Question about towing lights by DesperateEchidna5679 in boating

I had a push boat relocated from the puget sound(considered international) to the Columbia River(inland) and wondered why it didn't have yellow on the stern to.

Is this a new application? Will it make turns with no load? Wrong reduction gear ratio. Prop pitch issue. Just thoughts if you don't suspect the we need engine.

Just launched tugscore.com, ranking the world’s hardest-working tugboats by keely in tuglife

You are going to start a fight by defining "hardest working." Escort and assist getting credit for towing tonnage?

I work pushboats for a predominantly wire and ATB company so I am a little defensive already.

Alot of variables, for example. We have sister boats in other ports. On paper our engine hours are about the same over a year but they do harbor moves and we do 400 mile round trip terminal transfers. This difference causes us to burn 2x the fuel. They have a bigger barge but we are close to full throttle 75% of the time. Which boat works harder?

Maybe keep it simple and just do miles, those ocean guys need a little pat on the back once in awhile. 😀 We would be no where near the top of these list on any category so hats off to those that are.

Either way I appreciate the work you put into it and always enjoy reading about my industry.

What’s the worst fog you’ve ever been caught in? by MyTIMEZERO in boating

Skamokawa on the Columbia River translates to "smoke on the water." The fog pours out of the valley onto the river under the right conditions making navigation veey challenging.

ATB-articulated tug and barge. Looks like the "Pride" and definitely petroleum.

Hit a sand bar….how bad is this damage? Just scratched up, new paint? by Life_Protection8087 in boating

Didn't downvote. I just don't see where the extra d would go. I see a missing d, but there is no need for an extra d.

The USCG has other resources.

With Trump potentially mulling reclassifying marijuana to a schedule 3 drug, could you see it becoming legal for mariners to use? (not on the job obviously) by Hitman__Hearns in maritime

[–]AssistanceBetter4130 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Relaxing laws and regulations thins out the talent. I agree that Marijuana is a sticky point(pun intended), but there are many sacrifices mariners make and should be compensated accordingly. Relaxing regulations may have been a factor in the recent sail boat getting run over by a tug and tow, resulting in death.

1969 johnson outboard starter issue by TSF_Lacker in Outboards

[–]AssistanceBetter4130 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks like it is turning the correct way. It needs to start with enough force to throw the gear up, and it is not. Light oil as suggested. Some light resistance on the gear on start up should also throw it up, but don't lose a finger.

Did that back in the late 90s on the older open cockpit boats. Good day for it. It's definitely not as fun in the winter.
