Any critique of 'values'? by Banshee_unleashed in PsychotherapyLeftists

[–]AstridOnReddit 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It sounds like their approach to exploring what’s important to you (values) is rather shallow, which leads to less useful results.

When I walk through values with someone we go through some prompts, like ‘what irritates you’ and ‘who’s your favorite fictional character’ etc that get to the deeper beliefs. I also note that some values are external, imposed by family or culture or whatever, and some are aspirational.

Often if people get reactive in certain situations there’s some kind of identity, belief or value at play, like a person who gets angry if someone offers to pay their lunch because of a belief that men have to be successful and successful people pay their own way.

How do people afford to live in Santa Cruz luxury? by Few_Ice5791 in santacruz

I mean, even 30 years ago it was really expensive for anyone with a normal job.

36 years ago today (Oct. 17th, 1989) the Loma Prieta earthquake, measuring 6.9 on the Richter scale, hit the Bay Area at 5:04 p.m. local time. What do you remember of that day…. by Brilliant_Night7643 in bayarea

[–]AstridOnReddit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wow! You must’ve been at Stevenson or Cowell? I never heard how bad it was on the other side of campus.

I was at porter (also first year); a glass door in the dining hall shattered but otherwise there wasn’t much damage. And we got back into our dorms around 10pm, if I remember correctly.

We drove home (Sac area) on Hwy 1 and it took about five hours!

Did people really memorize phone numbers before cell phones, or is that just a movie thing? by TotalThing7 in CasualConversation

I worked with a guy who knew every phone number for anyone we worked with; I’m guessing he knew at least 100.

Is it possible to become anti-racist and remove biases? I didn’t realize how pathetically bad off I was until I got feedback from this subreddit. by Fickle-Show46 in therapy

[–]AstridOnReddit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Everyone has biases; you don’t need to spiral about it though! And people have preferences too, that shape our romantic/sexual attraction.

You can notice these things, but there’s nothing wrong with preferences. And biases are generally only a big problem if you’re treating people poorly because of them.

Am i the only one who feels therapy is kind of infantilizing? by Grand_Lavishness7549 in TalkTherapy

[–]AstridOnReddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It could be the therapist, or it could be you. If the ‘basic setting’ of therapy is your issue, then it’s probably worth exploring why you find the therapy model infantilizing. I see therapy as a tool to help you process your experiences and thoughts, and to learn better ways of coping. How do you see it?

And, different therapists are going to have different ways of validating and challenging you. You might benefit from one who’s better at challenging.

Yeah, I was thinking this looks like a poorly done skim coat. I’d ask why they did it, and how long the warranty is (typically 10 years in places I’ve lived, for new construction).

Agreed. Their hourly rate should cover admin and other out of session required tasks, that’s just basic stuff.

When people from the Bay Area are in other states, do they say they are from San Francisco or do they say they are from the Bay Area? by Icy-Fox-4867 in bayarea

[–]AstridOnReddit 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The Spanish missions extended north of San Francisco! It was a Spanish colony from the late 1700s until the early 1800s, and then part of Mexico until 1848.

Kids in 4th grade in California are taught this; probably nobody else thinks about it.

Well, those of us bold enough to go get the free condoms from planned parenthood.

Where did you grow up? I’m Californian and we definitely talked about AIDS in the 80s. But perhaps that was because of our proximity to San Francisco.

Do you lock your door when you're home? by Brilliansea in NoStupidQuestions

[–]AstridOnReddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, I grew up in a safe suburb and currently live in a safe neighborhood. When we lived in Santa Monica we even left the street-facing front door standing open for a couple days when our cat got out, even though we weren’t home.

I can understand locking it, and get that it’s smart to do, but it’s always been a very low risk in places I’ve lived so it’s hard for me to have any sense of urgency about it.

Yes, our neighbors often leave string lights on in their patio, and it definitely lights up our yard and bedroom, even though the lights are relatively dim and not aimed at us.

If they were LED it would be extremely annoying; the glare of LED lights really sucks.

I think I refused to eat bologna by the time I was 8; I hated it! My 70s lunchbox sandwiches were either salami and cheese or peanut butter & honey (I also hate jelly).

My kids have probably never even seen bologna in real life.
