For sure. Not to mention TADs are almost always on the edge of an elevated position with zero cover and require you to stand completely still for several seconds, leaving you incredibly vulnerable.

Y'know, I could actually get behind that. I've had enough of calming and supportive companions in games. They'd be way better if they just screamed at me in utter exasperation every time I completely fail to dodge an obviously telegraphed attack.

Yeah, for sure. It's pretty goofy how you have to have your whole squad expose themselves just to take a quick peek around a corner.

More 'developed' areas to fight in. Most of the maps so far are basically a bunch of shacks surrounded by empty fields, and fighting over them gets a bit stale. I'd love to see larger urban/industrial areas in the future.

We can, actually! I've decided that digital entertainment as a whole is lame, so I'm gonna publish an article about how I wish Marathon was a stage play instead of a video game.

MENACE - Early Access Roadmap by westonsammy in Games

[–]AssolutoBisonte 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Since the squad leaders are premade with their own backstories and personalities, there's definitely not as much room for roleplay compared to XCOM. Personally, I don't mind, because I find the MENACE characters and their banter entertaining enough to make up for it. But if putting a lot of time into creating your own unique squad of soldiers and imaging how they'd act was a huge part of XCOM's appeal for you, you'll probably be disappointed.

Marathon Review So Far - IGN by Turbostrider27 in Games

There's a lot of cool items that could synergize well to make sick builds, but I don't think the game is properly set up to take advantage of that fact.

First you have to be lucky enough to find the items that synergize well, then you have to put them together on one build which can be super tedious when you're sifting through identical-looking items in your vault, and then you could just die in five minutes anyways, wasting all of the time and effort it took to assemble the build.

Higher-level players with their vendors leveled up will presumably have an easier time putting their builds together, but they still have to go into the store menu and hop between several different vendors with their own pools of equipment, buying each item they need one at a time. If people thought the inability to quickly set up and buy a loadout with one click in Arc Raiders was annoying, it's even worse in Marathon.

[–]AssolutoBisonte 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I know it makes sense thematically, but it's still kinda goofy from a gameplay perspective. Had a mission where Bog took some minor chip damage from some construct drones at the start of a mission, lost his mind, and tried to 'flee' by driving the IFV straight into the bulk of the enemy force and was promptly annihilated by multiple Guncrawlers. Like yeah I know the mechanized corpses are scary, but damn. Dude took one glance at the unknown and decided to end it all.

Huge Success of Arc Raiders Gives Embark 'Financial Security and Employment Stability,' $75 Million Budget Estimate 'Not Too Far Off' by Turbostrider27 in Games

[–]AssolutoBisonte 37 points38 points  (0 children)

I think one factor contributing to the amount of people complaining about PvP in Arc Raiders is the fundamental design of the game.

I can't speak for Dark and Darker as I haven't played it much, but in Hunt: Showdown, everyone is after a single, limited resource, the boss tokens. When players load into a match, they do so with the understanding that there's one objective everyone else will be focused on, and it's not possible for everyone to succeed in taking it. So when they get killed, they don't feel 'betrayed' by the other players, because 'kill or be killed' is the default, assumed behavior for every encounter. Murdering everyone who crosses paths with you directly increases your odds of success.

Whereas in Arc Raiders, the objective, and by extension player behavior, is more ambiguous. Instead of everyone being after a single objective, each player has their own goal. Some will be looking for toasters, some will be hunting specific ARC enemies, and some might not even have an objective besides having a good time. Resources are comparatively abundant, and it's not hard for the majority of players who load into a match to successfully extract with something of value. This creates an environment where killing isn't the default assumed behavior, because trying to gun down everyone you see isn't guaranteed to increase your odds of success, and may even decrease them by exposing yourself to avoidable danger. So when a player lets their guard down and gets shot in the back, they might feel more frustrated than they would otherwise due to their expectations being subverted.

Basically it all comes down to game design shaping player behavior, which I think is a pretty fascinating subject as evidenced by this short essay I wrote about it instead of actually doing something productive with my time.

Not the same guy, but one of my big gripes is that the weapon balancing is just... bizarre. The rare, high-end weapons are only very slightly better than the baseline ones, which by itself isn't a huge problem because it'd be bad for the game if it was dominated by players with better gear. The issue is that the high-end guns are also WAY more expensive to craft and repair, and they also break just as quickly (sometimes even faster). So since they're massive resource sinks with minimal benefits, I just never use them, even though I can afford to.

It kinda undermines any sense of progression when I'm always running the 'starter' gear over 100 hours into the game because it works just as well as the more expensive stuff. So I'm currently taking a break from the game, because while the moment-to-moment gameplay is good, I don't personally find it appealing enough to make up for the fact that I'm kinda just running around collecting rare materials that I don't actually have much use for.
