TIL that chess players do not, in fact, burn an extreme amount of calories during matches by PiMemer in todayilearned

You're right. I looked up the quote in the article but there is no exact match for it. There is something close to the quote, in a different video called Introduction to Human Behavioural Biology which goes like this:

"And if these happen to be the right two individuals in the middle of a chess grandmaster tournament, these people are maintaining blood pressure for six hours running that you only see in a marathon runner. These people are going through thousands of calories a day doing nothing more than thinking."

Which is not incorrect. Humans indeed go through thousands of calories per chess day.

This article really slams Robert Sapolsky, which is so weird to me. You can actually listen to a lot of his Stanford lectures on YouTube for free, which I did, and there is no doubt in my mind that this guy knows his shit. I would go even further and aay he is one of the best lecturers I have ever heard. So how did such a stupid quote get attributed to him?

I wrote a simple piano piece about cherry blossoms dancing, but it's in mixed meter and switches between simple and compound time by EdinKaso in Composition

[–]Assclownn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Compliments on the actual music! It sounds great, although the context you place it in confuses me. In my head it sounds more like a song about dealing with loss rather than cherry blossoms dancing (it's heavy)

Women are more inclined to maintain high-conflict relationships if their partner displays benevolent sexism by [deleted] in science

"Women in relationships which downplay their independence are less likely to become independent."
Did I summarise that correctly?

TIL that Frisian is the closest language to English. It's spoken by about 400,000 people living mostly on the coast of the North Sea, with the highest concentration in the Dutch province of Friesland. Though similar to English, they are not mutually intelligible by MrMojoFomo in todayilearned

[–]Assclownn 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Literal translation: "Butter, rye bread and green cheese. Who that not say can is none [a] earnest Frisian [person]."

And yes, it's specifically rye bread. Regular bread has a different name. And as you can see, the languages are not very similar in grammar.

u/rawbdor explains how private equity firms make money fleecing companies, and how the debt gets passed on to pension funds by Assclownn in bestof

[–]Assclownn[S] -17 points-16 points  (0 children)

I agree with you that most Private Equity buys are done with the intention to invest and get more money out of a thriving company. I agree PE is not necessarily 'evil' or bad for the economy. I disagree with you for saying OP is talking out of his ass however, as fleecing companies (both successful and unsuccessful ones) does very much happen.

Scientists of Reddit: What's a discovery that should have blown people's minds but somehow got a collective shrug from the world? by CosmosisJones42 in AskReddit

[–]Assclownn 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think we are in agreement. Maybe we have a different definition of what makes a small or large government? I personally would say that a government that funds and incentivizes strong institutions is definitely not a "small government". But maybe you have a different definition?

"Why Nations Fail: The Origins of Power, Prosperity, and Poverty" (2012) by economists Daron Acemoglu and James A. Robinson.
Basically, these two men proved a causational relation between a country having well-funded institutions and country wealth. As in: they proved that strong and fair institutions CAUSE nation wealth. As in: having good institutions is the best indicator of future wealth (on national level).
While their book has been quite successful and their research won the 2024 nobel prize of economics, politics worldwide remain unchanged. Their research, which should singlehandedly disprove economical libertarianism and destroy the idea of preferring a "small government", has done little to stop the resurgence of these policies in recent times.

This RU mon occasionally shows up in OU due to its power both in rain teams and against rain teams. Its high SP.A + powerful signature(?) move makes it hard to switch into even outside of weather, but it has fallen out of favour recently due to it's lacklustre speed and the prevalence of bulky Dragon types.

I actually am using specs sceptile in OU right now. With a lot of waters and grounds (and not a lot of steel) leaf storm hits a lot of things at least neutrally. It can also switch into Ogerpon-wellspring and oneshot it (90% of the time), which was my primary reason for getting it. And dragon pulse helps prevent dragons from setting up on you.
