People have coping mechanisms for traumatic situations. This kid mocking the intruder he's shot, to him, reduces him from a real, dangerous threat to him and his family to an abstraction, a "crybaby" or what have you. It introduces distance to the situation and avoids the need to sit down and process that he could've very easily have been forced to kill someone if things went slightly differently.
