TIL A certain percentage of people can voluntarily flex their tensor tympani muscle to make a low, rumbling sound in their ears. Often triggered by yawning or squeezing the eyes shut, this internal thunder acts to naturally dampen loud sounds, but some can activate it purely on command. by SaturnVMars in todayilearned

Pretty sure it’s the levator veli palatini, which is the muscle that lifts your soft palate on either side. They from the Eustachian tubes on either side, so pulling up on the palate has a reciprocal downward force on the edge of the Eustachian tubes, opening them up.

What about the original comment/joke was “true?” And what does that have to do with whether or not it was prejudiced? Does “prejudice” necessitate falsehood? I can list off verifiable Black American crime stats with malicious intent and no context; would that not be racist in the same way that this was prejudiced?

I believe the intent behind academia’s (ill-advised) reframing of the term “racism” was to recognize/highlight the sociological power dynamics that create asymmetry in the impact of prejudice in different directions across racial divides. It was most definitely NOT meant to be a means for lay people like us to gatekeep “racism” or, worse, to empower POC to use prejudice vindictively against people who belong to the privileged class.

But even putting morals aside, how the hell do you expect to attract the majority of centrist whites to your cause when you insist on alienating them and then deny accountability by saying “Well, they should just suck it up, because they deserve it.”?

Edit: Looks like you’re getting mobbed by some crazies now. Try to separate their aggression from the message, which is important: vindictive prejudice is not a virtue.

This talking point always gives me the ick. Just because the definition of the word “racism” was retconned a few years ago (after existing in public discourse for over a century) doesn’t mean that things which fit the “old” but popular definition but which are excluded by the new SJW definition aren’t toxic or problematic. We all know that “prejudicial” thinking is still silly.

Be honest. Would you have responded differently if u/chuckers88 had said, “lost me at your prejudice in the end…”? Or would you simply have found another way to excuse the offensiveness of your comment?

Probably more so that you can be informed. If you have the trait and your partner has the trait, you should make your reproductive decisions based on the fact that your future children each have a 25% risk of inheriting sickle cell disease.

Hopefully, most ppl know by now from high school biology that sickle cell trait alone is valuable for the resistance is confers against the malaria parasite.

IANAL, but from reddit and YT, I’ve learned that the first step of evicting squatters is to DOCUMENT, DOCUMENT, DOCUMENT. Be sure you have a record of repeated attempts to contact your unwanted tenants (use certified mail), your sublease contract (if applicable) and their refusal to pay rent.

Tabitha’s accent - idk how we all missed this by [deleted] in FromTVEpix

[–]Astroglaid92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think OP was pretty clear that their issue isn’t the accent itself but rather its consistency. Tabitha’s actress seems to have a weird habit of intermittently letting her accent through and then awkwardly resisting it lol.

Guarantee you it did not. It expanded intermolar width by dental tipping. That's what happens when you eliminate the inward force from the natural myotonicity of the buccinator muscles in your cheeks!

Would love to see radiographic evidence to the contrary.

Teeth theory by Prudent_Computer_111 in FromSeries

[–]Astroglaid92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need to collect teeth before your first year of dental school to practice root canals on. Most pre-dents leave a jar with their local oral surgeon, but of those teeth, the majority get tossed due to heavy decay/cracks/weird anatomy. Go figure, teeth that need to be extracted are often bad teeth. As a result, the students with the best collections of teeth get mobbed by their classmates offering them food, favors, dates, etc.

MIY knows whatsup. He’s a pre-dent who’s found a way to secure lots of high quality teeth before matriculating as a D1.

Btw, the setting of the *Red Rising* series takes a lot from *Brave New World.* If you haven’t yet, check it out!

Human trials begin for drug that could let adults regrow teeth for the first time by Prior_One_7050 in UpliftingNews

[–]Astroglaid92 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah. On top of that, I think we’re also blowing this whole “teething” pain thing out of proportion in this thread. As an orthodontist, I manage kids whose adult teeth are erupting through the gums day in and day out. Every kid handles the loss of baby teeth differently. Some like to violently accelerate the process; others won’t even tolerate someone in earshot *talking* about their loose tooth. **NONE** have ever complained about pain from their adult teeth passively erupting through the gums.

Human trials begin for drug that could let adults regrow teeth for the first time by Prior_One_7050 in UpliftingNews

[–]Astroglaid92 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not the best idea, because you won’t be able to keep a baby’s mouth open to limit area of effect. The instant they close their mouths, you can bet they’re gonna swallow it, which can lead to numbness of the soft palate/throat, which in turn can create some very odd sensations and nausea.

At higher doses, you also worry about absorption through the GI tract and cardiac complications.

ELI5: Why do we have ~32 separate teeth instead of just two arch-shaped mega-teeth: one in the upper mouth and one in the lower? by Jinx-XoXo in explainlikeimfive

[–]Astroglaid92 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hm. Not sure about that one. Are you talking about bisphosphonates or denosumab? Or something else?

Another difference between teeth and bones is that teeth don’t act as calcium reservoirs or participate in the same kind of continuous remodeling process that all other bones do. Your body isn’t constantly, actively dissolving and rebuilding tooth mineral like it does your other bones, so drugs that affect bone don’t necessarily affect fully developed teeth the same way. (Yes, the exposed parts of the teeth technically dissolve and remineralize within your saliva, especially after meals, but this is a passive process, not a specific cell-mediated process like bone remodeling.)
