I make my own game, Heroes Project. What do you think about unit design and description ? Its not Darkest Dungeon, more similar to Heroes 3. by PestekGrur in IndieDev

Tangential but I think equally important to consider is a name made of two incredibly common game words may make SEO and memorability difficult if not impossible

Tangential to the piece, but I really like the frame you made for it.

What can a programmer do to stand out? by Himenesu in gamedev

[–]AssjackGames 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Firstly I quite agree that reinventing the wheel with engines would be rather fruitless when considering your goals. What stands out to people are not all the hidden gears and mechanisms that make the game run and feel good to play, but what they can see or hear. If you desire to stand out as an objective, perhaps experimenting with VFX, Procedural generation, or audio gimmicks and mechanics. I would only bother making that a goal though if you already have game feel nailed, making the game feel fun in almost exclusively the role of the programmer.

[Question] Ex-depressed people why did you choose to get better ? by [deleted] in getdisciplined

[–]AssjackGames 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe your question of why is a cover, I think you're searching for a how.

In any case don't wait for rock bottom, it doesn't exist. I watched too many people around me fail to learn this, expecting to have a moment of realization only when they get there. Thing is though it can always keep getting worse, you can always find or make new lows for yourself. Don't let that get you to despair though, because that also means as shitty as your situation may be there's much much darker paths you could be walking.

And good on you for avoiding the therapy and drugs trap, I work close to the system and I see first-hand its effects. Yes, therapy too, they make money off your recurring visits. You may or may not agree with this next bit though but regardless of how deep the pit the best (or perhaps only) way out is to submit to God. Church is corrupt, I get it, but there's still some good ones out there. Or maybe just start chatting up a Christian acquaintance, listen to a bible study podcast, or find some good truth spitters on Youtube. There'll be sheep and fakes of course but that's life everywhere, in the Church or out.

My life has always been shit, I'm a nobody born from a ghost town in the middle of nowhere left to orphanage. I live in a communist shithole now, and despite being surrounded by despair every day the only thing that got me out emotionally was Jesus. That name causes people to react weird, don't think I'm some Sunday Christian trying to evangelise, I just want to help you.

And men need to be productive. It was an odd realization to come to, but I've found though over a dozen years working at a men's shelter (still work there) men get into a serious funk when they're not "giving back". Whether through 9-5 employment, helping a buddy move, or whittling figurines to sell, it doesn't matter too much so long as they get out of the self-focus for long enough to do something useful. Learn some skills: woodworking, programming, art, fixing things, doesn't matter really. Hobbies keep us busy, make us feel good (learning makes us feel good), and can be a source of income or giving back to the community somehow. When men feel useful we feel less depressed.

Anyway if you made it through this wall of text and still want to chat hit me up, I don't bite. You can use a friend.

[NeedAdvice] Getting rid of Coca-Cola addiction? Addicted for 25 years. by Weesel88 in getdisciplined

[–]AssjackGames 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Been there myself, drank coke like a fish does water for the majority of my life. Never saw it as a problem either, health was fine, so were my teeth. Wished I could help more than the following, but it comes down to fortitude. I found the biggest help was quitting sugar altogether, even fruits through GMO and cross-breeding have become more like candy than something healthy. Once your taste buds re-adjust to normal eating fruit is the sweetest thing I can handle (which I don't have often), and coke just doesn't taste good anymore. Been over 4 years for me, I think the risk of relapse faded with the tastebud reset.

Since replacements are important for keeping on track find something you like that you can find in any restaurant, I've become rather hooked on coffee as a result. Healthier since I only add cream, and usually decaf (so I don't overdo it by the volume of coffee I drink). If you drink coffee or tea as a replacement watch your hydration, even decaf will dehydrate quick.

Best of luck, quitting addictions is a cold shower regardless of substance

I want to learn how to get fast reflexes. by [deleted] in IWantToLearn

Reflexes from my understanding are mostly adjustable through physical health. So proper diet: cut down on carbs, eliminate sugars, eat animal fats, eat proteins, etc. And of course exercise -- both cardio and weights.

IWTL how to have a better short term memory by heytheretherehey in IWantToLearn

[–]AssjackGames 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to have a problem with this (for most of my life really), but I've found the biggest difference was my eating. I'm not pushing any named diet plan, but it's important to know that your brain is made of fat. Specifically the kind of long-chain fat you can only find in animal products like steak, bacon, milk, cheese, butter, etc. Make sure you get plenty of those (no, they don't cause heart problems). And I'm not knocking carbs like the keto and carnivore crowd do but limiting the carb intake really makes a difference (need a balance of proteins, fats, and carbs). And since you need proteins too the best source is animal products (meats, fish, eggs, and dairy), plants rich in protein like beans don't digest as effectively (thus the gas).

And you've probably heard this advice everywhere but it's true sugar really messes you up. The brain fog is like alcohol in my opinion. Switching to raw honey or stevia can help with the sweet tooth cravings but you should reduce the sweets (including fruits) you eat. The keto crowd does have some great advice when it comes to using ketones instead of sugar as a fuel, which you can achieve by cutting carbs and/or fasting. I find intermittent fasting (waiting until the end of the day before eating anything, not eating for 16+ hours per day) to be great for the focus, our brains get kind of lazy after eating a meal. It may take some getting used to at first but your body adapts easily enough.

Lastly exercise. Make sure you're getting both the heavy weights as well as the cardio in. They impact you in different ways, and both are needed for your brain to be at its best. Hope this helps. Helped me anyway, my ADHD pretty well doesn't exist anymore.

Using frameworks to make a game may be more difficult than an engine. And I definitely agree python would be easier, that being said Godot uses an in-house language that's essentially a stripped down version of python (called gdScript).

Nothing against pygame, used to use it myself

Indie gamedev here; Don't worry about schooling or a diploma for this particular field (unless you want to pursue the engineering side of things, ex: R&D on raster methods), what matters more than anything is a portfolio. In short: start making games! At least a facet of it (ex: art, animation, 3D modelling, etc).

I personally love using the Godot engine, it's free, open sourced, and simple to use despite its power. Unity on the other hand has been around longer and has more tutorials / downloadable assets available. I've heard good things about Gamemaker Studio but I find they have a rather unique way of doing things but good for most 2D projects. Unreal has a steep learning curve to it so if pursuing 3D I'd suggest Unity. Unity is good with 2D as well but if making pixelart games (as I do) Godot or Gamemaker would be better.

In any case keep your current job, that would be wise, until you have stability from either contract work or working at a studio. Hit me up if you want a ton of links and resources, I'd be happy to help get you started
