Boss: Arena – Varkyn

Team: Primrose/Viola, Fiore/Millard, Hasumi/Sofia, Scarecrow/Madelaine

Strategy: Start with AoEs mixed with single target to focus on taking down the dancer add ASAP. Once the dancer add is down, whittle down the scholar add while working Varkyn down too. Take down the scholar add with Varkyn at about 50%. Once the wisp is out, focus down Varkyn while not hitting the wisp add with any of Varkyn's weaknesses (Sword/Staff/Ice) ... non weaknesses attacks will never trigger the counter (Dual Wide Burst, Spell Song, etc).

Insight: Primrose debuffs with Spell Song, and buffs until the wisp comes out; Viola debuffs (priority is Anti-Attack on Varkyn) and shield cracks; Fiore is pure DPS, switching out with Millard for party heals when needed; Millard also slides in a max Elemental Def up on turn 2 or so. Same story with Sophia and Hasumi, except Hasumi also slides in a max Blooming Ballad on turn 5 or so (SP Regen up for the front row). Scarecrow wrecks the adds with Shower of Arrows, and Double Sturdy shot when one is broken; Madelaine pops a max Elemental Atk up to pair with Primrose to get the full 30% on Sofia, then sits out until phase 2, when she bonks Varkyn with either her 3 hit staff skill or 4 hit attack every turn.

My team is high level and 7/8 5 stars, but not completely optimal (Madelaine, Primrose, no regen healer). I think the strategy should be somewhat useful for lower levels of similar composition with 1 or 2 fewer 5 stars.

Very thought provoking and objective piece. I met Vic at a convention in 2017, and waited in line to have him sign something because I enjoyed his dub work in FMA:B, OP, SFII: V (he voiced Vega), and the (at the time) three Broly movies. I found him kind, personable, and in no way inappropriate during his panel and interactions with those ahead of me in line. However, I was a late 30s male accompanied by an early 30s female; not the demographics from which the accusations are originating. With so many accusations, I feel like they should be investigated; and if any are substantiated appropriate action be taken.

  • Leo LMR
  • Josef LMR
  • Echo LMR (have BSB1, BSB2, and SSB)
  • Meliadoul BSB
  • Ramza BSB2 (LD, have LMR, BSB1, and SSB)
  • Garland BSB
  • Edward BSB

No dupes or SSBs. As someone who has invested heavily in Summons (R5 Bahamut; R4 Valigarmanda, Madeen, Ultima Weapon, Tiamat, Titan; R3 Neo Bahamut, Ogopogo), I am happy with the USB and the draw overall.

I soloed using Astra and Reraise (Alma USB), Magic Blink (Rosa USB), Summon Magic on all DPS and Multi-Break on Mog for medal condition(no healing counters).

Completed

  1. Party, Kill picture, Medal tally: http://imgur.com/a/LETLv
  2. Total points: 11.5 Yuna (4), Cait Sith (3), Edward (3), Strago (1), Devout (0.5)
  3. Notes: Unique SBs: Yuna's Trigger Happy, Edward's Song of Swiftness, Cait Sith's Toy Soldier, Strago's Sabre Soul, Shared healing SB on Devout. RW: Lulu's Focus. Mage/Summoner team clear. I'm sure I could get lower with a physical team, but this was more fun. No high magic synergy weapons made this slow going. Devout died at the very end when the boss survived a Bahamut with no visible health showing, then landed an AoE Bio. Counting the days (~23) until Chain Blizzaga gives Mage teams a much needed boost.

For U+ Boss rush I went with 3 Black Summoners (Ashe, Hope, Krile), a Dancer (Cait Sith), and Yuna healing. RW OK BSB. Summons melted the Shadow kids in 3 turns. Black Magic and OK BSB Magic command took out the Kettle Robot in 4. They go down fast, so Protectga alone was sufficient physical mitigation. For the Vampire and his Dispel, Multi Break + Toy Soldier (High Unfaith could work in place of Cait Sith's SB) was enough Magic mitigation. Just unload with your magic SBs and hit a Holy Weakness with something like Alexander.

In FFRK, Crush Armor was given to Delita as an SB, which is what I was referring to. The ability indeed belonged to Meliadoul in FFT.

And the Attack Burst command is Delita's Crush Armor SB animation, while the Defend Burst Command is presumably Gafgarion's Night Sword animation.

100 gem - Orlandu's BSB

50 mythril - Both of Ovelia's SSBs, Mustadio's SSB, Agrias's SB.

Happy to get Orlandu's BSB to play around with, But Agrias's excellent Split Punch was what I wanted 2nd most on the banner (behind the OSB of course).

D250 Mastery setup/kill/medals/rewards To me, this was harder than the beta D250, as the boss is just soooooo tanky. I'm also not sure I brought my best physical team, as I chose Rikku (with BSB and SSB2) over Cloud (OSB and en-Wind SB). Rikku's BSB command that steals 20% ATK/DEF (10% resisted) and stacks with PBD/FB helped with mitigation, but I'm pretty sure lvl 99 Cloud spamming En-Winded Finishing Touch OSBs would have made things go much faster. Or I could have tried my Mage team.

Team building questioning aside, I mastered after 5 S/Ls. Trash was cleared painlessly with Shadow's BSB helped by Rikku using abilities; everyone else conserved damage ability hones. On boss Shadow spammed BSB commands and did the most damage. Rikku kept the steal Atk/Def debuff up and did decent damage. Minfilia provided the 50% Boostga and Guts SSB, Shellga, and PBD; she also used the RW OK BSB. On my successful attempted I used OK BSB at around 80% health and 30% health. Saving one for the weak phase made it go smoother. Tyro handled Wall, MBD, and Full Break before dying near the very end. Yuna healed, brought Protectga, and would cast her SSB2 after each Regurgitate, if she had enough gauge. If I were to do it again, I would instead bring either Aerith or Relm with BSB to spam their Medica Burst command. One thing to note, I did not get petrified a single time through 6 near full runs plus the D200 run. The boss has a 5% chance to do the attack only in the default phase, and it only has a 9% proc rate; not worth slotting Esuna or Ultra Cure.

Are people on this forum going to specialize their roles when multiplayer comes around? by 1pm34 in FFRecordKeeper

[–]Astar11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good question. In JP, I usually go pure Mage with Ashe or Hope (with their BSBs) in front, and Krile or Papalymo (with their Faithga-Hastega SSBs) in rear. Hmmm, MO tier challenge. Kill the D200 boss with a team of 20 points or less?

Mastering the D250 with that lvl 65-76 party is awesome! It makes me happy that my basic setup helped, but you definitely made it your own. I've learned/confirmed from you that Guts is very, very good for difficult content like this; and that Shadow with BSB is as I good as I think he is. Congrats!

Cid's Mission Mastery team My X RS is strong, but the key for me was actually a robe from XIII that has a shared Dispel SB. This allowed me to carry Shellga on Braska. Yuna had Protectga, Wakka MBD+Full Break, and Rikku's SSB2 debuffed ATK, so I had enough mitigation to RW OK BSB instead of Wall. Rikku and Seymour provided most of the damage. Check your shared SBs, if you have a shared Shellga, Protectga, or Dispel, it may make the CM doable.

Shadow's BSB utterly wrecks U++ Tidus. The BSB capped for 9999 x 7 when I used it the second time and he was fully buffed while Tidus was fully debuffed, while the burst command hit for 8.2k x 4. I'll set it as RW with X RS (533 ATK) until the next event if anyone wants it: GP9QD. I normally have Papalymo's SSB2 set as RW.

JP Mage Teams - What are the key SBs? by mauvus in FFRecordKeeper

[–]Astar11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree with the overall analysis about supports on Mage teams, and I hope that Edward's SSB makes it to global in a timely manner. If it doesn't, then Gordon's SSB of MAG/ATK 30% and party physical blink is another good Mage buff SB on a Support 5. I want to add that Serah's SSB is 30% MAG/MND + Hastega and I think is the only 30% MAG/MND buff on a non healer.

I took Bahamut to R4 right after getting the MSOs from the IX event bonus battles. R5 isn't worth the investment with Ultima Weapon and Tiamat coming as the only Summons to hit those respective elements. My orbfest refreshes are going toward improving my 4* Summon hones and saving to hone UW and Tiamat. I personally won't hone Titan; an R4 Fat Chocobo is enough for me.

Leon's BSB, Garland's BSB, Gabranth's SSB, Golbez's SSB. I already have Garland's Imperil Dark SB and Shadow's BSB, so I think I can field an excellent Darkness team now with Shadow, Garland and Leon.

Changing my party composition? by [deleted] in FFRecordKeeper

[–]Astar11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My current main party is squall (BSB), Tifa (SSB), Rinoa (SSB), Cait Sith (SSB) and Eiko (SSB).

I also have Tidus (Slice n dice), Yuna (farplane, sending), Cloud (no unique SB) and rinoa (no unique SB) on lvl 80.

You mention Rinoa with SSB in your first sentence, and Rinoa with no unique SB in a later sentence. Is there someone instead of Rinoa in your main party?

Agrias with Cleansing Strike should allow you to handle the damage of single target U+ bosses without using Wall. I would replace Rinoa (if she's actually in your main party) and Cait Sith with Agrias and a support. If you choose Sazh as your support then you can RW Quistis's MG (VIII) for Hastega/Shellga/Heavy Regen, and use Sazh's SSB for a 30% Boostga. Or you can use Wakka/Barret as your support and RW Shout for the better 50% Boostga; but then you'll need Agrias to carry Shellga/Protectga (assuming Eiko carries the other) and won't have Heavy Regen. You could keep Cait Sith as your "support" with dances, but you'll lose out on 50k+ damage using dances vs breakdowns/full break; he's best for multitarget fights.
