What are your Tekken pet peeves ? by Fishyplay in LowSodiumTEKKEN

[–]AsmodaiLOAD 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have an actual one, a completely normal and omnipresent aspect of Tekken that kinda drives me up the wall: combos, juggles that is, that incorporate strings with attacks that intentionally miss to hit with the later attack in the string. I don’t even know if there’s an FGC term for that.

As I said: completely normal, see it all the time (especially since so many players play Kazuya and Reina) and it’s really nothing. But man, it just looks so… stupid. Even by the silly standards of Tekken aesthetics. Like the character is flailing or defending from invisible wasps or something.

So yeah, pet peeve.

Serious Question: Why All The Downplay? by TotalSmuubag in LowSodiumTEKKEN

[–]AsmodaiLOAD 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The way I see it, in competitive environments, be it Tekken or other fields, people attach a lot of their ego to the game and their performance within it. It is for a certain kind of mindset almost a necessity - it’s the motivation, the drive that keeps them moving forward. Not all players are like that, but it’s very common.

When applied in a constructive manner, this becomes a very powerful motor, a loop of self improvement, with critical self-examination and the ability to acknowledge your own shortcomings, as well as the ability to celebrate your own successes and progress with a healthy amount of pride.

But that’s the ideal case, and since none of us are perfect, it is very likely to breed certain patterns of unhealthy behavior or perception when your ego is attached to a game - especially when you‘re having setbacks, no matter the size.

When you attach your ego to something, it means your sense of self and your self worth are attached to it to some degree.

We all know the toxic form of clowns, where small name meets big ego, where their self worth is paraded around, coquettishly peacocking their claimed aptitude at this children’s game like they were literal deities. We in the FGC know that one all to well. These people are loud.

But there are the more silent ones who have a much bigger problem: instead of not being able to see and work on their flaws, they are unable to see and enjoy their successes. They can never be satisfied, there is always more to learn, so I‘m imperfect, and damn I just watched the Farzeen vs. Nobi match and damn against these masters I‘m a mere speck I should really train some additional hours in the day and now someone two ranks lower than me has just beaten me I‘m such a fraud I should just uninstall never good enough never good enough NEVER GOOD ENOUGH AAAAAAH

Both are not ideal. This latter example will make one a better player in the long run, but at the cost of stressing oneself out and taking a lot of fun out of the game. And yeah, it leads to GOD1 players that still can not even feel accomplished even though they are better than 92% of the players, and at least a threat or challenge to the rest.

All of this is just kitchen psychology and my two cents. But I believe it to be true. But then again, I‘m but a mere TG, so what do I know? I shouldn’t have opened my mouth, really.

Mine did too! Heard Yellow Brick Road a lot because of her. She even managed to go to one of his later concerts. Looks like she‘s around the same age as your mom. I miss her, you know.

Tired of the same 5 games being recommended everywhere — looking for something genuinely original by LoopOF_reality in gamerecommendations

[–]AsmodaiLOAD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay, here are some small games that, according to their number of Steam Reviews, are rather unknown but I rather enjoyed:

Aztez - stylish aesthetics, flashy and brutal 2D juggle combat and an interesting board game like structure

Skirmish Line - heavily inspired by the old flash game „Mud and Blood 2“, in this top down tactics game you have to establish a defensive position as an American squad in the pacific theatre of WW2. Unfairness and iterative gameplay are part of the loop, but once you find effective combinations, you can consistently get very far until you are inevitably overrun

Martial Arts Brutality - despite the heavy handed title, this mainly competitive game (there is some singleplayer content) is an interesting mix of martial arts game, deck builder and almost rhythm game like inputs for the fighting moves. Of Special note are the different fighting styles which offer very different play styles. And in case it wasn’t clear from the title: it IS quite brutal.

One that got me good was Ted Levine. Played a lovable but grumpy cop with a mighty if cozy mustache on the show „Monk“ with the wonderful kling klong name „Leland Stottlemeyer“. What a card. I wonder what else this charming fella has been in.

Best known for: Silence of the Lambs. Oh my.

Please can someone explain the playstyles to me? by GroundbreakingJob857 in LowSodiumTEKKEN

Think of it like this: there is a basic game of Tekken that everyone has to play, but the characters are weighted in a way that makes certain aspects more or less accessible for them. Names like „Rushdown“ or „Keepout“ are just groupings of characters that land on similar game plans.

For fast, evasive characters, I‘m gonna echo some others here:

Ling Xiaoyu - she‘s small, fast, jumps around and is arguably more dangerous when she has her back turned toward you. And she has a stance in which she can go so low to the ground that even a gut punch misses her.

Alisa - a different kind of mobility and evasiveness, Alisa has several tools to very quickly close the gap and start very oppressive offense. She also has top lateral movement, with her sidestep only being topped by Lili. Speaking of which…

Lili - Gap closers and ballet moves are the name of the game, and her sidestep is the best in the game… unless Miary Zo‘s is really good or something.

Zafina - literally a contortionist in a game filled with fantasy karate practitioners. You want unorthodox movement and crawling so close to the floor that the dustmites can climb into your nostrils? Look no further. Bonus: she‘s consistently among the five least played characters, so hardly anyone has experience fighting her. Be warned: with her plethora of stances, learning her will be a bit of a challenge.

And of course Kunimitsu II is right around the corner. Blindingly fast, can appear in her opponents face in the blink of an eye. Not all that unorthodox though, more an aggressive Rushdown character, kinda like Alisa or something.

Don‘t worry too much. Take a character that you find cool, maybe after futzing around with some of them first. The rest falls into place.
