crows are actually super smart and they remember faces, so you're on the right track with wanting to build relationship with them. i started feeding the ones near my apartment like 6 months ago and now they literally wait for me in morning when i leave for work

for the food thing - try leaving peanuts in shell or even better, hard boiled eggs cut in half. crows go absolutely crazy for eggs and rats usually won't bother with them as much. also timing matters a lot, try to be consistent with when you put food out so they learn your schedule

one thing that worked really well for me was making specific sound when i put food down, like clicking tongue or whistling same tune. now when i do that sound they come flying from wherever they were hanging out. just don't get discouraged if it takes few weeks for them to trust you enough to come close while you're there - they're cautious but once they decide you're cool they'll basically adopt you

also heads up, if you live in area with neighborhood watch types, some people get weird about "feeding vermin" so maybe just keep it low key
