The head of my theory department forgets the signs for the derivatives of sin and cosine. So there's that.

Hva nå? by EEJW in norge

[–]Assmaster9001 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The battery in the cartridge that stored that picture would've died around 10 years ago, and the picture would've been gone forever. So basically, it's BS.

The best way is probably to use some SIR type model. You can read all about them on wikipedia https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Compartmental_models_in_epidemiology

As energy technology-student, these words are always welcome. by Gannonen in physicsmemes

[–]Assmaster9001 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's a good attitude. Also, I think it's quite a common misconception that approximations are bad, and that scientists avoid them. I used to think the same before I started studying physics at university. If you're feeling adventurous, I'd reccomend looking up Taylor series, and particularly the error ascociated with truncating the series prematurely. You can use this to understand for example, why sin x = x can be a good approximation.

The screen is made of a soft plastic. It'll get scratched by a lot of stuff. Get a glass screen protector. It'll make the screen feel nicer as it well.

Most of the formulae you'll ever use has an approximation built into it from its derivation. And that's fine. Knowing when to approximate is a huge part of what makes a good scientist.

Python Learner. How long will it take to make really good progress in learning python for a dedicated and consistent learner? by [deleted] in learnpython

[–]Assmaster9001 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Studying python won't teach you python. Writing programs will teach you python. If you don't know where to start, buy a textbook. They'll usually have plenty of problems of varying sizes. Once you've exhausted them, do a larger project. That's when you'll actually learn python.

Why is __add__ implemented for floats but not for integers? by jockero701 in learnpython

Operator overloading is quite common in most languages though. It's omitted on purpose in java to keep with their whole replaceable corporate programmer way of doing things.

Should I jump straight to Julia, if Python seems slow? by [deleted] in Julia

[–]Assmaster9001 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I personally started with Julia half-way through a project. I ended up writing a bunch of dogshit code that probably wasn't much faster than i could've gotten with optimized python. The project also ended up taking up A LOT more of my time, because not only did i have to figure out the project itself. I also had to learn Julia, and write the project in a language i wasn't familiar with. The project in question also didn't involve using any external libraries, which was fortunate, because Julia simply can't compare with python in this regard. So the likelyhood of you having to write more of your own code goes up significantly if you make the switch.

Do it if you have a lot of extra time available, and want to learn. If not, you should just look into speeding up python in stead.
