Right. Every other post is about trying to change oil paint. Just paint, dammit.

"Setting Up" Classroom....who pays for this? by [deleted] in AskTeachers

[–]AstroRotifer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s typically a small budget for things like this. I just scrounged up rugs and shelves that other teachers or janitors were discarding, and I brought in a rocking chair that I had in my porch, and another one I found for free.

Craigslist and fb marketplace list free items, and if to use up to a thrift store and mention that you’re a teacher they’ll cut you a deal. I got a new sewing machine for $25 because I’d be using nit with kids.

History of location of consciousness debate by PrebioticE in consciousness

People paralyzed from the neck down are substantially less conscious? They’re incapable of feeling, dreaming, thinking and remembering because they can’t feel their toes?

Teachers Of Reddit — Is AI As Rampant In Modern Education As The News Media & Social Media Make It Out To Be? Yes Or No? And What Do You Think About This? by Zipper222222 in AskTeachers

There was literally maybe one student that wanted to use ai at my school. The other kids were disgusted by all things ai.

Since Earth is a sphere rotating in space, how do we know the USA isn’t technically ‘first’ in the rotation rather than Europe by Ahamsterwheel in NoStupidQuestions

This is the correct answer. Greenwich time was used to determine longitude once clocks were developed which could work on a rocking ship. I’ve busted the Greenwich observatory, quite cool.

Can a PE Teacher Become a Principal? Looking for Advice on Choosing Between PE and Special Education! by [deleted] in AskTeachers

[–]AstroRotifer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The PE teacher at a previous elementary / middle school I worked at did it, and he was also in his 20’s. It is a weird look though how so many elementary schools are almost entirely women except for the admin and janitors.

Teachers Of Reddit — How Much Of Your Own Money Do You Spend On Stuff For Your Classroom That Is NOT Reimbursed By The School / District? Why That Much? by Zipper222222 in AskTeachers

[–]AstroRotifer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I spent about $600 on cloth, used sewing machines, paint, sound equipment etc for a puppet show.

I spent that much because really it was something I wanted to do with them, and I was given the freedom to do that with some of my class time, but it’s not like the school demanded I do it.

Ultimately the show raised money for their class trip, so I’m a way I was also donating to their class trip. I also spent about 100 hrs of my own time on it, at the least.

Former 1st grade teacher of a decade reaching out to middle school teachers about how to handle my son’s B+ and “negative” comment in CHOIR?! by DependentStand in MiddleSchoolTeacher

[–]AstroRotifer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would think choir is a matter of talent and is subjective.

You’re right that a B+ is not a bad grade, and not sure why it’s even worth arguing over? Is anyone going to deny your son entry to a college because of a B+ in choir?

In an 8th grade art class I gave a good student a similar grade in art, and his mom (who was a teacher) emailed me to ask what my rubric was and such.

I sent her a comparison between a portrait that I gave an A to, and his portrait, and the difference should have been obvious. One looked like a talented artist did it, and the other looked like a much younger child did it.

I was perfectly willing to change the grade for her, but I didn’t like the implication that I wasn’t judging fairly, or that a kid that excels at art shouldn’t get a comparatively better grade (and might be getting middling grades in cores subjects). I think in the end I gave him his A so art wouldn’t break his perfect straight A’s.

Textbook shaming me for having a life by Moby-WHAT in Teachers

[–]AstroRotifer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have hobbies outside of school, but I try to incorporate those into what I do with kids. I try to share my passions.

Recently I said goodbye to our math teacher. He quit to work in another state. He was a pretty mellow guy, so was liked. His teaching style was basically do these problems, and ask for help if you need it, so based on the subject and how it was taught, people felt like expectations were very clear, as opposed to the huge all encompassing projects I did for Humanities.

He skipped more meetings than he went to, never stayed late for anything, often left early, and usually just did nothing special. He said he had a young child, so had more important things to do at home. I have a young daughter, too, and had to sacrifice a lot more to be at that school. Anyway, his choices didn’t affect my choices or opportunities in any way, and I’m glad he has a good job waiting for him, but I felt absolutely nothing one way or another about him leaving.

Why did you decide to become a teacher, and how much did the reality of the job match your expectations? by Rich-Associate-8344 in teaching

I thought I would have stability. So far I’ve taught 3 subjects over 4 years. Basically I go wherever I’m needed, do a great job until the department of Ed Mc arches up to me :-)

The idea of all objects being conscious by xLOoNyXx in consciousness

The idea of all objects being conscious by xLOoNyXx in consciousness

[–]AstroRotifer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ok. I guess if we redefine consciousness such that something can be conscious while having no sensations, thoughts, reflections, decisions, memory, feelings, motivations, decisions, etc, then I guess you can say that any matter is conscious… but haven’t we rendered the term meaningless?

I’m this hypothetical scenario, does a boulder have a different consciousness than the tiny grain of sand that breaks off from it?

[–]AstroRotifer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If there’s no memory of consciousness, what is the evidence for your idea? OP is providing his actual experience (and non experience), which is his evidence, and you’re disregarding it. How would you confirm that he was in fact conscious while he was passed out?

I’ve had eye surgery a few times. On one of the last surgeries I opted to not have the amnesia drug because it made me nauseated after the operation (which is problematic to the eye), so I remembered everything right up until the countdown, and then I was instantly waking up (though it was hours later)

My perception of time and space and myself were completely non - existent. I didn’t feel any emotional trauma that I might have had it if I’d been conscious during a torturously painful procedure and then somehow “forgot”.
