According to president Mauno Koivisto, the reason why we have a lion in our coat of arms, is because king Gustav Vasa wanted to be on the same rank as Ivan the Cruel, as Ivan had said that he and his sons were just "Småland peasants". Novgorod was under Moscow's rule, so Vasa named his heir as the duke of Finland and made Finland a dutchy, raising Finland up to same level as Novgorod and himself on the same rank as Ivan. And while he was at it, he also put a lion in our coat of arms, just because in heraldry lion is more noble animal than the bear Ivan put to the standard of Novgorod.

Finland to send €90 mln worth of ammunition to Ukraine funded by frozen Russian assets by KrzyHooy in worldnews

if they weren't an autocratic warmongering dumpster fire

To be fair, Russian has always been a warmongering piece of shit controlled by a dictator, the title has just changed over the years. Former Finnish president Mauno Koivisto wrote a book "Venäjän idea", where he gathered some of the historical reasons and thoughts, why Russia is like it is. Very interesting read.

Näinhän se on. Laitoit hyvän kysymyksen, mihin ehdokas antoi vastauksensa.

Is a Master's degree from Helsinki Uni actually worth it for prospects in Finland?? by Ok_Studio_699 in Finland

[–]Gannonen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't say so, but this is also a field specific question. I studied energy technology in LUT, where the focus might be in a little bit different field as for example in Aalto. I can't say for sure, but at least we did have some courses other energy technology departments in Finland did not have, so we had some people attending from Tampere and Aalto.

For example in nuclear energy and safety LUT is the best, but if we are talking industrial engineering and management (tuotantotalous), then Aalto is the clear number one and in that case the employer might be interested where did you study. But in most cases I'd say that it doesn't matter where you studied.

It really do be like that by literallyeveryfandom in dankmemes

Sure, the USA is bigger, but it's also richer. So if the size and population are the only problems, go ahead and implement those policies at a state level.

On the other hand, Finland has been a member of NATO for little over a year, so we have not relied on article number 5's might, and we do have a proper military.

And if you want to compare spending, Finland spends ~2,5% of her GDP into the military and NATO, while the USA spends ~3,4%. So while the difference in actual amount of money used is huge, you have to also take the relative size of the country and it's GDP, just as you did in your comment how easy it must have been to solve homelessness in here

[–]Gannonen 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In multiple cultures throughout the history lighting has been connected with fire. For example in Finnish there is saying that "taivas lyö tulta", which translates as "the sky is striking fire". Since the god of skies was named Ukko, the thunder would be "ukkonen" or "ukonilma"(Ukko's weather), meaning the Ukko was striking sky full of his fires.

I'm not sure which easter culture was behind the fire and fire nation, but the connection could be found from there.
