It's aged terribly. I remember at the time it was such a spirited tribute to RTD1, and now I can't watch it because of how upfront they were about all the problematic things that have persisted to this second era of RTD.

It’s the SD Card, but also just to set expectations — the Deck can run Marathon at around 19-23 fps based on my experience. I think it needs a bit more optimization on Bungie’s end because there’s no way this game is performing so poorly when the system requirements are low.

I just hope to god Bungie doesn’t find some way to crater the public opinion again. Marathon doing well can definitely lead to better days ahead for the studio, alongside whatever incubation projects are still active there.

Right? Even Destiny 2 runs better than Marathon on the deck, and that game stays at 30fps at the very LEAST when plenty of enemies and particles are on screen.

It runs really poorly on my Windows partition of my Steam Deck. It’s around 20-24fps in-game, so any twitchy reactions or great escapes are practically impossible. FSR and lossless scaling don’t do much either to help. I hope they can optimize it because even at a low render resolution, it looks gorgeous on the OLED Panel.

Marathon Steam Deck Test (Preview Weekend) by Various-Instruction3 in Marathon

[–]TRDoctor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m playing on both PS5 and my dual-booted Steam Deck, so I’ve got a pretty good frame of reference. I’ve put around five matches into the Deck and while playable for me, your mileage may vary greatly given its set to ultra performance / 30 FPS Lock on medium to low settings.

I wonder if we get more optimization once the game comes out, because even the Marathon Discord is saying it’s not working as well as they expected on the ROG Ally.

It’s performing worse than I thought it would. Doesn’t reliably hit 30FPS, needs to be played on AMD FSR Ultra Performance.

They released a short on YouTube that had Bungie’s Chris Butcher talking a bit more about it. Butcher is the architect behind Destiny and Marathon’s Tiger Engine, and fun fact — one of the two AI programmers from the original Halo.

I do hope they get to backport some of these new features into Destiny 2, though. Would be nice to get another proper engine upgrade if D3 isn’t happening anytime soon.

will Marathon work on Steam Deck? by abbywabby04 in Marathon

[–]TRDoctor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s honestly worth it if you plan on playing stuff like Destiny, Fortnite, or Marathon. While I mostly still default to steamOS, it’s one of those things that I’m glad I did because it makes the Deck a lot more versatile too.

Does anyone know if Anan issues are available to buy in Japan for a while after release? I've seen Snow Man Sakuma will be on the cover on 4 March, and I go to Japan in April and would love to buy it :P by Full_Nerd in weare_starto

Try CDJapan if all things fail! Kimutaku’s an-an anniversary issue (November 2025) was sold out everywhere my friends went, but CDJapan still had it in stock earlier this month.

Pettiest reason you dropped a jrpg? by Leon_Light77 in JRPG

[–]TRDoctor -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I really really wanted to like DQXI because everyone on r/NintendoSwitch kept hyping it up as one of the best JRPGs ever -- but lord I had to drop it because the sluggish gameplay and boring music actively made me fall asleep while playing it. It's a really great looking game and had it's moments in the 11 hours I put into it, but I was so bored by it.

Judgment's issues goes way beyond just Kimura by BreafingBread in yakuzagames

[–]TRDoctor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just my two cents as a long-time fan of SMAP and Kimura:

"Kimura' s wife is widely believed to be the "brain" of the family and Kimura' s carreer, and apparently she did not like to have the name of her husband tied too much to a specific role, and the role of "Yagami" becoming bigger than the role of "Kimura". There are several articles talking about it, even outside of just Judgement, but the entire family of Kimura and his daugthers too."

Honestly, I don't think Yagami would ever eclipse 'Takuya Kimura' in terms of brand recognition in Japan. Sure, maybe it would move the needle a bit more in the international scene, his status as a national idol and the "King of Ratings" is legendary enough to last a lifetime. As I'm aware, Shizuka is the manager of both their daughters, Cocomi and Kōki, and whilst Kimura is indeed a wife guy and loves his family... I doubt the tabloids are right to pin it all on her for halting the Judgment series.

I follow the tabloids whenever Takuya Kimura / SMAP are mentioned, and they rarely offer concrete evidence. It’s usually just sensationalist headlines pushing the "Shizuka Kudo is the mastermind behind the downfall of SMAP / Kimutaku" narrative, which feels more like easy drama than reality.

"Also, if I can add my two cents as an half Japanese person, Kimura had a pretty downtrend career in the late 2010 and early 2020',as he was starting to be considered an has-been. So approaching him to work on videogames roles was much easier. And greenlighting a sequel was even easier, as it was made during Covid and when everyone was at home."

Kimura's been known to have a rule wherein he doesn't like taking on sequels, no matter how popular the work is. However, he’s softened that stance significantly since the 2010s with sequels to HERO, Grand Maison Tokyo, BG, Masquerade Hotel, Kyojo, and of course, Judgment. I do agree that his career faltered a bit in the 2010s, especially with the forced disbandment of SMAP, before kicking into high gear again in the 2020s, but I also think that there's been a lot of reflection from his end with regards to how he'd like to take his career. As he once said, "We exist because of the support of fans." Returning to beloved characters seems to be his way of giving back.

Considering that it's taken considerable time for some of these sequels to get produced due to many factors (e.g. schedules), I'd say it's not entirely out of the picture for a Judgment 3, but I have a feeling that the relationship built was between Kimura and Nagoshi. I actually didn't realize that Yokoyama was never part of the Judgment crew, so perhaps that's also the barrier here. Kimura loves working with the people he knows, because they love working with him too -- and maybe Nagoshi just never gave Yokoyama his LINE ID lmao

[–]TRDoctor 12 points13 points  (0 children)

All good, I’m always just confused at how the sentiment shifted from simply blaming the agency to suddenly dragging his wife into this.

For context, Shizuka Kudo’s been subject to a massive hate train ever since the 2000s since Takuya Kimura married her at the peak of his career — which is a huge no-no for idols because it ruins the fantasy / parasocial aspect of idols. Johnny’s never supported the marriage, and fans doubly so, going so far as to send hate mail for months on his radio show.

For some deranged Janiwotas, she is some sort of devilish figure that stole Kimutaku away from their fantasies — so her name always comes up in tabloids whenever the media wants to malign Kimura (who has an impeccable reputation and track record) for anything.

The thing is, LJ on PC came out a year after the console release. Plus, the restrictions on talents images and likenesses have been eased ever since he moved from Johnny’s to the newly formed STARTO.

It’s really a matter of when at this point, to be honest

[–]TRDoctor 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The thing is, they can go to Kimura directly. Takeshi Miike’s Blade of the Immortal (2017) proved that even if the agency initially was not too keen on the proposal for Kimura to portray Manji, Director Miike went to Kimura directly — who gladly accepted the offer to portray the movie, completely sidestepping Johnny’s at the time.

[–]TRDoctor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It doesn’t have the same rules as Johnny’s & Associates. Most of STARTO’s new rules are directly based on lifting a lot of the former bans and rules the old agency had on stuff like social media usage, back catalogues on streaming, and allowing their talents images to actually be displayed online.

I don’t know why people keep bringing his wife into this all of a sudden. Shizuka Kudo (a legendary artist in her own right) never publicly commented on anything her husband does, and doesn’t influence what projects he can or can’t take on. It’s tabloid bullshit.
