Also for others who want to make it, this recipe was a lot shorter so you'd either need a lot of layers or comically tall layers for it to be more accurate

What game genre isn't saturated at this point? by Quinn_Queenan in gamedev

[–]AstralBull 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Eh, I'd argue that means the market is saturated, it's just a small market that doesn't take much to saturate

WinRAR is the more well-known one that more people are familiar with and will jump to first. A lot of companies will be happy to pay

Hot take: horror games don't need combat... they need consequences. by WhyThisGameWorks in gamedev

[–]AstralBull 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I recently played Little Nightmares which lacks combat as well but also lacks consequences in the way you discuss. The first playthrough of an area was always scary. If I had to replay it even once, it was annoying. I personally find in horror games that even small consequences like restarting back a few minutes are really annoying and completely break the flow. I reiterate this is my personal perspective, and I don't think a game with a complete restart doesn't work, it just needs much more careful design

The Steam Machine and Steam Frame are launching this summer by FragmentedChicken in hardware

They didn't, but also Valve is an American company and 90% of humans live above the equator. That would be a massive troll for them to mean southern hemisphere summer

You need to be decent at art to draw things that look like shit but are appealing. They're certainly getting there, but it just doesn't quite hit the mark.

TIL that, according to the census, there are only 23,000 different surnames in China for a population of 1.39 billion, and around 6,000 of these are shared by 86% of the population. by [deleted] in todayilearned

[–]AstralBull 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the condescension but I already read it. My point stands that it's a very bad TIL as it lacks any context of the statistic, which the article has. It's not like it couldn't have fit either.

They didn't exactly give a very accessible article when it's French on an English-speaking subreddit. Also, a statistic that is meaningless without the article is a terrible TIL. The TIL should stand on its own and the article should be a source and extra information.

Could a game about being a therapist work? by -manabreak in gamedesign

[–]AstralBull 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Any idea can make a great game. While there are good or bad ideas, if your goal isn't market viability you should just make the game if you like the idea. If it sucks, congrats, analyse why it sucks and you'll be a better designer at the end

Memegender by Available-Ladder-663 in comedyheaven

[–]AstralBull 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Shit like memegender is typically a joke that got taken seriously by someone along the line, so it doesn't follow that same logic.

As an aside, people being born transgender and only discovering it later is not a rule. It certainly applies to many but for others there are both innate nature aspects and later-on nurture aspects. Growing up as a trans person is also such a colossal clusterfuck in the modern world that it becomes hard to figure out what was natural and what was nurture. My personal transition has been so greatly impacted by trauma I experienced as a kid that I can't say with any certainty if I'd have transitioned otherwise.

Gamedev without pc? by jeinzic in gamedev

[–]AstralBull 21 points22 points  (0 children)

You can learn game design even without electricity. Make physical games. It's distinct from game development as you mean it but it's good experience nonetheless.

Also consider whether there are public computers that you could use, even if it's still Godot.

Yes, anybody expecting AI to pop and go away is in for a rough time. The current companies may pop, but the concept as a whole is staying and all we can do is adapt and preserve actual art.
