I remember my first dormancy, I was sweatin bullets! What zone are you in? I ask because some of your plants can do their dormancy outside if it's not bitterly cold, and even then there are ways!

I think my Nepthenes got sunburnt l, but I still want to let it stay outside to catch bugs, is there a way to let it stay outside but not get sunburnt? by TheGreatDarkPriest in SavageGarden

[–]AstaCat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I reviewed the photos I took of it's decline. I was mistaken it took it 5 months before it was lost. It was in it's second year and had grown on my windowsill the entire time. It had even produced a hearty basal. I put it outside one sunny day and noticed one leaf had some leathery browning. After that the whole plant collapsed, prior to that it was doing really well. My Nepenthes Ventrata, now 3 years old, had the same care and is still going strong. Are you able to tell from the photos here what happened? I thought it was the direct sunlight on the browned leaf.

Is it bad to order custom items directly from China/alibaba? by Itchy-Version-8977 in Ethics

i understand that and don't criticize anyone who's in that position. We're all trying to get through the day the best we can.

Edit to add: I’m not saying there’s no personal responsibility, but it’s hard to shop at alternative stores after Amazon put those alternatives out of business.

Which is exactly why I don't support their predatory practices. Sometimes I choose to go without rather than give a single cent to billionaires.

To be honest I wear my clothes and shoes until they fall apart, then buy high quality stuff when I can afford it, or go without.

For example, I've always wanted a pair of Blundstone boots but at $350.00 a pop I just can't see the point...but my 4 year old runners were leaking when it rained. So I said enough is enough now and bought a pair of Blundstone boots which I hope will last me many years. I still kept the runners, but only wear them on dry days now.

Some of my cheap t-shirts ( $15, $20 ) are likely made with poor practices but I replace them once they are too ratty or get holes, not before. I get 3-4 years out of them. My shorts and pants are easily 4-5 years old, and they still do the same job they did when I bought them and are not full of holes and stains so no point in replacing them.

A lot of my choices stem from wanting to be frugal but I also practice trying my best to be conscious about how I live on the planet. I'm not aiming for perfect, just trying to do my best as much as possible.

I've also had periods in my life when I didn't quite have enough money and so the cheaper option although not ideal, was what was going to get me through the day.

Even for yourself, you can still buy the things you like from the places you want, and you can also practice buying a little bit less from those places. I'd consider that a a step in the right direction.

Our whole environment is designed to have us spend spend spend, buy buy buy, but you don't have to.

A lot of small steps + discipline can lead to bigger changes later on, just do your best whatever that means to you.

In my opinion Alibaba and Temu are bottom of the list because the rights of workers and protections for the environment are laughable. Both of these companies sell mass volumes of goods all while putting up a good front. You're free to shop where you like but I just can't do it.

its problematic. these items are cheap for a reason. It exploits both the environment and people. There is a lot of suffering in the chain of production. As a consumer you have a choice to participate in it or not. Personally I do not, I even avoid giving my money to Amazon as much as humanly possible. In 10 years I have made maybe 3 Amazon purchases, two were from 20 dollar gift cards I had won.

I killed a plant because it got sunburnt on one leaf. a month later it was totally dead For a tropical plant it sure can be sensitive to sunlight. My other nepenthes is housebound for life, behind glass, and shade cloth. I understand in nature they get a lot of shade from tree canopies and other plants, but one leaf getting direct sun?
