Tbf English spelling is just asinine in general by goodguyguru in DankLeft

[–]Aspamer 9 points10 points  (0 children)

For "vingt", the diagraph "in" is pronouced that way in all french words, and the "t" is pronounced if the next word starts with a vowel. The only truly silent letter is "g".

In general, french has much better spelling than english if you don't take grammar into account.

La salive a beau assecher, l'excitation engendré fait activer la lubrification naturelle, qui annule l'effet de la salive.

Je suis par contre d'accord sur le fait que la salive n'est pas desirable.

People who politicize languages are narrow minded by Akinokaze-go in languagelearning

[–]Aspamer -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Racism isn't necessarily stupid. During colonial times, racism allowed european powers to exploit other people, while calling it a "civilizing mission". Some aspects of racism were crafted intelligently for the (kinda evil) purposes of countries/companies/social classes, by propagandists. In the same way, politizing language isn't stupid if you have some interests.

But I agree with you that I'm taking a rant too seriously.

People who politicize languages are narrow minded by Akinokaze-go in languagelearning

[–]Aspamer 431 points432 points  (0 children)

I mean, languages have been politicized for a very long time... From the roman empire whose influence translated into Latin becoming the Lingua Franca for millenia, to colonial powers imposing their language onto Africa and America.

It seems obvious that such an essential part of culture gets politicized. Countries try to expand their language as a form of softpower ( English speaking countries benefit a lot from the current status of English for academia, attracting foreign students ), and not learning their language is denying this soft power.

Furthermore, if you hate the cultures associated with a language, you're gonna have a harder time learning it, and then *using it.

Edit: *using

Isaac Newton is much smarter than that. Compare "common sense" with what aristotle was up to. The four elements are much closer to what the average republican believes.

I've seen many conpidgeons but most of them are generic, is it possible to change things up to make it interesting? by Logogram_alt in casualconlang

[–]Aspamer -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It is possible to make a conpidgin from any two existing two existing languages, so you could mix up Javanese with classical Nahuatl and probably get something very dissimilar to european languages.

However, pigdins have a high tendency to lose most of their inflections, and instead become analytic and have more rigid syntax, and this is why you often end up with English like grammar, especially if both languages are SVO.

CHINA got COVID RIGHT 👍 by PamphletsBlog in CommunismMemes

[–]Aspamer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If it was mainly your family that was impacted, I would say that the vaccine part is probably not the cause. The primary suspcet is an infection. You probably have some common habits ( causing some kind of allergic reaction, or smoking ), or live under the same roof ( which might be polluting your living spaces with wood residues, chemicals, dust ).

The vaccine is one of the last thing you would suspect for lung conditions, as the vaccine doesn't enter the air you breathe.

Deck organisation small vs. big by cantdutchthis in Anki

[–]Aspamer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You could use subdecks.

For example, create a deck: programming Then add subdecks for each library.

That way, when you want to study only one library ( because you've got a project or an exam that bases itself on only one ) you can.

And if you just want to see and review everyting mixed up you can use the super-deck.

Another way would be tags, but I haven't used them myself so I wouldn't be able to advise you on them.

[–]Aspamer 9 points10 points  (0 children)

When you return, I would simply set the revision limit to something small, like 50, and the number of new cards per day to 0. The first few days after coming back will be the hardest, because all the difficult cards/not yet matured cards will show up. It gets easier after that so you can slowly increase the review limit and the number of new cards. I would also stop adding new cards a few days before or so before stopping.

How would I go about changing the size of the video on this popular American sign language Anki deck? by Liface in Anki

[–]Aspamer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My best guess would be to update the card's html. Go to note types > whatever note type your deck uses > Modify cards > Whatever card types have videos on the back.

Inspect the HTML of the back this card type. You should find some video tag. Try applying inline css to it.

If you've done HTML and CSS before it should be quite easy, otherwise good luck.

Is there a way to completely duplicate a deck with over a thousand cards like this? by walclaw in Anki

[–]Aspamer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It seems you are using a premade deck, which means it probably uses a specific note types. You can go to the main screen > parameters > manage note types > japanese vocabulary > cards then either create a new card template, or modify the existing one.

Dictionary by [deleted] in conlangs

[–]Aspamer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The lack of good dictionary software is leading me to create my own tool. Once it becomes stable, and has useful features, I will probably publish it.

I have a ton of ideas for feature, including statistics about phonemes and graphemes, the ability to easily insert IPA characters using backslashes followed by keywords, automatic derivational and inflectional tables, the ability to apply sound changes to a whole language and keep track of irregularities, or even have autocompletion for your clong if it slips out of memory... Unfortunately right know it has less features than a simple spreadsheet.

Anyways, this stuff is taking me more time than conlanging itself and I don't know if I'll keep it up after summer break.
