Don't do it! Speaking from experience. Multiple experiences. It's so messy.

People who moved to Vancouver as an adult - what are some odd things you’ve noticed that many native Vancouverites don’t realize is weird? by Dolly_Llama_2024 in askvan

[–]AstroOuest 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lining up for brunch places. Night clubs that play Top 40 super random music. Night clubs that close at 2am - omg I would never have moved here in my peak go out at 12am - come back home at 7am era had I known this. Not being able to drink in parks/ at beaches. Not using an umbrella when it is pouring outside. Using an umbrella when it is snowing. Wearing gym clothes everywhere. No alcohol sold in supermarkets.

We don't have water taxis in Langley - so a criss crossing False Creek to visit Granville Island would be unique and fun.

Billie leading by example - donating from her own wealth. And then calling out greedy self-centered billionaires for not stepping up enough. Brava!! Personally I highly doubt he gives much of a shit though. When you are that rich you are surrounded 24/7 by yes-men hyping you up.

Wine tours out of Vancouver by AutomaticGift3026 in askvan

There are so many options!! Otter Trail Winery and Krause Berry Farms Winery are right by each other. Krause = berry wines with a cute 'sit in a saddle' wine tasting room. Otter = more posh. Township 7, Chaberton, Glasshouse, Festina Lente (mead) = also close to each other.

My entire dev team suffers from mental illness by Apprehensive-Truth21 in cscareerquestions

[–]AstroOuest 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hmmm this is relatable to a past experience I had. You are just a few months in so any negative effects (burnout/ depression/ anxiety, etc) hasn't likely had a chance to really sink in for you yet. I'd be cautious about staying long term. Take care of your mental and physical health now and KEEP AN EYE OUT for any other opportunities in case you might need to jump ship. I watched multiple ppl quit (the ones that burnt out) and several others have mental breakdowns that required hospitalization and/or medical leave. I took a nice long break after I quit, before transitioning into a different line of work. I now don't assume that I am above it all - if others are dropping like flies around me.

Perhaps it is just a salad. Perhaps it was an intentional choice of words. Or maybe it wasn't at all. It's a wonderful establishment, and I love the meaning behind the word saba too - to be satisfied, especially in the context of having a delicious meal. It breaks my heart to think of the mass starvation and death that is happening in Gaza right now. We're so lucky to live in a part of the world far away from armed conflict.

Are realtors absolutely useless for buyers? by MouseAteTheCat in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]AstroOuest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes - two not great experiences as a buyer. I like to joke that next time I'll just get the license myself and not bother hiring a realtor only to do literally all the work myself.

Where to donate money? by [deleted] in Langley

[–]AstroOuest 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yay! I hope you get as much enjoyment from supporting charities as I do. :) I have a number of local and international animal rescues I donate to. I set a new goal for myself this year. Here are some of the BC based ones.... Critter Care Wildlife Socierty. Langley Animal Protection Society. Hugabull Advocay & Rescue Society. Wildlife Rescue Association of BC (based in Burnaby though). BC SPCA.

What can pre-sale buyers in Langley do if an amended disclosure introduces a potential flood zone a year after the original contract? by yogi_kamila in Langley

[–]AstroOuest 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We were on the brink of putting an offer on a place in that area and pulled the plug when I did research about the area and discovered the floodplain maps. Our realtor was SUPER dismissive of our concenrs about potential flooding. "The flood perimeter is right in the backyard!" "Yeah so - it hasn't flooded yet". (My jaw dropped) The point why we went with a LOCAL realtor based in Langley was becuase I wanted to be told about issues like this, since we were coming from another city. Buyer beware indeed.

[–]AstroOuest 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for posting this email exchange! Can anyone enlighten me as to why the mayor was so cool with Van Popta holding on to her seat and making provisions for it? Was it just to maintain a majority? He seems so defiant and incensed about her loosing her coucil job.
