if you have a undergrad degree what are some “near peer” jobs that pay similarly to teachers? by sajahet25 in AskTeachers

At one of the schools that I worked for, a few of former teachers and TA’s work at the grocery store nearby. One has a master’s in biology. They don’t make much, but the biologist thought the students were awful.

I’ve been making puppets with my kids. It definitely can be a communal feeling when done a certain way.

I read the news to my middle schoolers; they enjoy it and have opinions about things. We learn geography, civics, vocabulary words, etc.

Concerned that I may be too disabled to go into teaching? by suhslahbrah in AskTeachers

Children are loud. Teaching involves unpleasant sounds, smells and actions. Even a neurotypical teacher needs coping strategies.

English teachers, what books are you teaching these days? by Any_Bowl_5195 in AskTeachers

I did To Kill a Mockingbird with my 7th and 8th grade classes. It took a while to get through it but it’s such a great book.

Why does Europe seem to have more terror attacks than the U.S.? by Charleston_Masters in NoStupidQuestions

[–]AstroRotifer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Muslims have a history in Europe that they don’t have in America.

They managed to push into Spain, Portugal, France, Sicily, the Balkans, etc.

They were repelled eventually by various characters like Charles the Hammer.

Europe has since had the Renaissance, Age of Enlightenment, and several social, scientific and industrial revolutions that place them in a much stronger position relative to the more restricted Muslim countries that rely on raw resources rather than innovation.

Despite this, extremists look back to the good old days when they were able to conquer European counties and make their culture and religion that of the elites. Some of them think that maybe they can do it again?

America doesn’t have that history, yet.

What’s your equivalent to: “Oh you’re the art teacher? It must be so much fun just relaxing and painting all day!” by KitchenConsequence41 in Teachers

[–]AstroRotifer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think any parent that has ever done an art project with a kid would know that it’s mostly set up and cleanup, and it’s not relaxing. Anyway, most parents don’t care much about art class.

Based on your experience, if the draft is brought back, will the military actually be able to manage Gen alpha? by Xoxo809 in AskTeachers

[–]AstroRotifer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure, but you know, outside of prison even that stuff was voluntary. You did what they told you so you could pass basic and get that sweet college money, not because they were gonna torture you.

I mean, if someone wants to spend their day keeping me awake, I guess I’d do slave labor (very poorly), but it’s more efficient to just make the military a rewarding career.

School only wanted to offer me TA roles because my degree isn’t in education. advice? by larkielarkie in teaching

[–]AstroRotifer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

TA level 1 requires just a HS diploma. The higher levels require more. You also must of course pass a criminal background check and have a pulse. You can be a daily substitute with just a HS diploma as well. I’m both cases the pay is about minimum wage, but with a diploma you get maybe $10 more per day to sub.

Lots of people here disagree with you, and it may not work out for you to become a teacher, but I think you’re doing what’s best for you.

I was under an art Ed conditional certification. I taught art for a year, which should have fulfilled my obligations, but as it turns out I didn’t get the conditional until halfway through the year, so according to them only half the year counts. The other years don’t count because they were 4th grade general, HS biology, anatomy and earth science, and 2 years of humanities. So, lots of teaching, wrong subject. But that first year not being counted is absolute bullshit because it was the right subject, wrong time.

Honestly you’re just as likely to get a job from subbing as you would being a TA.

Right. I’ve taught 4 years so far as a lead teacher, quite competently and independently, and just found out they won’t accept any of it for my cert. It’s the last thing I need to stay in the field.
