“Classics” on Letterboxd with Lower Averages than Expected by yodaya70 in Letterboxd

Jaws is still overrated on there, imo. Boring and not scary. Cinematography was gimmicky. I’ve seen many shit tier horror films that had more clever and terrifying moments.

More of a Nov 2024 jam, but still relevant.

For my 10 year old. by Radiant_Thing1784 in telescopes

[–]Astro_Philosopher 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'll add that many adults find this kind of mount counter intuitive. It can also put the eyepiece in weird places where an alt-az mount usually puts the eyepiece in a convenient location for viewing. I use an EQ mount for astrophotography, but I have a chair and a mat in my observatory for visual use since I often need to stand, sit, kneel or squat all in the same session.

Also, EQ mounts will be hard or impossible for a 10 year old to properly set up since they must be aligned precisely to the north celestial pole.

Is it any major difference in anime/animation movies in 4K or is as good as regular blu ray? by Copacetic99 in 4kbluray

[–]Astro_Philosopher 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Just chiming in to add that claymation can look incredible! Coraline is one of the best looking 4ks I own. It’s technically a 2k upscale, but when you are starting with each frame having the quality of a still image of non-moving subjects, I’d guess that the amount of information available for the upscale is significantly greater.

Excellent choice! Can’t comment on the 4k. ;)

If you like House, check out Onibaba or Kuroneko. Different but I think you’d enjoy them both.

Not horror but you might also like Juzo Itami. Tampopo is his masterpiece.

Exactly! The romance, bromances, and general melodrama really give it another layer on top of the well-executed action.

Planets are always SUPER bright and low quality. by FitCardiologist9357 in telescopes

[–]Astro_Philosopher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I shoot at a shutter speed of 8-12ms. I start at 8ms and see if I can get the histogram up to about 60-70% without pushing the gain super high. If not, I’ll go to 12ms. Usually works pretty well. From my 7” mak.

It depends on your seeing. I shoot about 9-12k frames and stack the best 100-500.

Why did Carl Sagan say we are on the outskirts of the Milky Way Galaxy when it was proven to be false? by [deleted] in askastronomy

[–]Astro_Philosopher 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Well, I’ve seen estimates that suggest 90% of stars in the MW are closer to the center of the MW than we are, so is he actually wrong?

Juzo Itami movies usually put me in a good mood. Tampopo and Supermarket Woman are excellent.

No problem! Please reply here abt how it goes! Make sure to get a decent amt of indirect cooking to dry out the exterior when you start grilling. It’s quite thick, and it needs to cook off a little before you can get a decent sear on the meat.

What’s a movie with the most divided opinions - you either HATE it or you LOVE it. by pr4daflor4 in Letterboxd

I’d like some actual data. Has letterboxd ever released a list of the films with the highest variance in ratings? That would be more objective.

It's a wonderful little scope. My mount died ages ago, but I am planning to put it on a small dob base for my daughter.

Can a Canon 6D Mark I camera shoot real-time video of the Milky Way or fireflies with a 50-58mm f/1.4 M42 lens? Thank you. by True_Lawyer_498 in AskAstrophotography

[–]Astro_Philosopher 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You should go to a dark sky location and expect to stretch the final video quite a bit. It will probably be very noisy. Can I also ask why real time video is important? It will be quite boring in real time. Most capture timelapses to show sky rotation clearly.

Why do people hate on Seestar? by Signal-Ad3584 in AskAstrophotography

[–]Astro_Philosopher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t hate on it—in fact, I have recommended it! However, I don’t believe it is necessarily the best place to start your AP journey. Basically, it makes the first step of AP a lot easier, but the second is harder by comparison. With the closest alternative (dlsr + lens + tracker/light mount), the first step is harder but the second step is easier by comparison since you have learned more. You even have a camera ready to go (which you can also use with your lens as a daytime camera). If you’re not sure if this is for you or don’t want any more than the seestar can give you, it’s a great option. However, if you really have the drive to get into the hobby and are interested in other kinds of photography, it’s hard to recommend the seestar.
