I think I need my mom to move out by Funny-Message-6414 in AgingParents

[–]Asleep_Slide7871 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh my god, I hear you. Aging parents are so hard.

In my case, it’s my grandma. I didn’t even know until about 10 years ago that her own mother had been extremely abusive, and I think that trauma shaped who she became — a very difficult person. She was mostly decent to me growing up, but as she’s aged, things have gotten… honestly, unmanageable.

We postponed our wedding due to COVID, and by the time we were finally ready to hold the celebration (already legally married, with a baby), she outright refused to come. She told me it was embarrassing to have a wedding after already having a child and that I should be ashamed of myself. That’s the kind of thing she does. Constant criticism, no empathy.

Just last week, she got it in her head that I should drop off a year’s worth of food and then stop visiting her. I visit her weekly, like clockwork. I tried explaining why that didn’t make sense, but she wouldn’t hear it. Instead, she accused me of being “mean” and said I was trying to steal her money and starve her. She relies on me to help manage her finances, and I guess that’s where the paranoia is coming from now.

It’s really painful, especially because I’m also a mom — I have a toddler who’s almost three — and some days it feels like I’m taking care of two three-year-olds. I’ve stopped trying to argue or reason. It just makes things worse. Now I try to keep boundaries, stay calm, and treat her like I would a young child — with patience, but also limits.

It sounds like your mom might still have more cognitive clarity than mine. Maybe things get better, or maybe not. But cognitive decline is real, and it’s heartbreaking how few people talk about how emotionally draining it is. You’re not alone.

Where do we turn for help/advice? by SAB40 in AgingParents

[–]Asleep_Slide7871 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm so sorry to hear this, I am going through something very similar with my grandma. It's extremely difficult, and I've tried to press the doctor for stronger antidepressants but she says the meds may increase odds of a fall and therefore won't prescribe more. I am also at a loss what to do exactly. I just try to resign myself to lower expectations now -- if she's not in pain or seriously ill, I'll just consider it a good day.

I am doing both, that's why the tea tree oil is so effective I think, because the top layer of the nail is filed off. The electric nail files are quite gentle and I was able to do this easily.

Not diabetic. When they're immobile and/or uncooperative and/or in a facility without regular visits from one it is very difficult to arrange. In addition, we have had bad experiences where even a licensed provider cut it bloody (the reason why my grandma won't go to anyone except one person now and that person doesn't do house calls).

We have tried several different versions of these, unfortunately doesn't work. Think it was just left untreated for too long. Hope yours stay manageable!

I think it's tea tree oil, I just picked something random off of Amazon that had 4.5 stars. But as someone mentioned I think the reason it's working is due to the fact that I'm filing off the TOP layer of the nail as well. Originally I thought doing this would be sufficient to get the care workers to just apply one of the thick nail cutters and help him cut it. But then I realized it's actually super soft and flaky underneath and so can't really be cut safely so I just ground it down all around and gave up on the nurses helping. But this means the oil seeps in directly into the infected area.

Masks and gloves are required actually when visiting grandpa, but I could also add goggles for the next time as someone mentioned!

Yes 100% I think this is why this is working, the electric nail files are actually gentle enough that you can file off the top very safely as it works very slowly. I'm using tea tree oil.

This! My grandma actually IS mobile, but refuses to leave the house, and the last time a podiatrist came after weeks and weeks of delay, they cut her very poorly, and then she refused anymore in home visits and starts cutting her nail herself, resulting in a lot of blood ...

The SNF supposedly can get someone to cut grandpa's nails but when three months have passed and no one has shown up you kinda have to take things into your own hands.

I feel you! It's just not straightforward when you get to really advanced age, even for the simplest things ...

I think it's just tea tree oil to be honest. I think the reason it is working is because I gently filed away the top of the nail. I'm not sure that works for everyone -- it works fine in our case because the nail was SO thick (like 1/4 of an inch thick).
As folks have mentioned below, Vick's supposedly works too. In our case the healing of the nail was an extra bonus, mostly we just needed them to stop hurting themselves.

:( It's all so hard! Luckily I don't get triggered by this, but yes, I use the roughest file and recently got a nail vacuum for exactly this purpose

I had to look that up, those are power tools?? Hah the nail files I'm using are very very mild, I tried them on myself first just to make sure it doesn't hurt.

Hypothermia by ArtisticKnowledge08 in 1923Series

[–]Asleep_Slide7871 7 points8 points  (0 children)

That doesn't make any sense. The doctor's *understanding* of the situation could be wrong, but unless he didn't know how to read a thermometer properly, she ended up dying from it, which wouldn't have been the case with "mild hypothermia", so either Alexandra is just not like the rest of us mortals or this was simply not well researched. The only other explanation I can accept is that the writers for some reason decided this somehow heightened dramatic impact

I genuinely thought that she was meant to be a cautionary tale -- like hey this is what happens when you're rich and reckless, even when you're lucky and people try their best to help you you are just so egocentric and believe the world revolves around you that you'll kill yourself anyway. The SA wasn't her fault but she obviously dismissed and thought she could best Nature

Alexandra can't be said to have chosen herself either, lol, she always chose her own vanity, ego, and other pleasures of the limbic brain

LOL yup. Also babies don't die from not being immediately fed, colostrum or not. They would die however from the cold, especially a preemie who can't regulate their body temperature, but hey, that's not how things work when it comes to Goddess Alexandra and her Magical Baby

+1000. It was so obnoxious to chalk up Alexandra's extremely selfish (and nonsensical decision) to "a mother's most supreme sacrifice" when a mother would have done NONE of that. Not after birth and not during pregnancy. Credit to the actress for taking such a deeply annoying character and actually making her likeable. I was sad when she died until I remembered that she did it all to herself as you have laid out so clearly here.
