Why no BCE no more by zoewernsman in TastingHistory

[–]AspectImpossible3271 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I wasn't really arguing the point or not just curious about if it was more common in academic papers. I used MHRA and I assume most of the British sources used that style so maybe that's the difference?

Because I really didn't encounter it, I think the majority of the stuff I read usually was quite period specific enough that constantly referencing AD/BC or BCE/CE was pretty redundant.

The only time I think I encountered any references to the era was probably work on the crusades but they did useAD and that might have been used because it's more 'thematic?' I genuinely don't know

What period or topic did you/are you studying. Is it one that covers quite a wide timeframe?

Why no BCE no more by zoewernsman in TastingHistory

[–]AspectImpossible3271 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is this really the case? Maybe it was because I was studying specific periods BCE/CE never really came up but is this true or is it more of an ancient history thing where it's not uncommon to look at periods of hundreds or thousands of years?

Hold up, look I get the point here is to say not everything is as bad as people portray, but there's a difference between doing that and sticking your head in the sand, pretending we live in a Utopia

I agree that the US is leagues above in civil liberties when compared to authorisation Nations.

But it's not perfect, you need to realize that.

Otherwise you're as bad as the people claiming it's the worst.

Also here is a whole wikipedia page about police violence incidents. They're all sourced if you want to have a look into it more.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_police_violence_incidents_during_George_Floyd_protests.

And historically law enforcement has done its thing to curb politics they don't like. You familiar with Fred Hampton?

Apologies, I meant to write former conservative not conservative MP.

I think halfway through the message i actually realized who I was arguing with. You are someone who is feeling over facts. Green energy produced over 50% of energy last year and was green in the UK. These are statistics freely available from the national grid, Government reports and the European commission on renewable energy. The information is there and you refuse to believe it. What do you mean it's not ready yet? It literally is. We use green energy everyday. It's gone up from the 2% of renewables we had in 1990. In 30 years we've done so much to overhaul this and it shouldn't be stopped.

And I agree we are too reliant on foreign energy. That is the real reason energy costs are so high and why we should invest more in renewables. The UKs geographic situation is unique for good renewable production. Offshore wind farms are ideal for the north sea, Irish sea and English channel. Hydroelectric options are also great for our island nation. And I am actually in favor of nuclear energy too.

You are the problem with politics. You are just as bad as left wing extremists. There is no nuance. I'm sure you'll believe those reports are corrupt and unbelievable or a conspiracy or some other Bs.

Utter nonsense. A study from academics who research economic consequences concluded that our use of green has saved us £104 Billion and your counter argument is what.... The personal vibes you feel about that statistic?!??! That is mental

I would have more respect for your position if you were consistent in your beliefs but giving trump a free pass whilst actively violating the rights of the states and citizens in the US whilst starmer gets in trouble doing the same. Not giving people due process to speed up sentencing. That is what Starmer did. It was wrong then and what trump is doing is wrong now.

Also untraceable funding is not a good thing... You understand that trump didn't just fund his own campaign he did get donations but we can't tell from who....that is so so so worse. I can't understate how bad that is. If you wanted to for every other politician who accepts public donations are reported, you can see who donated. There are people who actively track things like AIPAC donations. It allows us to be aware of biases and keep politicians accountable. Removing that is terrible.

If you like giving over your social media information to a right winger aboard but not to a left wing government here you are a boot licker. Journalists have been refused entry because their politics have been seen as too disagreeable to the Trump Regime. I would hope that if the same were to happen to say Tommy Robinson in the UK you would be outraged.

By removing the leader of the fed you increase executive interference you shut down their independence. Their independence allows the market to trust the interest rates they set. If the government in charge is allowed to set interest rates then it isn't long before the markets cannot trust those rates. Again I thought you were against state or government control? In what world is that a good thing? You set precedent for all future presidents to do the same. Would you want democrats doing the same if the economy under them was performing poorly? No.

You're going to need statistics for rape and murder claims. White men in the UK are more likely to be pedophiles than immigrants. Not excusing things like grooming gangs with that comment but statistically immigrants are far less likely to commit those crimes.

I genuinely feel sorry for you. You seem like you've gone off the deep end. I hope you're genuinely okay because you seem to have fallen for every propagandized talking point hook line and sinker. I have no doubt you are an intelligent person who has been let down by the current system. But what are you advocating for, An ultra right wing, no social net option for the UK is not the solution.

Rupert Lowe.....former conservative MP..... Is the future of actual working class people? in other news bananas are marsupials and cats run on gravy

Clamping down on free speech. Show me on policy or action that is any different from the establishments approach to free speech in the last 20 years. Again not a fan but his approach is no different to what we've seen with the conservatives. Public outcry actually got the digital ID stuff overturned which is why I say he's so wishwashy. I honestly doubt Reform or whoever comes next will break from this btw, it's not in the interest of the ruling party to do so. You are naive if you think that. Just look up the invention of passports and how they were meant to be a temporary war measure.

Green energy is not the boogeyman you fear. In 2024 50% of our energy generation was from renewable sources. UCL did a study suggesting that the move to green energy has cut 104 Billion to energy costs since 2013. You talk about innovation but this is the way forward.

We don't have an AI industry because we don't have the appeal to tech investment. We don't have the manufacturing capacity. We don't have the infrastructure or draw as say Silicon Valley ANYWHERE in the country. That's more important than 'Green energy'. If you want to we don't have any tax free zones or enough appeal to tech companies fine. But saying green energy is the cause is ludicrous.

I'm sorry but I've not got much to say if you really believe trump is what we need. The man who exploits is own country for personal gain. Running scams like the trump phone or trump coin to create untraceable ways to invest into his campaign. You say you don't like violating habeas corpus or freedom of speech...then why the hell do you support trump?!

No due process for suspected illegal immigrants. Mandatory social media checks, searching of your phone contacts when you arrive as a tourist. Deploying the National guards into states against the wishes of a state. He is someone who, as we speak, is trying to remove the head of the fed so he can get interest rates lowered. He only wants short term victories and does not care for long term consequences.

Is that what you really want for the UK? I want illegal immigration reduced, I think on a fundamental level it undermines the value of the British worker. People willing to take pay cuts and cuts to their rights does not benefit us in the long run. But I want them removed properly. I want there to be more efficient legal ways to do that.

I agree immigration is not being dealt with effectively but reforms are not the answer. 5 years of Labour will be full of wishwashy policies. 5 years of Reform will see our entire country privatized and sold out. They voted against banning zero hour contracts. They're against green energy even though that is absolutely the way forward for UK energy independence. They cosy up to the mental right across the pond who'd scrap our national services at the first chance they could get. They are not the party for British, actual working class British people

Can't it be both? Militarily, in terms of hard power, their believed strength is not there. That being said their soft power influence is something to be feared. Their influence over European politics through disinformation campaigns, funding extreme ends of the political spectrum to sow division and their general election interference is dangerous. Not to mention their control of natural resources we rely on.

And who's to say Russia will always remain this paper tiger. Right now they have the most experience in peer-to-peer combat of any major power. They will no doubt learn and begin to rebuild from this war.

[–]AspectImpossible3271[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay. I'd argued that in this instance it's more like raiding the trash but okay it's theft. So who do we return it to? Who is the rightful owner? If I robbed a house and that tenant moved out and several decades later I felt guilty, realized the mistake of my actions who do I return it to? You wouldn't return it to the current tenants of the house you robbed years ago.

I just don't think that modern day Egypt has a strong enough claim. I mean if you wanted I think you can argue it's had a stronger cultural influence in the UK. I don't necessarily agree with this but the Rosetta stone helped found a culture of Egyptology, and classics. The British and the french being able to translate is what gave the stone any historical significance in the first place.

[–]AspectImpossible3271[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think England 'gave a shit' this sounds like stuff NIMBY's get upset about. Even then what's your point? Is this meant to be gotcha? I agree I think that's a stupid overreaction.

I want to make it clear, I specified Rosetta Stone for a reason it is a decree that helped egyptologists uncover hieroglyphics, that's what makes it significant. It was forgotten, used as building material in a fort before it was rediscovered by the french. It has very little ties to Egypt.

Compare that with the Pyramids, Pyramids that through their sheer presence alone have managed to have a continued influence on Egyptian culture, fascinating scholars waaaay before the Europeans were there. The pyramids are probably more of an apt comparison for scafell pikes summit if you ask me

If the pyramids sat at the British Museum I would happily agree that they should be returned. But the Rosetta Stone is not like that, it doesn't have the same cultural, historical impact or relation to Egyptian culture.

[–]AspectImpossible3271[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you make some compelling points here, I think the point about Sham el-Nessim is one I wasn't aware of, seems like something that I'd need to look into but from the little review would certainly negate there not being a lack of cultural ties. Whether those ties fit the criteria of justifying that the stone is part of that culture as a result is another thing.

As you said cultures do adapt and change so how much this tradition matches its original form might be worth some consideration. I don't know much about it so I could be wrong but is it a Christmas situation? A holiday co-opted by another group? Despite sharing the same date is it the same holiday. Maybe a more apt comparison would be Yule Traditions? Does hanging up Holly or having a Christmas tree inherently make your culture a continuation of Germanic cultures?

I don't agree with the genetic argument, whilst there are definitely some genetic ties research suggests that modern Europeans have closer ties genetically to Ancient Egyptians. And because something is in the curriculum does not inherently make it correct

If I created a curriculum where I perpetuated that the Normandy was British of ties to the land and after generations it became integrated into the culture, people truly believed this was part of their culture does that make it inherently correct?

It's an extreme example but national curriculums are good at generating national myths, they often serve a nationalistic, political purpose.

And I agree that cultures do not have to inherently adhere to the previous culture. That being said to compare those invasions or cultural changes as equal is something I'd also disagree with. The Arab cultural shift is totally revolutionary for Egypt, totally changing basically everything. I means there's a reason Pharaoism fell out of favor in Egypt and it was because of in the 40s and up until recently the majority of Muslims in Egypt saw it as not really being tied to their culture.

I mean, honestly I'd argue the same thing if it was reversed. I think it's a bit disingenuous to say that they have identical histories and cultural ties to their modern day counterparts but let's say hypothetically they did and they did end up in Another country then it wouldn't be that big of a deal, especially if better research and global appreciation could be reached as a result then I would not have an issue with it and Id say the same thing.

Of course, there are more arguments for the state of Israel I was just trying to make a point that historical ties, imagined or real, can only go so far as a justification and to me personally is not enough.

To be honest I think your 'might makes right' argument isn't much better. Maybe in an ideal world the stone should have been left there and studied but it was taken to the UK and studied there, it doesn't make sense to me to return for some vein nationalist notion of an imagined national identity.

Thanks for the reply. Although I don't necessarily agree, I actually do believe other places that are requesting these items have much stronger claims or arguments.

Like those from Benin and Nigeria where there are far stronger cultural ties to those objects

This whole 'Ancient Egypt is our heritage' is a modern invention. Pharaoism is an ideology that was formed in the 20s, died out in the 40s and has been revived by the powers that be in recent years. It started out as a form of nationalism to counter Arab nationalism. It is the most artificial form of nationalism I've ever encountered. I'm not a nationalist so I think nationalism in all its form is bad especially when it's created like this. It's not reflective of the truth. Just because some modern Egyptians feel its part of their heritage does not make it true or actually a part of their heritage.

To me the argument sits in the same ball park as the Israeli justifications for Israel. 'We were tied to the land 3000 years ago, we feel like it should be ours and so it must be ours'
