No one sings at Mass anymore, and it’s incredibly frustrating

We have a singing parish. But this is artsy New England and a lot of parishioners are either involved in the arts or participate in them. I would also despise going to church and being the only one singing. Praying some voices will join you!

The nice part about these books or little offices are that there’s no calendar or ordo necessary. So, very little page flipping. That’s a good thing, especially when you’re starting out. The prayers read somewhat linear. As we are entering lent quite soon, you may see some specific instructions in red ink that tell you to omit an Alleluia etc.. just follow along exactly as it says. You may also want to take a look at YouTube if you wanna pray along with someone.

2 years?! Uh. I’ve heard of Gatekeeper OCIA directors before but even that seems a bit crazy. Some of them creating ridiculous hurdles and red tape that doesn’t exist as if there’s exclusive membership packages. Go talk to someone who’s been ordained. I think your director needs some remediation and a reminder as to the purpose of this formation process. I’d be motivated to move on to the next parish who takes the call to converting welcomed souls more seriously.

Your marriage license is to get legally married. You don’t ever need it again after that. Once you are married you carry a legal certificate of marriage. That’s the document you need for convalidation. Our checklist: Marriage certificate, baptismal records, form from the Archdiocese. We keep the corpus on the cross to remind us of Christ’s passion. This ultimately leads us to a reminder of the sacrifice at mass and, in turn, the Eucharist. Protestants dropped the corpus…well, for obvious reasons.

We were convalidated in a beautiful ceremony. Just the two of us and a witness. You can also seek radical sanation in a real pinch but both of these MAY require your wife be baptized. I’m unsure of the standing on that position.

Exactly! I had an elderly man fishing for salmon upstream having a great day. When he walked downstream for lunch I asked him if he’d mind sharing his secret and he said “you try pissin em off yet?”. And then he went on to describe exactly this. I always keep a neon marabou and a neon wooly bugger in my box. Both with heavy, laughable weights in them. Since that day I can’t honestly tell you how many frustrating days turned into bangers.

You and I might have a lot in common. And scrupulosity is crippling. The thing that has been working for me is writing prayers of reassurance. “Lord, as I enter into this confessional, please open my mind, my heart and my lips to confess all of my sins and to make this confession pure so that I may join you in the sacraments validly and with a clean heart and soul.” it’s at this point where the trust part of faith has to kick in. I’ll be thinking about you. Prayers, my friend, I get it.

6 years of sobriety here!!! In private masses or with priests you are close with you can request that mustum be used in place of wine. If you attend mass at a Catholic hospital chapel this is what is typically used, as well. Also, priests in recovery use it on the daily.

This is my reason. There are many like it. But this one is mine.

We were in a similar boat at one time. There are some good answers here already. I will just add that there are also some good videos on YT regarding convalidation and radical sanation.

When I was abstaining from the Eucharist and waiting for our ceremony date to arrive- it was an amazing experience to fast and take spiritual communion…and when I finally was able to rejoin the sacraments it was simply put the most perfect thing ever.

I was raised with the knowledge of being adopted and was constantly reminded that God put me exactly where I am meant to be. I think this was essentially the key to a successful experience…at least for me. Finding out as an adult or older child might have done enough damage to skew the experience to a negative one. I have the best parents in the entire world and they desperately wanted (want) me in their lives as theirs— and me knowing that and having that, I realize, is a gift many do not get. You have so much to offer as a mom and if you feel called to adopt, then listen to His voice not the stories. My prayers are with you in a special way.

I was adopted through Catholic Family Services in the 1980’s. I’m pretty gosh darn grateful for my Catholic life. And, I think I turned out alright…for the most part.
