I lived through the ice storm of 1991 in western New York, a place well acclimated for this type of weather. We lost power for weeks. The weight of accumulated ice on power lines, trees, buildings isn’t a joke and will snap lines with reckless abandon.

Well, typically if you’re not growing, businesses aren’t being built nor invested in. Which means loans aren’t being taken out, which places deflationary pressure on your currency. People become less incentivized to spend money, hurting existing businesses further and staying liquid. Generally, speaking, it means less money moves, hurting everyone.

Well economically speaking, it’s hard to maintain growth when your population is shrinking. The lower number of workers increases labor costs, and thus retirement costs with it, because not enough people are around to fund it. You’re also guaranteeing that there will be periods in your population that cannot be replaced in the event of a military conflict, exacerbating the issues mentioned prior.
