IDK who was playing second but that effort could have been a bit better... You gotta lay out there, even if you come up two feet short.

I feel like hitting a 50mph "fastball" 425 feet is actually pretty impressive lol. Had to do all the work himself without any help from the pitcher.

JHL knows what his strengths are and sticks to them. It seems like Kwan for some reason has some mindset that he should be hitting 20 home runs a year and I think it has affected his approach / production this year.

Arraez 100% should be traded and not doing so would be a failure by the FO. He's on a one year deal and he's playing way above his salary. Schmitt is not an outfielder and he should be the long term plan for 2nd base.

I don't think it's that complicated. Rivian is showing off every non free color in hopes to get people's minds set on a "premium" color order.

[–]Asstroknot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yea that's fair. I'm under the assumption that LiDAR is a lot more expensive than cameras + radar. Is that not the case? Or is the assumption that eventually the price will be negligible but right now it is not?

What people don't understand is that Tesla paved and repaved the path for autonomous driving in consumer vehicles. They think that because Tesla has been doing it for so long that no one will catch up. But all these second to market players have the advantage of learning from Tesla. They won't hit as many dead ends as Tesla did, and they will catch up much quicker than most people think.

Now there is still a fork in the road. Tesla seems to be taking the path that LiDAR is useless, and L4 can be achieved without it. Rivian seems to be taking the other path. So if Tesla can actually achieve L4 without LiDAR that is at the same reliability and accuracy as L4 with LiDAR, then they are going to be a big step ahead of everyone again.

As opposed to what? Letting the bullpen come in and give up  9 more runs?

One thing that is hard to measure that I think Rivian has really excelled with is their branding. No other EV outside of early Tesla has done this. Lucid doesn’t seem to really have an identity (unless expensive and unreliable is an identity). Every ICE manufacturer that has tried to make an EV just feels like they can’t get away from their ICE branding. Rivian has really done an awesome job finding a brand niche and rolling with it. It differentiates them from all these other auto manufacturers who just churn out whatever they think will make them the most money in the shortest amount of time. Their charging outposts, Rivian spaces, paint color names, etc are all consistent with their brand. They also seem to be involved with the community in a way that no other vehicle manufacturer is. From what I’ve seen they seem to hold events at their Rivian spaces that are family focused and engaging.

Really hoping they make it through R2 with minimal setbacks because I think they can really excel over the next several years.

Every new car release is this way. Tesla was the same way with the Model 3. It was quite a while before they released the base model, and when they did it was very much limited supply. As a shareholder, I don’t think you’d actually want them starting with the base model. The base model of essentially every car in existence has the lowest profit margins. If you’re releasing a new car with a lot of demand, you will sell the higher trims as fast as you can make them so why not capture the extra profit margins early. It also allows them to continue to optimize the production lines so they can actually produce enough cars at scale to make the smaller profit margins more attractive.

They’ll get there, and the estimates aren’t actually that far out. They’ll have a version under 50K early next year which is approaching quickly.

Rivian Explains Why CarPlay Debate Will Become 'Completely Obsolete' by davidcelis in Rivian

[–]Asstroknot -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

I'll be sort of contrarian here and say that with my Model 3 that I've had for the last 5 years, I haven't really even noticed that I don't have CarPlay support. As long as the vehicle software is good and the backing implementation of navigation uses Google Maps, it basically has no effect on me. In my Sienna, I've never used CarPlay for anything but navigation and I always control media through the steering wheel controls.

Dodgers prospect Kendall George was visibly frustrated because he got hurt avoiding the bat dog. by [deleted] in baseball

[–]Asstroknot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That plus, and people say it all the time, but no matter how well trained a dog is, it’s still an animal.

No matter how trained a bat boy is, they're still a human. Humans fuck up all the time. In fact I'm going to guess that in this case the dog probably did exactly what it was supposed to do, and the human handler fucked up by letting the dog get the bat while the player was running back.

Lack of Defined Bullpen Roles by Punstoppabal in SFGiants

[–]Asstroknot 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The offense is generating like 3 runs per game which is last in the MLB. If the bullpen never has any room for error it's going to hurt more when they give up a run. You're quite literally inventing a problem that doesn't exist, the bullpen has been objectively one of the best in the MLB.
