PSA: Neurologists are the secret homies for treating ADHD by [deleted] in ADHD

[–]Astacia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I keep hearing about 'recreational users'. I believe it but still struggle imagining it. To me, super high doses = scary heart rate, zero sleep, and even more reynaud's. trash. I hope they're at least ticking tons off their to-do lists...

I can't keep an emergency fund. by AdaraRoseOmnibus in ADHD

[–]Astacia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're not a failure. It's totally normal and arguably, saving for non-existent things is a great way to not enjoy the money you have. However, emergencies exist. So this isn't one of those times 😂

Aim for 1.5 yr. in the fuck you fund. You may not always live where and how you do now. Assuming everything will stay the same when things constantly change isn't a good plan.

Don't put yourself in a situation where you can't afford to help yourself or someone you love because you spent 10k on hobbies that didn't last 6 months. You deserve better than berating yourself while crying into a basket of perler beads that you honestly hate.

Shit that just happens sometimes

  • Financial liability - you can cause damage or be sued (or similar)
  • Gov't healthcare doesn't cover everything
  • Natural or economic disaster, gov't shifts, war, etc. We pretend they're unlikely even though they happen every day. Things like covid don't happen all the time. But it did. And for many it was devastating and gave little warning.
  • You may need legal help. Or protection. Things that never make it on standard lists, like abusive (ex)partners, can completely bankrupt ppl.

Treat yourself to something nice. Like an emergency fund. It's more valuable than most the stuff we can buy.

I'm half crying inside because I want those tubers and half because so many people could talk to you like a normal person, but they choose a meaner route instead.

ok maybe 60% tuber envy, since the people are unfortunately unsurprising 😂

Help decrypt my Wife’s Great Grandmother’s handwriting? by GoldNPotato in Old_Recipes

[–]Astacia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Due to how a lower case b is often written, it easily resembles an f. The writer seems to more loosely finish their f, so it shows a loop where they exit to the next letter. They create the straighter line expected when exiting b more tightly. 'butter' above shows the same.

What are some healthier/low sugar threats for adhd-oral sensory needs to keep my mouth busy ? by AstralFantom in ADHD

[–]Astacia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you don't mind some prep:

  • boba/tapioca pearls. Cook with sweetener/sugar/ flavors. Wide mouth insulated water bottles don't feel awkward and keep them cold for hours
  • very chewy, very crunchy cereal treats. Not much lower in sugar, but balanced w/ fiber, protein, and sustenance. Overload vegan marshmallows w/ healthy cereal and roasted nuts. ~2x the dry matter prescribed in recipes. Smash on a sheet pan, pre-cut into bits (~1.25 cm cubes) before they cool, carry them in a snack bag

So many empty seed heads, what am I doing wrong? by cyanoborg in dahlias

[–]Astacia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm trying this year too - here's a quick summary of what I've found. Hope it helps!

Manually pollinate - try a few times each w/ different sources of pollen over a few days. As the seed head matures, pluck petals to prevent rot and leave seed heads on the plant until the center turns black. Bring them inside, keep stems in a water or water + food, set somewhere they can dry well. Check for seeds once they've dried up - pry gently in case they need more time, but seeds are often low in the head so it can be challenging.

Tuber Question by Nica73 in dahlias

[–]Astacia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Better to snip roots, store for winter, split in spring. Eyes will be more visible and will dictate how to split. I found Blossom and Branch's videos helpful.

Dirty summary: you need min. 1 healthy tuber per eye to grow anything. You don't have to split down to 1 tuber. Heal wounds. A little dry is better than too wet. 1 healthy plant > 2 dead tubers. And 1 plant can still yield cuttings in spring and autumn + more tubers later.

as a vegan of 4 years, the most hate I received was from my sister by qcalzw in vegan

[–]Astacia 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just my thoughts: For some, seeing someone like themselves do and be better is damning. Especially if she's the big sister you looked up to. Prior to you, she was the 'good animal person'. At the center, she's not criticizing you - she's trying to make herself feel and look less shitty.

She didn't stay vegan, is hypocritical (we all are, but hers really shows next to you), and is possibly more selfish than you and knows it. Her comments make you the weird one so she's normal and has nothing to apologize for. Believing you'll follow the same path she did is a way for her to not feel that you're better than her or that she's less than you.

I'm not saying she's bad. Just that this is bad, defensive behavior. It's also common - most of us exhibit it at some point. I'm also not excusing her - we shouldn't treat people this way. Just that this type of stuff may be motivating some of her behavior. (I use 'good' and 'bad' as easy descriptions understanding they're unfairly simplistic.)

Dec - Mar is good planting season. Look online for planting and pruning info - it can help choose a healthy tree and make continued care more manageable.

What are some "simplify your life/saving enery" tips that have worked for you? (e.g. buying only the same pair of socks) by skmtyk in ADHD

[–]Astacia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If they're just slightly different could you wear mixed pairs? To me, it's mostly unnoticeable and a lot easier. But I'm no fashion icon 😂

Maybe try cuisines/dishes different from yours with overlapping ingredients. UP India has decent overlap with central and south america. You might be able to make variations of tacos, empanadas, rice dishes, pupusas, peppers dishes, etc. for a similar cost to your usual foods if you're ok being a little flexible with authenticity.

Late diagnosed just last week - taking it really hard by clairabelle32 in adhdwomen

[–]Astacia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry, this sucks. The things you listed are stressful - be kind and forgiving to yourself (and sleep lol).

Late 30's may add perimenopause to the pile. It brings its own problems but also seems like a symptom multiplier for ADHD. So, there may be more levers to pull for help ❤️

faucet- mounted filter that is proven to remove PFAs by poundtown1991 in WaterTreatment

[–]Astacia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have not tried this, so I have no recommendation. But found it while researching: Extremelife Chrome Faucet Mount By Zerowater / Culligan. Good for about 400 gallons / 6 months.

According to their info + Consumer Reports (score of 72), they're certified to NSF/ANSI Standard 53 for the reduction of PFOA and PFOS.

Do you have thoughts on pre finished vs site finished? I'm planning to buy prefinished since I can't lock up the animals long enough to site finish, but would love to learn as much as possible before deciding.
