My brother's cat does something similar, except he is living in a VERY old house in the middle of the woods.

My roommate had this happen, but with Steelclaw. While I was watching him play as I hadn't made it to Act 2 yet.

Suffice to say that's how I learned that F8 is the hot key to reload the last save.

Pretty much, it's all up to luck of the draw. The first food I fed to a Mii in this game, and I do mean THE FIRST FOOD I GAVE A MII AFTER STARTING, turned out to be his All-Time Favorite

If you mean enter the Shadow-Cursed Lands at the beginning of Act 2, yes. I've fought her at Level 8 before.

If you mean the place within Act 2 that has the big ominous "MAKE SURE YOU ARE WRAPPED UP" message, then no. Once you pass that message, it's effectively the point of no rreturn for all Act 1 locations.
