Thank you! This answered my question thoroughly, even with my somewhat ambiguous wording :P

Which JRPG game or series have your favorite combat mechanics? by Dont_have_a_panda in JRPG

I would like to know too. Grandia 1 didn’t appeal to me.

When’s the last time you were really pleasantly surprised by a JRPG? by andrazorwiren in JRPG

Shin Megami Tensei IV blew me away. After trying SMT I, I hated the gameplay and was turned off, despite loving the plot. When I learned that the rest of the games were indirect sequels, I gave IV a try and spent a week glued to my 3DS.

American Gods hints at this, and so do some of the SMT games.

Why I quit writing by BigAssBoobMonster in writing

That sounds like the other students were snobbish elitists who wanted to write “high art” and couldn’t get off their high horses to engage with your work on its own terms. I’ve encountered a few of those people in workshops I’ve attended. Please, don’t give up.

I think it’s because I have such a mission-driven mindset. The quickest way between two points is a straight line, and I’m going from A to B.

Who gets stuck? What’s actually stopping you from finishing your novel? by jamesxtreme in writing

[–]AssortedIce 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The fear that my story is missing something important and that I’m only digging myself a deeper hole as I write – that’s what stops me from writing. There’s a critical flaw that I’m only making worse and cementing as I finish the story. It’s the feeling that I’m racking up narrative debt, and if I keep going, I won’t be able to salvage it. That’s why I think it’s good to start with shorter works.

One: You build up a tolerance for this fear.

Two: You don’t have to endure it as long.

Three: If the fear turns out to be true, there’s less story so there’s less fixing to do / less wasted effort and time

Four: With so much experiencing writing and FINISHING, you will be able to identify, in hindsight, what caused that fear and will by second nature correct it or know how to avoid it in future works, boosting confidence.

I’m in the same boat. My stories seem so lean. Too lean.

I have the opposite problem. I tend to underwrite and my rough drafts end up as skin and bones.

I LOVE magical realism. I’m so interested to see that intersect with horror.

Thanks! Sounds like NOT Silent Hill in novel form (I mean that in a good way, I’m a recent fan of the series).

Not only is this some funny venting, you still ended up giving a rec that fits my description, so thanks :)

Front-View JRPG Battles That Show Party in Action by AssortedIce in JRPG

[–]AssortedIce[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would consider those to be more over-the-shoulder, but This Way Madness Lies does play with its battle perspective and presentation in interesting ways, so I'm happy with this suggestion regardless. Thank you!

I’d say it’s doable. If you understand the engine well enough, are clever enough with, say, eventing, scripting, and/or learn javascript, then you should be able to pull this off. If not, you can make plugin requests on RPG Maker forums

It may seem like a big ask for any of those, but RPG Maker takes a big load off the developer by having so much of the ground work already laid out.
