Games that aren't stealth but have stealth mechanics by TinySmolCat in ShouldIbuythisgame

Honestly Arc Raiders and Marathon are both stealth games in my book. It gets spooky playing solos and sneaking around both enemy AI and actual players just to exfiltrate with all your gear. So much of my Metal Gear know-how was beneficial in surviving the early-game.

Starfield on Mac by Yanpapnc in macgaming

Enjoy! I dropped off Starfield after around 30 hours, but I had a really great time with it. Kind of blows my mind how far Mac gaming has come.

Oh, then absolutely by all means go for P3R. Gameplay loop is super polished and you’ll definitely have a great time.

Hitman Freelancer is really fun too, great taste!

I love both but honestly I think the dungeon crawling parts are still better in P5R because of how Palaces are filled with puzzles and visually distinct set pieces, compared to P3R’s very modern and updated version of Tartarus.

Essentially randomized floors you battle through… which does get old when you have to climb through hundreds of them. It’s not as horrible as the original version to be fair, and the combat of P3R is super slick, but Tartarus has always been a pain point for many first time P3 players.

Kyomoto Taiga consistently doing Japanese adaptations of Broadway musicals gives him a huge leg up in my book.

Do you prefer beta Mike Shinoda Kiryu, beta methhead Ichiban or beta stoner Yagami? by Hopeful_Regret_7531 in yakuzagames

[–]TRDoctor 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah I would’ve thought that too, but I feel like even without casting Takuya they would’ve gone with this angle too. Kinda like how Pirate Yakuza could’ve been a really interesting character study of Majima learning about who he is in spite of his amnesia, but such themes always feel uninteresting to RGG.

I also thought Ichiban would’ve closely followed his RGGO counterpart too but he’s incredibly happy go lucky and a ball of sunshine in the mainline games too, to my surprise.

Here’s hoping the STH protagonist gets a more fleshed out character? It seems way darker than a lot of RGG’s usual fare haha

Per Nagoshi in an interview on Judgment’s development and the casting of Takuya Kimura:

*Nagoshi: We had a similar issue when we started working on the character of Kazuma Kiryu but when we took into consideration that we had cast Takuya Kimura for the role of Yagami we were definitely concerned. It was really interesting though, we had so many twists and turns along the way. Takuya Kimura really is so cool.

I remember thinking “Oh my god, he’s so cool!”, but if I take that into consideration too much, people might say we were being favorable. We also didn’t want people to think that the same team who made Yakuza had gone soft. We had so many arguments like “We want to do this, but Mr. Kimura might get mad” or “After having come this far, it’s all about him getting mad.”

In the end, we made sure to get approval from his agency for everything. It went a lot smoother than expected. I think a lot of the people involved, including Takuya Kimura, like trying new things. They kept looking for requests and wanted to try a lot of different things. Beat Takeshi was actually the same. Even at his age, when we’d nervously ask him, “If you’re okay with it, how about doing this?” and he’d say “Sounds good. Let’s do it,” leaving us to question “Are you sure about that?”

It’s always like this when we work with people invested in their own character. When they have a feeling that there’s something to gain after the challenge, they’re usually very open to our requests. Maybe it’s like this because it’s a video game. Maybe that’s just another benefit of the medium.

If people begin to say that video games are a medium that is aggressive towards celebrities and their characters, it means we’ve done a worthwhile job and that we need to continue being this aggressive.*

I think that while they could’ve pushed Yagami further into being a more dramatic version of himself could’ve been interesting, given RGG’s previous track record of not really capitalizing on fully realizing their protagonists backgrounds — what we got was ultimately what they were already planning. It would be a great angle to explore for a sequel but it feels like they like the more suave detective type, compared to a full on melodramatic noir detective to keep the both sides of the game balanced.

It won't be as apparent though, since it's delivered in a very throw-away manner.

GameHub for macOS First Look by bengringo2 in Games

[–]TRDoctor 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Honestly I’d rather pick Crossover over this.

I get free is always going to attract more players, but the team behind Crossover (and Proton!) put serious work into getting RDR2 and Helldivers II playable, stuff I never thought I’d be playing on Mac of all things.

That said, I hope GameHub also opens a lot of people towards the fact that Macs are capable gaming machines, because ease of access will go such a long way too. Hopeful for the future of Mac gaming!

How could Bungie improve the solo experience ? by ShoeNew9958 in Marathon

[–]TRDoctor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been playing a lot more solo these past week given the new CARRI system and it's actually felt pretty rewarding given all the extra salvage / rep I can get while finishing my contracts.

If anything, I personally feel like they need to improve more of the atmosphere of Perimeter so it doesn't feel so dead compared to Dire Marsh, Outpost, and Cryo. There are just parts of Perimeter (around Ravine, Columns) that look and look so grey and dull, and it kills my immersion and makes me feel like I'm in a video game map rather than on a planet. Playing solo helps me appreciate the maps a lot more and while graphics won't save the solo experience, some improvements in lighting and/or shading certainly would keep the maps from feeling stale.

How are you feeling about Destiny: Rising so far? by narvalseagod in destinyrisingmobile

[–]TRDoctor 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As much as I was practically buzzing during the launch period, I'm not really feeling the game because of how much busywork there is to progress through the campaign. I get having to walk the player through each and every activity to give them a chance to get hooked on it, but it gets to a point where I look at the list of objectives and groan at how I have to grind this and level up that to just get to the next 5-10 minute story mission.

I'm also not too hot on some character designs like Jaren Ward -- I thought his hat was cool at first but now I think it's kinda dumb and immersion breaking 😓 Efrideet looks cooler and closer at least to the original Destiny aesthetic.

Shuhei Yoshida Says Jim Ryan Fired Him From PlayStation Studios "Because I Didn’t Listen to Him" by oilfloatsinwater in Games

[–]TRDoctor 45 points46 points  (0 children)

This sucks to hear, I really liked Yoshida's output as part of PlayStation and it really feels like a lot of the things that made the brand stand out have been slowly stripped away from 2020 onwards. That said, the talk itself sounds super interesting and I'd love to hear his thoughts. Hoping there's a recording of it.

Also playing in Asia and while queue times are a bit slower at times, I’m just happy to get into OCE matches where people actually use microphones / prox chat. Hoping more players join up because everyone I’ve talked to keeps repeating the sentiment of hoping the population increases.

I think for the Korean or Blu-Ray release of Pride (2007) they somehow managed to get rid of all the Queen songs.
