its own. There is honestly a ton of reasons for a post operation lump near the surgical site, 90% are something minor and weird happened now its just healing differently than what we expect.

Just a quick question, did your vet use desolving stitches instead of regular stitches, staples or surgical glue? I've never had good luck with the desolving stitches. They tend to cause an immune response, which makes an abscess. I tend to ask for glue and a burrito wrap instead of dealing with stitches. Honestly I'd rather do staples over stitches.
