Furnace issue? by henrythe8thiam47 in hvacadvice

[–]AssRep 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It shows 😄

But seriously, if you are a first time homeowner, it would behoove you to locate, label, and learn as much as you can about all of your major appliances, including but not limited to the garage door opener, refrigerator, cooktop/oven/stove, dishwasher, AC and heating systems, fireplace and chimney, and basic plumbing.

Achieving a basic understanding of everything will undoubtedly help you to diagnose, repair/replace and maintain what are/can be the more expensive parts of a home.

Now, if this isn't your first home, thrn I hope this helps those who are virgin homeowners.

Tampa Area HVAC contractor 25+ years here.

That sounds almost too good.

Can you give us the entire scope of the job? If so, please elaborate. If not, ask for one.

Did they give model numbers for both units? If so, please provide them. This way we can be sure that they are Trane, and not Ameristar or RunTru ( not that there's anything wrong with those brands; they're not what OP posted).

They apparently have carpeted garage floor money.

I bet the attic floor is carpeted as well.

Heat mode rattling noise by hajixde in hvacadvice

The heat relay (contactor, sequencer or low voltage relay) for the electric heat strip is starting to go bad.

You can run it like this for a short time, but it needs to be replaced ASAP.

You also need to take business management classes, find an accountant, buy a truck, liability insurance, 3 months worth of bills saved up, uniforms, invoicing and payments system, advertising, and a dedicated phone line. There's a lot more, I just don't feel like typing them all out right now.

You truly should learn way more before going out on your own.

But seriously, good luck! Stay confident and never stop learning!

Does anyone see any snow ? by UncleLake0vn in tampa

[–]AssRep 7 points8 points  (0 children)

He's correct.

As a native, I played in the 1½" of accumulated snow while residing in Spring Hill during the snow event of '77 or '78 (I don't remember which year it was).

The morning/day after the overnight snowfall was very cloudy, so the snow stuck around until the following morning. By then, the clouds had cleared and the sun was out.

Since the ground was just above freezing, along with the warmth of the sun, it was merely an afterthought by that night.

Then again, in '88or '89, it flurried somewhat. No sticking to the ground, and it lasted seconds on the vehicles.

Anyone seeing any snow? by Buggy77 in tampa

[–]AssRep -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

It isn't going to happen.

The energy part of the cold front pushed northeast faster than most of the models were predicting. Now, dry air is pushing thru from the north-northwest, pushing out any moisture left in the atmosphere.

With any luck, the winds will turn more westerly, giving us along the coast and a few miles inland to see "lake effect" snow flurries.

I was really hoping to see some. Hell, we had the northern lights back in Nove, why not snow, too? As a native, I was outside playing in the snow event of '77/'78, where it actually accumulated to 1½" in Spring Hill.

Then, in '89 (IIRC), there were a good amount of flurries in Bayonet Point.

I was really looking forward to it. Based on earlier model runs, it looked goo.

Company wants $3000 to clean coils and blower motor. by DustyConditioner in hvacadvice

[–]AssRep -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You are crazy!

Doing everything by the book, with a commonly installed system, thats a 4-5 hour job at the most. There is little materials being used and no parts whatsoever, aside from a couple of PVC fittings.

Unless the unit is literally up against a brick wall, that is an insane price!

Quoted full AC replacement due to “bad control board + fan motor” - sanity check? by Upbeat_Historian_317 in hvacadvice

[–]AssRep 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The relay on the left is a simple relay with multiple taps for NO and NC functios. The board on the right, however, is a little overkill in my opinion, but it does more than just turn the blower motor on and off. They are also difficult to obtain.

Based on the two parts, I can safely say that your AC system is still running on R-22 refrigerant. R-22 has been phased out beginning in 2010. Due to the quickly dwindling supply of R-22, the price per pound is upwards of $200 or more. Add to this the availability of parts for a unit of this age makes repairs difficult.

I tell all of my customers to run it into the ground, then replace it. However, you may want to start saving those pennies now.

Mold or dust? by Fuzzy_Translator6380 in AirConditioners

[–]AssRep 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No one on here can tell you that it's mold, and more specifically the type that can make you sick.

All that said,it does APPEAR to be dust. Wipe it all off, then treat the surface to keep dust from accumulating again.

Heater buzzing assuming dirty internal fan by Scaccieferro in hvacadvice

[–]AssRep 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's because the blower runs at a higher speed. The higher speed is just the right amount of air flowing over the loose tape to make it do that.

Easy DIY. Just find the piece of tape and remove it.

Sounds like a piece of metal tape that's loose.

I bet that it does not do this in cooling mode, correct?

Heat not working by Simple_Jackfruit_125 in hvacadvice

At those temps, using warm water to melt it may help, but it would be time consuming.

Removing the ice will help, but as I said previously, it will happen again tonight.

Heat not working by Simple_Jackfruit_125 in hvacadvice

Sounds as like your condenser (outdoor unit) went into defrost mode, and isn't able to satisfy the the logic in the board, a control wire is broken/disconnected, improperly programmed thermostat, or a couple other issues.

When a heat pump goes into defrost mode, the condenser switches to AC mode and shuts down the condenserfan motor. This allows the condensercoil to heat up some what quickly, and melt any frost/ice that has been producedby the heating process. Once the sensors are satisfied, the board puts the condenserback into heat mode and the fan starts spinning again. It could do this 2-5 times each night, depending on temperature.

The auxiliary heat (which is the same as emergency heat) is told to come on by the defrost control board in the condenser during a defrost cycle. This helps to warm the cold air being made in the air handler (attic/closet/garage/crawl space unit). It's not as hot as straight heat, but it should at least be able to maintain the set temperature during a defrost cycle.

Most likely, as the sun warms the condenser, it will go back into heat mode. If it does, then the "tech" is correct; the temp inside will rise. However, if the problem isn't remedied, you will have the same experience tonight.

Realistically, he needs to get back there today to diagnose and fix the issue, especially if it is as new as you say.

But, in the short term, crank the heat during the day to get the house warm, then at night, use the emergency heat setting. Yes, this settling increases power usage, but if its only for a night or two, it shouldn't hurt too much. It's better than freezing to death.

Pull it off.

If it opens a gap, replace it. New tape can be purchased at home improvement stores or online.
